1. Safety InstructionsUse a proper power source.Do not use this product with a power source that supplies voltage outside of the specified range (100-240V AC).

Never insert metallic objects into the DVR.Inserting metal objects into the DVR may cause severe electrical shock.

Do not operate in wet or dusty environments.Avoid operation in damp or dusty areas, such as damp basements.

Do not expose to water.If the product gets wet, unplug it immediately and contact an authorized dealer.

Keep product surfaces clean and dry.To clean the DVR casing, use a slightly moistened cloth and wipe it gently.

Provide proper ventilation.Do not block the air vents (located on the bottom, top, sides and back) of the DVR to prevent the system from overheating.

Do not attempt to remove the casing.You may be subjected to severe electrical shock if you remove the casing of the DVR. If the DVR emits any unusual smells or sounds, unplug it immediately and contact Customer Service.

Handle DVR box with care.Dropping and shaking the DVR could cause irreparable damage. If the DVR does not work properly due to physical damage, please contact Customer Services for repair or exchange.

Use standard lithium cell battery (NOTE: Manufacturer has preinstalled a battery).The standard lit hium cell 3V battery located in the motherboard should be replaced if the system clock does not update the time while the DVR is turned off. Warning: Always unplug the DVR before operating inside of it or you may be subjected to severe electrical shock. Properly dispose of batteries.

3. DVR Installation3.1. HDD Installation

Step-By-Step:

Step 1: Unscrew the DVR chassis. Carefully slide it back and remove.

Step 2: Retrieve the data cable (red cable) and power cable (red, yellow, black) included in the resealable bag. Connect one end to the DVR board as shown, making sure that the “L” shape matches up.

Step 3: Connect the data cable and power cable to the hard drive, once again making sure that the “L” shape matches up.

Step 4: Place the hard drive in the corresponding space. While pressing the hard drive against the case, flip the DVR upside down.


Step 5: Move the hard drive so that the screw holes align. Holding the hard drive in place, fasten the screws.

Step 6: Align the slots on the chassis with the tabs on the front panel of the DVR.


Step 7: While holding the chassis at an angle, press it back onto the DVR. You may need to exert force, and you will hear a snapping sound. Fasten the screws.

3.2. Camera Connection

What you will need:

•DVR •Camera•Video (BNC male-to-female) and power extension cable•12V Power Adapter

Important! Do not use any other power sources other than a 12V source.Your camera has a built-in cord that splits into one (1) BNC video connector and one (1) RCA 12V DC power connector.

Step 1: Connect the BNC connector on the camera to the male-end of the BNC extension cable, which will lock into place.

Step 2: Attach the other end of the BNC extension cable (male-end) to any of the video input slots located on the back panel of the DVR.

Step 3: Connect the power cord on the camera to the male-end of the power extension cable.

Step 4: Connect the end of the power extension cable to the 12V power adapter.

3.2.1. Connecting PTZ

Step 1: Determine which wire is positive and which is negative (color-correspondence may vary for each model).

Step 2: Use an 18 gauge power wire to extend the positive and negative wires.

Step 2: Connect the wire to the back panel of the DVR (object H on Figure 2.3.) by pushing the orange tabs in, and inserting the wires into the green slots. Make sure that the positive wire goes into the positive terminal (A), and the negative wire goes into the negative terminal (B). Refer to the figure below:

3.3. Alarm Connection

You are able to connect up to four input alarms (numbered 1-4 on the back panel, refer to Figure 2.3.). For assistance regarding advanced alarm setup, please refer to a separate manual. This can be found online at http://www.zmodo.net/faq/.

3.4. USB Connection

Your DVR will feature two USB ports on the back panel. Connect a USB mouse to the corresponding port, and connect back-up storage devices to the other port. Note: The back-up storage must be formatted in the FAT32 file system in order for the DVR to recognize it. Formatting the hard drive can be done on your computer.Refer to objects F and G in Figure 2.3.

Warning: Connecting USB components into the wrong ports may affect performance and/or permanently damage saved files.

3.5. Network Connection

See Section 12.1.1.

3.6. Connecting a display

The DVR system supports two output types, VGA and BNC. In order to connect an output, you will need a display that supports either VGA or BNC, or you will need a VGA/BNC converter to convert the output to a signal that your display can support.

To connect a display,

BNC: Connect a BNC female-to-female cable to the “Main Out” (object C, refer to Figure 2.3.). Connect the other end to the BNC input on your display.

VGA: Connect a VGA cable to the VGA output on the back panel (object D, refer to Figure 2.3.). Connect the other end to the VGA input on your display.

NOTE: If you have both BNC and VGA connected to the DVR, you will need to press and hold the SEARCH button in order to switch between display methods. The DVR cannot simultaneously display both VGA and BNC. If you have both connected, the DVR is defaulted to display VGA.

4. Unit Startup and Shutdown4.1. Powering on

Make sure that the power is properly connected (object F in Figure 2.3.) to a suitable power source (within the range of 100-240V AC).

Power on the system by flipping the power switch so that the side with the line is down. The power indicator LED will turn on, and you will hear one short tone and then a pause, followed by three longer tones.

4.2. Shutting Down

4.2.1. Safe shut down

Step 1: Access the [Main Menu] either by right clicking on the main screen, or by pressing the menu on the DVR front panel or the remote.

Step 2: Select the [Exit] option.

Step 3: You will be presented with a drop-down menu. Select “SHUTDOWN SYSTEM” and select confirm.

Step 4: After the monitor no longer has a display, flip the power switch so that the side with the line is protruding.

4.2.2. Forced shut down (avoid if possible)

Warning! Shutting down the DVR in this manner may result in data loss, or irreparable damage to the system.

Method 1: Flip the power switch so that the side with the line is protruding.

Method 2: Pull out the power plug.

5. System Intialization5.1. Formatting the HDD

Step 1: When turning the system for the first time, you will be prompted with a message:

Select yes, since you will need to format your hard drive in order to record videos.

NOTE! If you do not see the above message after start-up, refer to Section 9.1. and check if the hard drive is already formatted. If it isn’t, then you will need to manually format it (refer to Section 9.1).

Step 2: After selecting yes, a message will appear:

After a few minutes, it will return to the main interface (quad-view camera feed by default) and the hard drive will be formatted.

5.2. Main Interface

Immediately upon formatting the HDD, the DVR will display the main interface:

Changing the view-mode: Double-clicking anywhere in each channel will blow-up the corresponding camera-feed to full screen. In addition, pressing the view-mode button on the front panel or remote will blow up the selected feed to full screen (the selected screen is outlined in green, screen-selection can be done using the navigation buttons). Repeating both actions will change the view-mode back to quad-screen.

5.3. System Setup

5.3.1. Firmware Update

WARNING! Please read the company software policies before updating. We are not responsible for any system damage that may result from this process.

First enter the [Main Menu] and navigate to [System Info] -> [Version Info] and check the firmware version, shown in red. If you need any assistance with menu navigation and/or user log-in, refer to Chapter 6.

Updating the Firmware

If your firmware version is not up-to-date, open the main menu and navigate to [Advance] -> [Soft Upgrade].

Step 1: Select the external storage device containing the desired firmware, and press “Upgrade”.

Step 2: You will be prompted with a confirmation message, select “Yes” and the update will start automatically. Do NOT turn off the system or unplug the power

source during update.


WARNING! It is crucial that you install the most updated firmware for your specific system. Not doing so may result in permanent system failure. If you are unsure, please consult customer services before updating.

5.3.2. System Date and Time

It is very important to properly update the system date and time prior to recording, since file search on the DVR requires that you specify the date of recording. In order to update the system clock, open the [Main Menu] and go to [System Setup] ->

This DVR system features two main types of menu, the quick launch menu and the full main menu:

6.1. User Log-in

Before any permissions other than surveillance and alarm editing are granted, the user must log in. By default, the system has three users which cannot be edited or deleted.

Admin: Has the highest authorization and can carry out all operations.

Default Password: 666666User: Control over everything with the exception of firmware update and system restore. Default Password: 123456Default: Control over surveillance and alarm editing.Default Password: None, user is given these permissions by default unless logged into a different account.

6.1.1. Logging in

In order to open the following log-in prompt, attempt to access any permission that is not currently granted to you (e.g. open the main menu):

Press on the drop-down arrow with the mouse, or select the box with the navigational pad to select the user:


After selecting the user, navigate to the password box and click or press the function key to open a soft keyboard:

After typing in your password using the navigational pad or the mouse, select confirm and you will be directed to the function that you originally chose.

6.1.2. Creating/Deleting Users

You can add or delete users and change user passwords and permissions in the User Management screen. To do this, access the [Main Menu] and navigate to [Advance] -> [User Account].

6.1.3. Logging out

In order to log out of your current user session, open the [Main Menu] and select[Exit]:

Select “Confirm” and you will be redirected back to the main interface as the default user.

6.2. Quick Launch Menu

The quick launch menu can be accessed by right-clicking anywhere on the main interface, or by pressing the function keys on either the front panel or the remote.

6.3. Main Menu

Access the main menu by pressing the “Menu” button on the remote or front panel, or by selecting it in the quick launch menu:

Main Menu Sub-Menus Purpose

Search for and playback files on the DVR. Fast playback, slow playback, or normal playback speeds are available.

HDD Info Displays HDD information such as remaining memory.

Log InfoDisplays DVR events and the corresponding date and time. Includes user log-in/out, system settings changes, recordings, etc.

Version Info Displays information regarding system software, hardware, and date of issue.

Net User Displays network user information, including the IP and log-in account.

System Change system date/time, date/time display format, system language, local DVR ID, and video system.

Encoding Edit file encoding formats for each channel of recording.

Recording Schedule the time-period and method for automatic recording.

PTZ Edit the PTZ parameters for each input channel.

Network Edit network settings.

Alarm Edit alarm sensor type, recording channel, output and other parameters.

Detection Change motion detection settings and coverage, as well as video loss detection.

DisplayChange display sett ings and set up display sequencing (timed slideshow of displays). Settings will be applied after returning to the main interface.

Opens the quick recording control menu: select whether to start recording automatically for each channel (as dictated in system setup), or manually start and stop the recording.

HDD selection and formatting.

Opens the alarm menu to configure alarm trigger method.

User Account Manage user accounts. Add/delete users, edit user permissions and change user passwords.

Exception Create notifications (high-pitch beep) for system events such as video loss, no memory, etc.

System Upgrade

Upgrade the system firmware. Warning! It is critical that the firmware is correct.

VGA Adjust Change output settings including display settings and output volume.

RestoreRestore selected system sett ings to factory defaults—user accounts and system language cannot be restored.

Select files on DVR HDD to be copied onto the USB back-up storage (port located on the back panel).

7. Recording Setup

Figure 7.1.

To edit values, use select button to access each element and the function key to use the soft keyboard.

[Disk Full] Edits system response to a full hard drive. Either overwrite the oldest files or stop the current recording period.

[Duration] Set the duration of each recorded file during the period of continuous recording. (In Figure 7.1, channel 1 would record 24 files, each file 60 min in length).

[Channel]

Select the channel recording settings to edit. Warning: Save the current settings before editing another channel.

[Schedule]

Edit recording settings for each day of the week.

Continuous Recording Period May specify up to four different recording periods for each channel. Each period will have different activation methods for recording.

Recording ActivationEdit the recording activation methods. Normal activates recording at the specified time, Motion activates recording when motion is detected in the channel, and Alarm activates recording when the channel’s alarm is triggered.

Copy Settings Copy the current settings to other channels. Warning: You still have to save the settings for each channel, otherwise settings will not be saved.

8. Playback/File Backup8.1. Playback

In order to access the playback screen, access it from the menus or press the play/pause button on the front panel or remote:

Recording Search:

[Search Date]Input the date that the desired file was recorded.

[Start Time]

[End Time]

Indicate the time period in which the recording occurred.

Note: End time must be larger than the start time.

[Play Type] File Select: Select a specific file to play (located on the right).Time Limit: Play all files that were recording at or during the specified [Start Time] and ending at the specified [End Time].

[Search Type]Filter files based on the recording-activation type (normal refers to scheduled or manual recording, alarm refers to alarm triggered recording, and motion refers to motion sensor triggered recording).

8.2. File Backup

Access the File Backup by opening the [Main Menu] and selecting [File Backup]

Step 1: Connect a backup storage device to the USB port on the backside of the DVR.

Step 2: Press “Detect”. Then select the desired backup device on the left.

Step 3: Press “Add”. A file search window will be prompted. After inputting the search parameters and selecting the desired files, hit “Append” and the files will be added to the backup list.

Step 4: After appending all of the desired files, hit “Exit” and you will be returned to the main file backup screen. You will see your files appended to the list (highlighted in red). To remove files from the list, select a file and press “CLR SEL”. To remove all files, press “CLR ALL”.

Step 5: Once you have your desired list, press “BACKUP” and the system will begin writing the files to your drive. The progress indicator is shown in red.

Step 5.1: If for any reason you need to terminate the backup process, press “STOP” and you will see the following message. Select yes.

In order to manually format the hard drive, access the [Main Menu] and navigate to [Hard Disk].

The HDD Status Indicator conveys the status of each hard drive—the green check mark denotes that the hard drive is ready, the red x means that the hard drive is not connected, a yellow exclamation mark means that the hard drive is unformatted.

Select the hard drive under [Hard Disk], and then select “Format” under [Operation]. Once the correct device is selected, press [Go] and the HDD will be formatted.

In order to make the PTZ camera compatible with the DVR, you must make sure that the following settings match the properties of the PTZ camera (which can be set from the dipswitch).

Channel: Specifies the input channel that the PTZ camera is connected to.

Dev Address: Specifies the camera’s device address. This is necessary because all PTZ cameras are connected to the same control terminals. Each camera has a unique device address so that the system can distinguish which device to send the data out to.

Protocol: This is the control “language” between the DVR and camera. It is necessary that the protocol on the camera matches the protocol in this setting, otherwise the camera will not be able to interpret the data sent from the DVR.

Baud Rate: Synonymous to the number of symbols (or signaling events) sent per second. PTZ cameras generally don’t send that much information, thus this setting is typically arbitrary.

Use PTZ Mode button (item 12 on Figure 2.6.) to switch between Iris, Focus, Zoom and Speed. Use the Volume control buttons (item 5 on Figure 2.6.) to adjust the values.IRIS: Adjusts the amount of light let in through lens.FOCUS: Adjusts camera focus.ZOOM: Zooms camera in and out.

Advanced PT Scanning Modes and configuration of scanning parameters (left/right boundaries, predefined locations).

5 P r e s e t Locations

You may define up to 35 (0-34) locations that the DVR remembers to point the camera at. In order to do program this, use the PT controls of the camera so that the desired object is being viewed by the camera. Input a number between 0-34 (inclusive) and press "Setup". That specific location is now assigned that value, and every time you input that value in the box and press "Call" the camera will automatically point to that location again. Test this after setting up a location pointer by moving to a different area, and calling the location again.

11. Video DetectionAccess the Video Detection Setup by opening the [Main Menu] and navigating to

[System Setup] -> [Detection].

[Alarm Type] Select the detection type that you want to apply (motion detection or video loss detection).

[Region] Setup the region of detection for motion detection (not applicable to video loss detection).

[Alarm Reset After] Set the delay time until the alarm is ready to be triggered again.

[Recording Channel] Recording will automatically begin after motion detection is triggered (not applicable to video loss). System must be set in Auto-recording mode and the motion detection must be set for the specified time (see 7. Recording Setup)

[Alarm Dev Out] DVR Alarm will be sound if this option is selected.

[Sensitivity] Edit motion detection sensitivity (Lowest corresponds to least sensitive, Highest corresponds to most sensitive)

[Schedule] Schedule up to two continuous periods in which the detection will trigger a specific output.

Continuous Time Periods Edit the time period and corresponding output method.

Dev Output: An external alarm (must first connect one) will sound once the event is detected.

OSD Output: An icon will appear on the main interface when an event is detected.

[Copy Setting] Copy the current settings to any channel (must first navigate to that channel's settings and save it in order to apply the changes).

11.1. Motion Detection Region Setup

Press “Setup” after Region to edit the area of motion detection. The green-filled blocks are areas of motion detection, the blocks showing the camera’s display do not have motion detection.

Adding area of detection:

In order to add an area of motion detection, left-click on any green block. To add multiple blocks, hold the left mouse button and drag from left to right.

Removing area of detection:

Right-click on any block to remove area of detection. Hold the right mouse button and drag from left to right in order to remove multiple blocks.

11.2. Video Loss

Video Loss simply alerts you if you have lost one of the camera inputs, whether the camera BNC is disconnected or the camera loses power. Once video is lost, the corresponding alarm settings will trigger.

12. Network Setup12.1. Local Network Setup

Connecting the DVR to your local network allows you to access and control the DVR from any computer in the building, without being physically connected to it.

12.1.1. Connecting the DVR to the network

Step 1: Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the LAN port on the back panel of the DVR (see object E in Figure 2.3.) and connect the other end to the network router.

Step 2: Make sure that the DVR is connected to the same internet connection as the computer that you will be accessing the DVR through.

Step 3: Once connected, the Network Indicator on the Status Bar of the DVR should be lit.

TroubleshootingThe indicator is not lit, what should I do? First check to see that the Ethernet connections are secure—when you plug the cable into the port, you should hear a “click”. If you find that the connections are secure, then try restarting the DVR and the router, or switching Ethernet cables. If the problem persists, please call customer services at

Ethernet IP: This is the local IP address of the DVR. Modify according to the

address rules of the DHCP server (typically the router). Check the router for the address range.

Netmask: This value rarely needs to be changed, however it must be identical to the address of the network.

Gateway: The gateway is the IP address of the router to which the DVR is connected.

MAC: An identifier assigned to the network adapter. Will not need to be changed.

Email: Setup an email address to receive notifications from the DVR.

DNS: The Domain Name Server (DNS) should also be set to the local address of the router.

Server Port: The virtual port number on your server, in most cases this will not be changed.

HTTP Port: The purpose of this port is to allow access to the DVR via Internet Explorer. The default value is 80, which is http port standard. This value shouldn’t need to be changed, unless the ISP blocks port 80.

Mobile Port: Specify the virtual port for mobile device compatibility. DDNS Server, Domain Name, Account, Password: Unless specifically paying for a static public IP address, most internet customers have a dynamic IP (“leased”) IP address. Turning DDNS on allows you to identify the specific device regardless of IP, by assigning it a static host name.

PPoE Auto Link, PPoE IP, Dial Up, Account, Password: PPoE is used for certain DSL internet providers. If you select this, you will be required to input the corresponding information (IP, Account and Password) in order to connect to the internet. Contact your ISP for more information.

12.1.3. Local Network Setup

Step 1. Open the command prompt on your computer.

On Windows 7/Vista

On the Start Menu search box, type in “CMD”:

In the dialogue box that is prompted, type in “CMD” and press enter.


Step 2. Determine your IP address

Once the command prompt opens, you should see a directory (C:\) and a blinking cursor. Type “ipconfig” and press enter.

Write down the settings somewhere:IP Address: This is the number that represents which computer you are on. The number will vary for each computer. Do NOT use the same IP when configuring ETHERNET IP in network settings of the DVR.Subnet Mask: You will not need to worry about this number, just make sure that it matches in the network settings of the DVR.Default Gateway: This number represents your router, which connects to your service provider’s modem, which connects you to the Internet.

Step 3. Access the network settings on the DVR

Open the [Main Menu] -> [System Setup] -> [Network]

In [Ethernet IP], change the fourth section (.100 in this case) to something different from your computer’s IP. Netmask should be the same as the Subnet Mask number from your command prompt, and DNS and Gateway should be the same as the Default Gateway address.

Press “Save” and exit out of the network screen.

Step 4. Check that your DVR is communicating with the router.

Repeat Step 1 and type “Ping 192.168.1.100” in the command prompt. NOTE: The IP address may vary, type whichever IP address you put in the ETHERNET IP box of the DVR settings. You should see something like the following:

Step 4: Enter the username and password of any user account on your DVR except for the default user. (E.g., under username enter “Admin” and under password enter “666666”).

Step 5: Enter the Mobile Port value (e.g. 8888).

Step 6: Click Play, Start, or Log In button depending on your device.

13. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if the DVR does not detect the hard drive?

A: Hard Drive loss occurs when the hard drive is taken offline, either by drive failure or disconnection from the DVR. Refer to Section 9.1 for instructions on how to ensure the hard drive is properly installed.

If the hard drive continues to appear to be malfunctioning, please contact technical support.

Q: The DVR is requesting a password. What if I don’t remember the password?

A: In most cases, technical support can assist in unlocking a DVR. The owner must contact us and provide the invoice or order number corresponding to the DVR.

Q: Why isn’t the camera feed showing on my screen?

A: Make sure that the cameras are connected properly to the DVR and a suitable power source. Refer to section 3.2. Camera Connection for assistance. Open the Main Menu and navigate to [System Setup] -> [System] and set “Video System” to NTSC. If the problem persists, try switching for new cables.

Q: Can the DVR overheat?

A: The DVR may overheat during continuous operation. Try to place the DVR in a cool, ventilated area away from direct sunlight.

If you notice a decline in performance that may be attributed to overheating, unplug the DVR and contact customer services.

Q: Why isn’t the remote working?

A: Make sure nothing is blocking the infrared sensors on the front panel of the DVR, or replace the batteries.

Q: Can I use my own hard drive in the DVR?

A: If the hard drive is SATA and no larger than 1TB, then you can install your own hard drive in the DVR. Please note that our hard drives are especially designed for the rough wear of DVR recording, so standard hard drives may have a shorter life. In addition, a DVR-formatted hard drive cannot be read in a PC without special Linux software.

Q:DoIhavetostoprecordinginordertoplaybackfiles?

A: No. The DVR supports simultaneous recording and playback.

Q:CanIeraseacertainrecordingfile?

A: The only two methods for erasing files are overwriting the oldest file, with the overwrite function enabled, or formatting the hard drive, which will erase everything.

Q: Why can’t I view my DVR online?

A: Check that your network settings are configured correctly (refer to section 12. Network Setup), or check that the DVR or local network is online.

Q: Why can’t I control my PTZ camera?

A: Ensure the PTZ cameras are connected properly to the DVR. Refer to section 3.2.1. Connecting PTZ.

If they are connected properly, make sure that they are configured correctly. To do so, refer to either the online PTZ setup instructions or the camera’s manual.

Q: Why does the buzzer keep sounding?

A: An alert has been triggered. Motion may have been detected, the hard drive may be low on space or disconnected, or a camera may have lost video. Check your alarm settings.
