Dene Valley U3AOn 10th December David Templeman’s Talk is “Lady Arbella Stuart - The Queen That Never Was”, a talk on the granddaughter of Bess of Hardwick, who was born to be a Queen. Niece to Mary, Queen of Scots, she was brought up with the sole intention of being crowned Queen after Elizabeth. This is a compelling tale of exploitation, politics and religion. We follow Arbella from her confined childhood to a dramatic finale in one of the most exciting romantic escape stories in history: follow it to its dramatic conclusion as the twists and turns of Arbella’s escape to France is edge of the seat stuff. This riveting tale has everything!!

Our new year’s programme begins on January 14th with an Introduction to South Africa – its landscapes, flora and Wildlife, brought to us by Adrian James.

Wellesbourne Community Cinema There is no film in December as it would be too near ‘the big day’ but January’s film will be on January 27th in the Church Centre…All are welcome to our Community Cinema. Doors open at 4pm; £4 a seat, including a free cup of tea/coffee.

Our Groups

Books on Monday Books on Monday reviewed Ruth Hogan's first novel The Keeper of Lost Things, a delight to read, a warm and uplifting experience. Hogan captures perfectly and heart-rendingly the small items and

moments on which a life can turn. She reveals how even discarded items have significance, and random objects, people and places are all interconnected.

- Penny Holbrook 01789 470697 [email protected]

- Theresa Finkel 01789 842637 [email protected] PlusWe had a good discussion in November led by Jim with some articles from Computer Active. Perhaps we should do this again next year.

There will be no December meeting so we shall meet again on January 14th when we will be looking at and discussing the use of such sites as WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, facebook etc.

We also started discussing the future of the group as Roger and I would like a break and although numbers were good this month, they have been rather small recently. We have sufficient funds to run until about June next year when we normally start our summer break and then we will have to decide whether to proceed after that.

Flower ArrangingAfter visiting Country Baskets, a floral wholesalers, in Lye in October we were back in St.

Peter's Church Rooms in November to create our flower arrangements. We welcomed a new member and look forward to welcoming another in

December, but there is always room and a welcome for more so if you are interested please get in touch. The only requirement is a love of flowers! There were many ideas for inspiration ranging from Autumn designs to preparing for Christmas. There were wonderful arrangements in-cluding a hollowed out pumpkin, two Christmas wreaths, which will keep until they are needed by placing on grass, and autumnal and wintery designs.

Looking forward to December we are taking our inspiration from this winter's Flower Arranger magazine. On the front cover is an arrangement based on a star which we will need to construct.

Inside the magazine there are ideas for wreaths and a floral 'snow dome', so plenty to keep us busy. We are postponing our Christmas lunch until January but in December we will be swapping our Secret Santa present which at a

maximum cost of £2 will challenge and require some creativity. - Jenny Down 01789 841567 [email protected]

History - FamilyAt our November meeting we had an entertaining talk from Carol about Celebration Cakes and some examples from her family history. Then we had samples of a Courting Cake made by Carol; very tasty!

For our December meeting, on the 13th, we will be playing some old parlour games together with mince pies. We will also need to start planning our 2020 program so if you have any ideas for topics or are will to talk yourself, please let me know.

Luncheon ClubOur November outing to The Leopard in Bishops Tachbrook was severely disrupted by the weather, as several access roads were closed by flooding and some people were unable to get through. However, those of us who made it were glad of a hot meal and an opportunity to discuss alternative routes home! Our Christmas Party meal will be at The Fuzzy Duck, the popular pub in Armscote, but as numbers were restricted we are already fully booked. For those who are coming, copies of the Christmas Party menu for pre-ordering will be made available shortly. Please note the later dining time and allow extra time for parking as space is restricted. See you there – whatever the weather!

Rock & Roll and MoreOur next Meeting is on Monday, 9th December. The venue is the YHA and we start at 2.30pm. We are into 70’s music for this session but there will also be seasonal appeal!

Come and join us and go home with a “feel good feeling” after a session of popular music.

- Tony Whiteley 01789 471036 [email protected] Planes & AutomobilesFor our October outing we joined with the Art Appreciation group on a visit to London. While the art group went to the National Portrait gallery, we went off to the Royal Mail museum. The actual museum is housed in a small

building opposite the main London sorting office known as Mount Pleasant. This is very interesting place with exhibits going back to the start of the Royal Mail in the 17th century. Beginning with the horse drawn carriages through to the present day, exhibits show the various uniforms that were worn. A large display tells the story of the great train robbery in 1963. For the tour of the

underground in a train we went across the road to the main sorting office where the railway runs 70 feet below ground. The building of the system was first started in 1915 and completed in 1927. It ran for 6½ miles from Paddington in the west to Whitechapel in the east it was quite a complex

system of small tunnels where the trains ran on 2ft gauge tracks, with no drivers required. It was designed purely to carry sacks of mail which could be taken in a matter of minutes from one sorting office to another, thus avoiding the

congested streets above (some things don't change). The system was closed in 2003 due to the drop in the volume of mail being posted, caused by the rise in electronic mail. The railway opened as a tourist attraction in 2017 using the old rolling stock modified to carry passengers.

The circular trip takes 20 minutes going through some of the old station and gives a flavour of what it a like in it prime. After the tour we strolled down to Covent Garden for some free time before we journeyed home.
