READING – from Our America: Highlighting Important Terms PASSAGE- highlight important/significant cities NOTICE & NOTE

NORTHEAST CITTESNew York City is home to the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, and United Nations; as well as the site of the dreadful attack on the World Trade Center – September 11, 2001 known simply as 9/11. Boston, Massachusetts is a major shipping port, home to the world’s finest universities and centers for medicine, research, and technology. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are both located in Pennsylvania. Settled by Quakers, Philadelphia is sometimes referred to as the “city of brotherly love.” Pittsburgh is called the “City of Bridges” and “The Steel City” because of its hundreds of bridges and former steel mills.

SOUTHEAST CITIESSoutheast cities include Atlanta, Georgia; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Washington, DC. Atlanta is a top business city and air transportation hub; also the home of Coca-Cola. New Orleans is a major port city that straddles the Mississippi River. Known for great food, good architecture and music – the birthplace of jazz and home to Mardi Gras – the wild spring carnival. Washington, DC is our nations’ capital. Important federal agencies, such as the FBI, CIA, and the Department of Homeland Security are located there.

MIDWEST CITIESPost-Civil War, the Midwest became a hub for manufacturing – birthplace of modern auto industry in Detroit, Michigan, meat packing in Chicago, Illinois, and St. Louis, Missouri, “The Gateway to the West”. Chicago is a major transportation hub linking east to west. Detroit - called the “Motor City” due to the auto industry originally being based there is also home to the Motown-sound – a legendary style of music St. Louis is home to the Gateway Arch located where the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers meet.

SOUTHWEST CITIESThe two important Southwest Region cities are San Antonio, Texas and Santa Fe, New Mexico. San Antonio – home of the Alamo – is the place where Texas fought for independence from Mexico. Santa Fe, founded in 1608, served as a trade center between the US and Mexico and in the 19th century (1800s) the Santa Fe Trail linked the Midwest with the West.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CITIESDenver, Colorado - the “Mile High City” a famous tourist destination for skiing, and Salt Lake City, Utah, founded by the Mormons in 1847, are two of the Rocky Mountain cities which helped to develop America. Denver was founded after the discovery of gold in 1858. Salt Lake City was also the site of hundreds of copper, silver, gold, and lead minds dug in the area between 1860 and the 1920s.

PACIFIC CITIESLos Angeles is the second largest US city, home to Hollywood’s film and TV industry, and the world’s entertainment capital. San Francisco was transformed from a village to a city in 1849 by the gold rush and was almost destroyed by an earthquake in 1906.Today the “Silicon Valley” just south of San Francisco is an important technology center. Seattle, Washington is a cultural center and home to Starbucks Coffee. Originally a great timber/lumber area and shipping center, it is now an aircraft manufacturing region.

NONCONTIGUOUS REGION CITIESThe chilly city of Juneau, Alaska and the warm city of Honolulu, Hawaii: Juneau, capital of Alaska, founded in 1880 due to the gold rush is only accessible by boat or air. Honolulu, Hawaii, capital of Hawaii, is an important tourist destination. The American naval base of Pearl Harbor is nearby and was the site of the 1941 bombing by Japan that led to the US entering WWII.
