Dissertation: The Effects of Three Bibliotherapy Techniques on Fourth Graders’ Self-esteem, Reading Achievement, and Attitudes towards Reading. This study examined the effects of four reading instructional approaches: bibliotherapy/reading-aloud, in which the teacher reads aloud to the class, bibliotherapy/silent-reading, in which the students read to themselves, bibliotherapy/oral-reading, in which the students read to the class, plus the effects of basal reading instruction, on the dependent variables of self-esteem, reading achievement, and attitudes toward reading. The study further examined the interaction between the treatment and the level of students’ reading abilities. The population consisted of 105 fourth grade students, in an inner city magnet school in a southeastern, urban area. Chair: Peter Martorella. 1994.
