of America cruises of the Chesapeake Bay. Once a week, 25-30 scouts, scout leaders and parent chaparones, tie up at C & D dock and usually make a ‘bee line’ for the swimming pool! Scouts from all over the United States participate in C.H.A.S.E. This summer DYC met scouts from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Iowa and Texas. Topics of conversation include “Where is the ice cream?” “Do you have sunglasses?” and “Can we spend another night here?” No matter how many scouts come to DYC onboard the 38’ Morgan sailboats (usually 3 boats each week)...everything is clean and tidy as they sail away!

Charles Lee Joins Chesapeake Yacht Sales In June, Lew and Onna Grimm, owners of CYS and Deltaville Yachting Center, welcomed new Yacht Broker, Charles (Charlie) Lee. Charlie’s background in sales and boating are a great combination. He and his wife, Anita, have owned three Catalina sailboats. CYS is Virginia’s dealer for Catalina Yachts, so Charlie represents them well. Charlie was raised in Kilmarnock on Virginia’s Northern Neck and spent his youth on all types of boats around the creeks of the middle Chesapeake Bay. Currently living on Pittman’s Cove, just off Indian Creek, Charlie enjoys having their 2011 Catalina

RENEW YOUR FISHING LICENSE NOW http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/licenses/renew/

Serving the public since 1916, the Va. Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries continues to move forward with vigor and a sense of accomplishment. The Department receives almost 100 percent of its funds from hunting and fishing licenses, boat titling and registration fees, state sales taxes from hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching equipment and Federal Aid in Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration Funds from the sale of fishing and hunting equipment and motor boat fuel.

Funds are used to stocking 1.2 million trout into 600 miles of streams, raise over 15 million warmwater fish, operating 38 public fishing lakes, managing 177,000 acres of lakes, streams and rivers and over 2,800 miles of trout waters and providing the home for a possible new world record 143 lb. blue catfish.

DYC Techs Complete Advanced Composites & Hull Painting Course

Tony Simpson, Ricky Williams and Lew Grimm completed an Advanced Composites and Hull Painting Course in June after 16 weeks of hands-on training. The course was provided through the Marine Trade School of

Rappahannock Community College.

In the last several years, DYC has completed many hull and deck refits which included full paint jobs. The advanced techniques learned during

this training opportunity allow further services involving composites through Deltaville Yachting Center’s service department.

Schedule Haul Out & Winterization It is not too early to pre-schedule your winter haul out and winterization. Contact Laura Martin [email protected] and get on the DYC Service Schedule. You can specify when you would like the winterization work and haul-out to be done. By pre-scheduling and applying a $100 deposit toward your haul out, you hold a spot in the DYC boatyard. We already anticipate a fuller boatyard than last year, thanks to many wonderful customers. Do not wait to get on the winterization list until the first ‘bite of frost’ hits the air...by then there will be many boaters scheduled ahead of you. DYC service techs work in the order that the workorders were received and try to stay ahead of the ‘winter freeze’.

Bad Mix: Wind, Water, Power, Alcohol(Article as published on August 7, 2011 Richmond Times- Dispatch) By Captain Bill Crump

DYC friend, Rappahannock Power and Sail Squadron Officer and fellow boater has allowed us to share this article written out of frustration and anger related to the several boating accidents in the Rappahannock River area over the last year - in each case alcohol and boating made a bad mix. Please be careful and always come back to the dock as safely as you left it.

DYC Living Shoreline Grows On...Thanks to Friends of the Rappahannock and Hammertime Marine, the living shoreline errosion control project between C and D Dock continues to grow stronger. We are hoping for a calm hurricane season to allow this coir log reinforcement to take firm hold. All of the native grasses have doubled in size and quantity, as nature tries to preserve this shoreline. Barbara Kling has observed 3 great blue heron in the cove beyond the living shoreline recently.

Here is a boating tip from the Instructor’s Crow’s Nest:Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s)All boaters know that in vessels 16’ to 165’ you have to have one USCG ap-proved PFD type I, II, III or V for every person on board while underway. In ad-dition, you must have one type IV throw-able device that is immediately available and located in an accessible position on the boat.

But, did you know?:1. Virginia law requires any child under 13 years old to wear an appropriate sized PFD while they are on deck.

2. All PFDs must be readily accessible. If you can’t see it or you are unable to grab it immediately, it is not accessible. Also, they can’t be in protective cover-ings (i.e. plastic bags) if they are desig-nated for use by anyone on board.

3. All PFDs must fit the intended wearer. An adult PFD is not approved for a child and it is dangerous because the child could slip out of the device.

4. The type V PFD is a newer approved category and is a vest type device with a CO2 inflatable collar that is either manu-ally or automatically deployed. They are the most comfortable and probably the choice of most boaters that do wear PFDs routinely. However, did you know that type V PFDs have to be worn by the individual to be counted in your USCG required inventory (1 per person on board)? If type Vs are all you have and you are not wearing them, according to the USCG you have no PFD’s on board.

5. For serviceability, no PFD can exhibit: • broken, deformed or weakened buck-les both metal and plastic.• ripped, torn or separated webbing and straps • any rotted or deteriorated structural components • buoyant material that is hardened, waterlogged, compressed, oil soaked or mildewed

Stingray Point Sailing School Opens at Deltaville Yachting Center

July was a busy and exciting month as we opened our doors and welcomed the new students that had enrolled in our basic keelboat and

basic coastal cruising courses.

Being an American Sailing Association (ASA) certified training facility, Stingray Point Sailing School is offering sailing courses from

Introduction to Sailing to Advanced Coastal Cruising. The ASA curriculum is an internationally recognized training program that is

focused on teaching to a set of standards that are sanctioned by the worldwide sailing community.

Our mission at Stingray Point Sailing School is to provide high quality training and promote sailing as a fun and safe sport for the entire family. All of our training will be performed by ASA certified instructors who are

USCG licensed with Master ratings.

A prime benefit of achieving ASA certification is the credential you receive that documents your level of training achievement within the sailing community. As a practical example, certification in ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering provides the charter organizations documented

proof of your sailing skill level. Other benefits include possible insurance discounts and accomplishment of Virginia’s Boating Safety

Education requirements.

Are you an experienced sailor and you would like to take an advanced course? Talk to us about our Challenge Courses that puts you on a fast track to complete the prerequisites courses at a low cost to you in time

and money.

As the summer season winds down (What? Say it isn’t so!), Stingray Point Sailing School will offer Coastal Navigation (ASA105) courses

which can be taken without prerequisites and are appropriate for both power and sail skippers and crews. These are a four day courses and

will be offered in consecutive weekends as follows:

November: 12-13 and 19-20 January: 21-22 and 28-29 February: 4-5 and 11-12

Please go to www.dycboat.com and click on Sailing School to review the course content or call us at (804) 909-2655.

U.S. Powerboat Show “An Annapolis Tradition”Visit the nation’s oldest in-water new powerboat show from October 13th through October 16th. There will be over 400 boats in the water and on land with free seminars, boat demos and everything from inflatables to luxury yachts to look at! Chesapeake Yacht Sales will be there at the Mainship Trawlers display, so come by and say hello. TrawlerPort will have featured trawlers on display along with opportunities to gather ideas to improve the boat you already own. This year there will be ‘Take the Wheel’ interactive classes and boat demos by Cruisers University. Children 6 and under are free, so bring your family and make this 40 year old Annapolis tradition a new family tradition. Sometimes it is cold with snowflakes and other years the sun makes the ‘Jimmy Buffet’ music seem very ‘islandy’. Whatever the weather...Lew and Onna Grimm always eat at Chick & Ruth’s Dinner and look forward to talking to new and old customers who come to the Powerboat Show each year.

Visit www.usboat.com and get more information. See you on the docks!

DYC Coastal Cleanup Sept. 17thPlease join me to pick up shoreline debrise and litter on the South End of Broad Creek at the waters edge of Deltaville Yachting Center. Meet at the Ship’s Store, September 17th, Saturday at 10 AM. Wear old shoes or water boots. Bring nets, work gloves and your happy face! We will pick up, tally the contents of trash and Onna will send the report to Virginia Waterways Cleanup. The data collected is used by the Ocean Conservancy, VA State Parks, U.S. Coast Guard, National Park Service and hundreds of non profit organizations to help track trends in litter and to design litter prevention efforts.

DYC has been participating in this effort for the last 9 years! Sometimes we have 10 people helping and sometimes only 3 show up, but the litter is collected anyway and the data is sent in for this global cleanup project.

Last year’s Virginia Waterways Cleanup had a record number of statewide volunteers with 6,157 picking up 188,124 pounds of trash on 318 miles of Virginia rivers, streams and beaches! This was an all time record for the State of Virginia, ranking 7th in the nation for the number of volunteers working on this important river and beach project.

Come help us make a difference at DYC!!

DYC Weathers Irene On August 27th Hurricane Irene visited Deltaville and the entire East Coast. DYC Service Manager, Lew Grimm, implimented the Storm Haul Out Policy on Wednesday, August 24th. Fifty five boats were hauled into the boatyard and extra boats were also stored in the enclosed boatel. Service techs worked long hours prepping boats by removing canvas, sails and loose equipment if customers were unable to prepare their own vessels. Special thanks also to Laura Martin, Chet Williams and Cori Williams for all the phone calls to customers and follow up on boat insurance information in preparation for Irene’s arrival.

We are happy to report only minor damage as a result of the hurricane and are confident that the preparations made by DYC and boat owners can be credited for the good outcome. Many people in Virginia remain without power at this time, five days after the storm. DYC never totally lost power and as a result, Lew Grimm was able to send out Storm Updates via email blasts, including information from several storm monitoring sites and tidal reporting sites.

Thank you for all your kind words of appreciation. We are thankful for God’s protection during Hurricane Irene. TO RECEIVE STORM UPDATES IN THE FUTURE: Visit www.dycboat.com and add your name to the email list, now.

Preparing To Swim The English Channel(http://swimandtonic.wordpress.com)

Deltaville Yachting Center has interesting, wonderful boaters coming and going on a regular basis. When Boatel Manager, Chet Williams, said “You might want to hear about Mr. Paulk’s wife...she really is a good swimmer.” We had no idea that this boatel customer was trying to complete such a huge challenge.

It turns out that Courtney Paulk plans to swim the English Channel.... Actually, swimming the English Channel is only a small part of the task which DYC Boatel customer/swimmer, Courtney Paulk has ‘signed up’ for. Courtney and her husband Matt, keep a 22’ Bryant powerboat in the DYC Boatel, but spend most of their time in the Rappahannock during the coldest water season of Fall.

In 2010 Courtney decided to undertake the journey of completing the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. As of August 2010, only 42 people are known to have completed all three parts of the Triple Crown, which includes:

1. MIMS Manhattan Island Marathon Swim- 28.5 miles around Manhattan

2. The Catalina Channel - 21 miles between Catalina Island and the mainland of California

3. The English Channel - 21 miles from Dover, England to Cap Gris Nez France

Courtney, with husband Matt alongside in their powerboat, trains in the Rappahannock River working toward 4+hours swimming in water at a temperature of 62 degrees or less! Courtney has completed the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim for the 9th year, swimming 4.4 miles across the Bay.

BIG NEWS! On June 18, 2011 Courtney accomplished the MIMS, swimming around Manhattan Island in 8 hours, 59 minutes and 19 seconds! As the Empire State Building was in view, Courtney was able to know that her first leg of the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming has been completed! Congratulations!

To follow Courtney Paulk’s swimming journey visit http://swimandtonic.wordpress.com I especially liked the 5/14/11 pictures on the blog of Courtney trying out an energy snack of ‘Cheese Whiz’ in the Rappahannock River!
