    Dear Mr. Hirota:

    September 28, 1966

Subject: Lot for Robert Nakamura Paalaa, Waialua, Oahu Preliminary Soils Exploration

In accordance with your request, a preliminary soil exploration was made for the lot: for .Robert Nakamura at: Paalaa, Waialua, ·oahu, Tax Map Key: 6-6-01: 16 & 29.

    FIELD UlVESTIGATIONS AND tABORATORY TESTS

Five borings t-1ere made at the site as shown on the boring location plan. Representative soil samples were recovered with 211 o.d. thin wall tubes. Soundings were !Jlade with a 1-5/1611 o.d • . conical .point driven wit:h a·· 10-pound sledge hammer. Soil saiilP.les were tested in our laboratory for unit densities9 moisture contents, unconfined compression and vane shear; expansion; CBR; and Atterberg limits.

    SITE CO'DITIONS

During the field exploration at the jobsite. the following observations were made:

    1. The area was formerly a lotus farm with water probably carried into the area by auwais. The locations of existing irrigation ditches and a small ponded area are shown on the boring locaion plan.

    2. Much of the area is presently coveted with grass and shrubs and the ground surface is generally level.

    3. The ground water level is at or within about 2 feet of the ground surface.

  • MR. SM-f HIROTA, September 28, 1966 2

    4. Some soft organic muck soils "push material' were generally found in the vicinity of the ground water level surface. Below the soft layer was medium gray silty clays with oral fragments.

    FILLS

    5. Detailed descriptions of the underlying soils are shown on the attached boring logs.

6 A mound of clayey sand about 12° in height was stockpiled along the edge of the pond. See Figure 1 for approximate location.

The construction of the proposed low fills at the project site would be constructed in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 239 Revised Ordinances of Honolulu, 1961 As Amended and the recommendations given below.

    1. After clearing and grubbing, the entire stte should be drained and existing ditches should be subdrained.

    2. The surface soils should be scarified and allowed to dry and be compacted at optimum moisture. The stockpile should be removed to firm natural ground before placing any fills.

    3. \here soft pockets are encountered, the area should be dug out and backfilled to match the densities of the surrounding soils before placing any fills.

4e Fills should be constructed in thin evenly compacted layers throughout the site. Any large fills that may cause a large unbalanced load concentration should be avoided. The height of fills Should be limited to about 10 feet in height.

    DISCUSSION

The owner's present plan is to fill the lot and use it for agricultural purposes. For future developments, it is assumed that the site may be used for light residential construction. For such a development, the following should be considered:

    1. All underground utilities should be placed after the fills are constructed and before the construction of houses.

  • MR. SA HIROTA, September 28p 1966 3

    2. T he construction of surface structures ba delayed as long as possible after the fills are constructed.

    3. Sc:r:e settlement and cree? will probably occur near the top edges of fill slopes. For these reasons , buildings snould be kept at least 15' from the top edges of fill slopes.

    4. For light residential construc tion, buildings with post-and-beam foundations would be prefel"able to slab on ground.

    5. For slab-on-ground construction, a structural slab should be used to allow for probable ground movements.

    6. Pavement thick.ness should be adjusted in accordance with the

properties of fill material used within the top 2' of finish grades.

For multi-story or heavy structures, additional soil investigations should be made.

Attached are the boring l.ocation planp boring logs and laboratory test results.
