Ebrahim Alkazi: Directing ArtThe Making of a Modern Indian Art WorldEdited by Parul Dave-Mukherji
This unique volume, authored by a host of reputed scholars, offers a tribute to the legendary art aesthete, Ebrahim Alkazi, acknowledging his immense contribution to the making,
dissemination and public reception of modern Indian art. Keeping its focus on Art Heritage-a key institution setup by Alkazi, this volume signals a specific narrative of 20th century Indian art, told through Alkazi’s practices of collecting, curating, editing and art writing. Inhabiting an interstitial space between threatre and art, Alkazi occupies a distinct place in the history of modern India.

The Theatre of E. AlkaziA Modernist Approach to Indian Theatre
The catalog that accompanies the exhibition: The Theatre of E. Alkazi, traces the life and career of the distinguished theatre educationist, director, designer and an actor par excellence through a
detailed timeline. Copiously illustrated with rare photographs of the family, his activities and most importantly his productions from as far back as the 1940s to the 1990s, we travel along Alkazi’s journey as he establishes key theatre institutions in Bombay like the Theatre Group and Theatre Unit in the 1950s and 60s, followed by him assuming Directorship of the National School of Drama in New Delhi. Over sixteen years from 1962 to ‘77, Alkazi overhauls the curriculum and transforms the unassuming little space into an institution of national and international repute that produces some of the most outstanding actors and directors of the stage and screen in modern times.

“The systematic study and practical
performing experience of Sanskrit drama,
modern Indian drama, traditional Indian
forms, Asian drama, and Western drama
gives the student such a solid grounding
and such a wide perspective that he cannot
possibly pursue an erratic course later in his
professional career. It also enables him to
see each form of dramatic expression as part
of a historical process, in relation to its own
time and period, and as one element in a
continuing universal moment.”
