Ez évi első lapszámunkban egy fantasztikus utazásra hívunk a jövőbe. Nem kell aggódni, nem megyünk messzire, csak ide 2015-be. Mégis futurisztikus lesz ez a kis kirándulás, mert nagyszerű tudósainknak köszönhetően a jövő csodái már itt állnak a küszöbön, vagy már be is jöttek a jelenbe. A jövőről alkotott elképzelések, melyek korábban hihetetlennek tűntek, most itt vannak velünk, a mi valóságunkban. A gördeszka helyett már van a talaj felett lebegő légdeszka; a csokoládétól a repülőgép alkatrészeken át az emberi szövetekig mindent nyomtathatunk majd a 3D (három dimenziós) nyomtatókkal; és ha minden jól megy, egy magyar puli is eljut a Holdra.

New Year’s Resolutions

At this time of the year, people all around the world are looking back at the past 12 months. What was

good about the year? What was not so good? And what should I do differently in the months to come? It’s out with the old and in with new -- time to make some New Year’s resolutions! Those resolutions are the promises we make at the end of the year to

stop doing something bad or start doing something good. On December 31st, some people will have their last drink of alcohol, smoke their last cigarette or eat their last unhealthy meal. At least, that is what they will tell themselves just before the clock strikes midnight. Only time will tell whether or not it holds true.

We took a look at several online lists of the top New Year’s resolutions. We have combined those lists to create our own Top Five.

The most common resolution is the promise to lose weight in the New Year. Many people make that their number one goal. Not surprising the weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar business worldwide.

Coming in at number two is a two-way tie to eat healthier and become more physically active. Of course, the two go hand-in-hand with losing weight.

Spending less money, saving more and getting out of debt are tied for the next position on our list.

Next comes spending more time with family. What could be better than that?

And rounding out our list is the plan to quit smoking.

Whatever your goals are for the New Year, I wish you all the best.

The Chinese zodiac is a mathematical cycle of 12 animals. Each animal represents one year. People are associated with the animal for the year that they are born. The 12 animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Although it is called the Chinese zodiac, this system is also used in several other countries in Asia such as Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

A total solar eclipse will happen on March 20, and it will be visible in the North Atlantic. On July 1, Earth, Venus, and Jupiter will be ordered on a single line. Expo 2015 will be held in Milan, Italy. (May 5 – October 31) On September 10, if still reigning, Queen Elizabeth II will surpass her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria as Britain's longest-reigning monarch. A partial solar eclipse will occur on September 13. On December 15, mobile phone roaming charges will be abolished within the European Union. 2015 is the earliest year the European Space Agency might launch the Darwin Mission to search for habitable exoplanets. And last but not least, 2015 is the year when hopefully our Hungarian team will set the date for Puli’s travel to the Moon. You can read more about this in the next article.

So far missions to the Moon have only been conducted by national governments. These missions learned a lot about the planet, but they were very expensive and lacked any long-term plan. In 1972, Moon 1.0 was abandoned.

Now Moon 2.0 is here – with a difference. The Google Lunar X PRIZE (GLXP) – also known as Moon 2.0, - is a global race to put a robot on the Moon. It is a space competition organized by the X Prize Foundation, and sponsored by Google. The competitors are not governments, but private enterprises. The Moon 2.0 challenge calls for privately-funded teams to compete to send a robotic spacecraft to the Moon.

Eddig a nemzeti kormányok kiváltsága volt a Hold felfedezése. Az emberiség sok információt szerzett a bolygóról a Holdra szállások által, azonban a hatalmas költségek miatt a Hold 1.0 küldetések 1972-ben abbamaradtak.

Most itt a Hold 2.0 – de más játékszabályok szerint. Google will award the $20 million grand prize to the first team that • lands a privately developed robotic craft on the moon, • moves it across the surface while sending images and data to Earth, and • does so by the end of 2016. In the summer of 2010 a group of Hungarian space enthusiasts led by Dr. Tibor Pacher decided to enter the Google Lunar X Prize competition as “Team Puli.” Then they founded Puli Space Technologies company in order to support it.

They chose to name their team and company after the ancient Hungarian dog breed, Puli, which is an extremely intelligent and energetic type of dog. It has been used as a working dog for centuries and it is famous for its obedient nature. No doubt the Hungarian team has the intelligence and hopefully the spacecraft will work as obediently as a good Hungarian puli dog – so I think the name was an excellent choice.

As the deadline nears, the 18 competitors all over the world are designing, building and testing prototypes. Aerospace veterans and young engineers are key contributors, but university students and recent graduates are particularly passionate about their projects. The Puli spacecraft is planned to be launched by a commercial carrier rocket, and to reach the Moon on its own. The rover will run on four "wheg" (wheel of legs) structures. During 2012 the rover of that concept was constructed and then underwent running tests.

The competition has an educational outreach program, and many teams emphasize educational goals. Israel’s SpaceIL, for instance, pledged to donate any prize money to science, technology, engineering and mathematics education for middle-school children. Hungary’s Puli Space “also considers it a top priority to promote scientific thinking and to encourage students in choosing a career in science.” Possibly the real winners are not even in the competition. Thousands of young people around the world follow the XPrize finalists on the competition’s website and social media. Those age 9 to 17 are invited to create robots that simulate lunar missions. Several teams plan to continue their efforts even after the XPrize competition ends. Omega, based in Florida, hopes to offer payload delivery to the moon, while Moon Express, from California, wants to extract minerals from the moon. Most competitors consider themselves winners, regardless of who captures the prize. Rahul Narayan, who started the Indus team, based in India, sees the race as an once-in-a-lifetime adventure — “a fantastic engineering feat.” Peter Diamandis, founder of the XPrize, asserts that entrepreneurs have much to contribute, even if they lack a scientific background. The most critical step, he says, is “focusing on your passion and becoming knowledgeable and curious.” Fundraising is crucial to staying in the race. A few finalists sell project data to NASA. All seek sponsorship money from private companies and universities. Individuals can support their favourite team as well.

Interesting Things about Queen Elizabeth II Queen Elizabeth II is the fortieth monarch since William the Conqueror obtained the crown of England. In 2002, at 76 years of age, The Queen was the oldest monarch to celebrate a Golden Jubilee. Since 1952, The Queen has conferred over 387,700 honours and awards. The Queen speaks fluent French and often uses the language for State Visits. Her Majesty does not need an interpreter. The Queen has received over 3 million items of correspondence during her reign. Around 1.1 million people have attended Garden Parties at Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Holyroodhouse. During her reign, The Queen has received many unusual gifts including live animals. The more unusual animals have been placed in the care of the London zoo, for example, jaguars and sloths from Brazil, and two black beavers from Canada. The Queen has also received gifts of pineapples, eggs, a box of snail shells and 7kg of prawns. The Queen learnt to drive in 1945 when she joined the Army.

The Queen's real birthday is on April 21, but it is celebrated officially in June. The Queen has given out about 78,000 Christmas puddings to staff continuing the custom of King George V and King George VI. The Queen also gives all her staff a gift at Christmas time. The Queen is a keen photographer and enjoys taking photographs of her family. The Duke of York is also a keen photographer and has taken a number of photographs of The Queen, including an official photograph for Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee in 2002. The Queen has 30 godchildren. The Queen has sat for 139 official portraits during her lifetime. Her Majesty was just seven years old when she sat for her first portrait in 1933, which was painted by the Hungarian artist Philip Alexius de László. The Queen sat for the first and only hologram portrait in 2003. There have been 11 sculptures of The Queen. The most recent was in 2005 by Miss Angela Conner for St George's Chapel, Windsor. The Queen sent her first email in 1976 from an Army base. History was made in 1982 when Pope John Paul II visited Britain, the first Pope to do so for 450 years. The Queen, Head of the Church of England, received him at Buckingham Palace. The Queen has had more than 30 corgis during her reign, starting with Susan who was a present for her 18th birthday in 1944. A good proportion of these have been direct descendants from Susan. The Queen currently has five corgis, Emma, Linnet, Monty, Holly and Willow.

In the second part of the Back To The Future trilogy, in 1985 Doc Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) uses the time machine to go 30 years into the future. He takes Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his girlfriend, Jennifer (Elisabeth Shue), to 2015, when the justice system works swiftly without lawyers, automated clothing is in vogue and people travel in flying cars and on hoverboards. The movie came out in 1989, so director Robert Zemeckis and his team could mostly rely on their creativity when they tried to imagine what the world would be like in 2015. Now we are here and we don’t even need to time travel to see the world in 2015. Aren’t we lucky? Robert Zemeckis said that they did not try to give a scientifically accurate depiction of the future. “I don't really like films that try and predict the future,” he said. “We thought, let's just make it funny.” However, the film did accurately predict a number of technological changes. For example,

Some of my personal favourites are the following: In the film, automatic dog-walkers were automatic hovering leashes fixed to a dog's collar to walk it when the owner was busy. Marty McFly saw one of these in Hilldale the night he and Doc Brown tried to rescue Jennifer Parker from their future residence, and walked away to do some exploring of Hilldale. Actually, devices that could make this concept a reality do in fact exist, but they are not widely available. I wonder how my dog would feel about one, though…

In the film, a hydrator was a device in 2015 that hydrated and reheated dehydrated foods in a similar way to a microwave. They were voice-controlled, as Grandma Lorraine gave the instruction "Hydrate level 4, please!" aloud into a speaker grille on the device. After placing a four-inch diameter dehydrated pizza into the hydrator for twelve seconds, Lorraine brought out a large pizza

that was at least fifteen inches in diameter. The pizza was hot, but the metal plate under it was at normal temperature, as Lorraine was able to handle it with her bare hands. Actually, unfortunately, there is no known technology that could make a hydrator feasible in the near future. At the moment, dehydrated foods are still hydrated the old-fashioned way. In the film, a suspended animation kennel was a device invented by the early 21st century that allowed animals to go into suspended animation while their owners were away. When the animals woke up, it was like only a day had passed. Emmett Brown placed Einstein (his dog) in a suspended animation kennel in 2015. In the film, The US Weather Service controlled weather in the year 2015. The weather seemed to be planned in advance, and was controlled by the Weather Service in the Hill Valley, California area. The Weather Service was controlling rain on the afternoon of October 21, 2015. Doc Brown knew when the storm would end. It was extremely accurate, and Doc said that it was more efficient than the Post Office. Actually, although it is possible for scientists to manipulate or alter weather conditions, we're still a long way from having organizations like the US Weather Service of 2015 that are able to both control and schedule weather.

Perhaps the most obvious contradiction to the actual future seems to be the existence of flying cars and air motorways as seen in the film. However, a prototype flying car was released in 2013, with a price tag of $35,000. Moreover, flying cars are expected to hit the commercial market in 2015 from a Massachusetts-based company named Terrafugia with a propeller-and-jet based car. So who knows what the future holds?

After the movie, there was a high demand for the Nike sport shoes Marty wears with automatic shoelaces, which fans thought to be real. Nike patented auto-lacing in April 2009. In 2010, fan Blake Bevin designed a shoe with working automatic lacing at the touch of a button. During an interview, director Robert Zemeckis jokingly said that the hoverboards (flying skateboards) used in the movie were real. A surprising number of people thought he was telling the truth and wanted to buy them at toy stores. Later, in another interview, Zemeckis made it clear that it was just a joke and hoverboards did not exist. Can you imagine riding around the streets of your hometown on a skateboard without wheels? In the late

1980s, film director Robert Zemeckis showed a skateboard floating above the ground in his movie Back To The Future Part II. Now, an American company, Arx Pax, has moved the idea for such a device from a futuristic dream to reality. The new product operates on the same rules that govern magnetism. When similarly charged ends of two magnets get close together, they repel or push away from each other. That force can make an object levitate or hover in space. Since the 1980s, levitation has been used on trains in Europe, Japan and China. These maglev trains, seem to float above the ground. There is no contact between the bottom of the cars and the surface of the train track. Maglev trains are almost noiseless and can move very fast. Greg Henderson says the same technology can make anything hover, even buildings. “Imagine that there's an earthquake and the early warning system turns on the hover systems and the supports fall away as the building starts to hover. The shaking stops, the supports return,

and no one in that room or in that building ever knew there was an earthquake." Greg Henderson’s company created the first maglev hoverboard, called Hendo. It can hold a single person about 2.5 centimeters above a metal surface. Batteries provide the electricity needed to power Hendo's four engines. However, the batteries only last for a short time. But design engineer Kyle O'Neil says they last long enough for experienced skateboarders to learn how to control the hoverboard. “Some people say it's like snowboarding. Some say it's how they imagined a hoverboard is supposed to be, which is kind of an interesting response because no one's ever ridden one before.” The creators of Hendo say they do not expect to see their hoverboard on the streets anytime soon. The reason: it only works on a metal-covered surface. But they say larger hover engines could be used to transport containers in storerooms. For now, their dream is to build a recreation area where anyone can take a ride on a hoverboard

Terry Wohlers is an expert and president of Wohlers Associates Inc., a Colorado-based consulting firm that has advised industry on technology for more than two decades. Yet he admits to being personally frustrated when it comes to his firm’s own special focus, additive manufacturing, or 3-D printing. It is a process of making solid objects from a three-dimensional digital design. Wohlers experiments with an inexpensive personal 3-D printer he owns, last winter printing Christmas ornaments, for example. The machine has proven to be “anything but rock solid,” he said. So when the media and enthusiasts rave about a 3-D industrial revolution, he prefers to call it an “evolution” that can eventually lead to radical changes in manufacturing, entrepreneurship, health care and other areas. “We’re not quite there yet,” Wohlers said. Boeing is a 3-D printing pioneer. It has been using the technology developed in the late 1980s to produce parts. The technology is particularly fit for complex or customized parts made in limited quantities. This characteristic combined with falling costs of 3-D printers has got the attention of other manufacturers. A Business Owner’s Dream With the arrival of smaller, cheaper printers, the interest in 3-D printing has exploded among business owners and artists, who can now make design changes to inexpensive products and run small, yet profitable, batches. Since 2008, sales of personal 3-D printers have increased 65-fold to more than 23,260 in 2011, according to a 2012 Wohlers Report. Wohlers compares the expansion of 3-D to the advent of the personal computing era. “Initially only few had access to large machines,“ he said. “Now we have [smaller] systems that anybody can purchase.”

Some small businesses print small, ordinary goods, such as iPhone cases and doorknobs, or action figures. Others make more serious products such as surgical tools, prosthetics, medical implants and hearing aids that are tailored to patients' unique bone or organ structures. Creative types, like Summer Powell, find other applications. A jewelry designer from San Francisco, Powell “discovered” 3-D printing, she said, due to her desire for massive diamond earrings. “There was nothing on the market like the picture in my head,” Powell said. So she printed her own diamonds. 3-D allows her to create “amazing shapes,” she said, ones that would be “difficult or impossible to produce with other media.” A number of startups claim that they are developing break-through products that range from gourmet food to drug-delivery systems to human tissue. “3-D printers are going to change everything in our lifetime," said Black Eyed Peas frontman, fashion designer and technology innovator Will.i.am at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. But Wohlers said many projects are 10, 20 or more years away from marketable results. Nevertheless, he continues to experiment with his printer because he believes in technology’s potential. Eventually, he said, “3-D printing will help many people realize their dreams.”
