Walking across our extended campus, from the Coogan Farm to the Nature Center, is an idyllic way to bypass road congestion by foot or by bike along old farm trails, fields and across the brook, as the path less traveled. Getting from here to there with your senses tuned to scents, sights and sounds along the way is undeniably mystical and – nature is good for your soul. How does one wander from Greenmanville to Pequotsepos without road travel? It is an easily accomplished one-mile walk that offers connections to Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, Olde Mistick Village and the Denison Homestead along the way.

Starting at the Avery Farmhouse, go through the main gate (farm road) and follow the blue markers past a large White Ash tree, Giving Garden, and maintenance barn, to a fork in the path facing a large Juniper. Pause for a moment and notice the stone walls here that define a 17th Century pentway used for travel and to move cattle and sheep between farms. Keep right on the blue trail, past a curious chimney or a man-made habitat for

chimney swifts to support their conservation. Note the unusually high stone wall, built tall to fence in bulls. A little further up the hill at the intersection, stay right on the blue trail and continue to the gravel powerline trail. The Pleasant Street path (a route through the Seaport Heights neighborhood to Mystic Seaport) connects here. Stay on the blue path under the powerline. You’ll notice the pink trail on your left that follows the ridge and heads back towards an old quarry. At the base of the hill, a left on the powerline trail leads towards Masonicare, Mystic Aquarium and Olde Mistick Village. Instead, keep right and head back into the woods. After crossing a short wooden bridge, the trail continues through Denison fields (follow the marked, mowed path to the right, along the edge of the field). At opening into next field, continue to follow blue posts to the left. (A sharp left connects to Maritime Drive and Coogan Boulevard; going right across the field leads to the Denison Farm Trail (yellow) with options to connect to Mistuxet Ave or Rossie Street).

Stay left along this field, and left (back into the woods) to cross Pequotsepos Brook, (the little River of the Pequots) for which the Nature Center is named. It is sacred to indigenous people who lived here. A five-cornered intersection marked by a huge White Pine with five arms awaits. This elder pine survived the 1938 hurricane and seems to indicate it wise to stay right and follow the blue trail. This will lead you into the Farmer’s Market field where you’ll stay left, cross over a wooden walkway before the Denison Homestead and across Pequotsepos Road to the Nature Center.

Change is in the air with shortening days and cooler nights. Whatever it is about this time of year that inspires and motivates change, a new season is always a time of transition in nature, and in us. You’ll notice exciting internal and external changes here at DPNC/Coogan Farm.

Perhaps you’ve heard the news that Kim Hargrave, former Education Director of 16 years, has returned to the Nature Center. When Molly Check moved to PA to be closer to her family, we reached out to Kim about the possibility of a return to DPNC. Turns out, our timing was perfect! Lifelong locals, Kim and her family were eager to come home

to CT. Also returning to DPNC - Chelle Farrand - as Volunteer Coordinator. Chelle brings a deep knowledge of the organization and Mystic history. We are thrilled to have Kim and Chelle back!

Another transition is the hiring of Tricia Cunningham as Director of Development. Tricia was President of the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce for 7 years, and more recently Director of Development and Community Relations at Fairview Odd Fellows Home in Groton. Local resident, Tricia’s diverse connections and involvement in the community make her ideally suited for this position.

At our facility on Pequotsepos Road, we are remodeling the area around the front desk and store to better serve our members and the public. When we moved the main building entrance to the parking lot level in the 1990s, this became the gateway to DPNC funneling visitors, program participants, members and school groups through the front entry. The upper exhibit area also functions as a gathering space. The adjacent space devoted to our gift shop is a prime area in the building with natural light and views of nature out every window. After a strategic review of the store plan, we decided to transition the store to Coogan Farm and create a new multi-purpose classroom space for programs, especially suited for our popular early childhood series. This entry-level room allows easy access for parents with small children and for members with limited mobility and will include a seating area overlooking the sanctuary providing a view through the Tulip Tree and out to the pond. The new space will also serve as a gathering spot for group orientations. Downstairs, the preschool room will be utilized as originally intended as a multi-purpose space for craft preparation and a place where teachers and staff can meet, have lunch and plan programs.

Changes are also happening around the Coogan Farm. We have installed interpretive signs at key points of interest along the main loop trail- a walk through time from pre-colonial to present that highlights the unique history of this cultural landscape and the people who helped shape it. We have marked a trail (sky blue) as a direct route linking our facilities at the Nature Center and Coogan Farm. Residents and visitors are discovering the network of paths connecting neighborhoods and businesses from Greenmanville to Pequotsepos, Mistuxet, Maritime and Clara drives, Pleasant Street and Coogan Boulevard. These greenway connections are there for the community to explore and enjoy. By foot, bike, snowshoes or skis, one can easily bypass the busy intersections around Exit 90 and enjoy the solitude, sights and sounds of nature all year long. We continue to collaborate with Avalonia, the Denisons, the Town of Stonington and other neighbors to manage and maintain this valued trail system.

Inside the John E. Avery Welcome Center, DPNC educator and artist Rob Reas is putting the finishing touches on a timeline mural that orients visitors to the history and families of the property, dating back to pre-colonial Pequots and the first European colonists, the Gallups.

Nowhere is change more evident than in the surrounding landscape. As trees lose leaves and herbaceous plants die back in response to cold weather and reduced sunlight, Farm Manager Craig Floyd and his team in the Giving Garden work hard year round to maximize production, including planning and planting for winter in our high tunnel. We have plans to add more flex-ible greenhouse space, where we can continue to grow root vegetables and winter-hardy food crops, providing nutritious food for our neighbors in need through the coming months.

Enjoy the magic of nature in every day and season!

at Nature Center CampusEarly childhood programs at the Nature Center are getting an upgrade. A new, multi-purpose space where the Nature Center Store was located will now be used for programming. “We’ve outgrown the small classroom and overflow camp space at the Nature Center, so shifting the store to Coogan Farm for easier access gave us an opportunity to create a bigger, open classroom upstairs,” says Associate Director/Preschool Director Davnet Schaffer. The new space opens for educational use in September and when not in use for programs will be avail-able to members for relaxation or bird viewing. A smaller kiosk will remain at the Nature Center campus for t-shirts and seed pickups during the appropriate seasons.

The Nature Center Store will now find its permanent home at the Coogan Farm Nature & Heritage Center off Route 27. The combining and shifting of the store to the John E. Avery Welcome Center is designed to give store patrons a centralized location for purchasing nature-themed merchandise offering increased display and storage space. The Welcome Center will feature a customized mural painted by artist Rob Reas. “It’s almost as if the walls are talking and telling us the storied history of the Farm and the surrounding landscapes,” says Schaffer. And as the Welcome Center and store continues to transform, there is no better way to wrap up a visit than with a walk in the woods.

Monday - Friday, April 30 to May 25, 2018 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Ages 13-18 $650
