Gregory Henderson
Gregory Henderson은 “Korea: The Politics of the Vortex”의 저자로서 미국의
Princeton University
Revised Standard Version (RSV)임

1:1 In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God.
Aramaic
Alexander the Great (BCE 356-323)
Greece,
4
Asia
Rome Culture
Zionism
(King David)
따라서 Messiah(Hebrew) 또는 Christ(Greek)를 다윗의 후손에서 기다리게 됨
(Aramaic language)

‘Logos’
(Paul)

In the beginning, …
In the beginning was the Word (existence),
and the Word was with God (relationship)
and the Word was God (predication)
‘The beginning’
Jesus!
Light = God ⇔ Darkness = Cosmos(World)

Logos와 Greek Philosophy
Heraclitus(c. 535-475 BCE)
Pre-Socratic Fragments

I searched into myself (Fr. 101).
One should quench arrogance more promptly than a conflagration (Fr. 43).
When you have listened, not to me but to the law (=Logos), it is wise to agree
that all things are one (Fr. 50).
It is not possible to step twice into the same river. (It is impossible to touch the
same mortal substance twice, but through the rapidity of change) they scatter
and again combine (or rather, not even ‘again’ or ‘later’) but the combination and
separation are simultaneous) and approach and separate (Fr. 91).
This ordered universe, which is the same for all, was not created by only one of
the gods or of mankind, but it was ever and is and shall be ever-living Fire,
kindled in measure and quenched in measure (Fr. 30).

Human nature has no power of understanding; but the divine nature has it (Fr.

To souls, it is death to become water (Fr. 36).
A dry (desiccated) soul is the wisest and best (Fr. 118).
Light ⇔
Darkness

where he is going, having his soul wet (Fr. 117).
There is an exchange: all things for Fire and Fire for all things, like goods for

The way up and down is one and the same (Fr. 60).

One should know that war is general (universal) and jurisdiction is strife, and
everything comes about by way of strife and necessity (Fr. 80).
Karl Marx

Heraclitus

(It the way can be spoken of, it is not

Heraclitus
Heraclitus
“Logos is immanent in change.”
Parmenides
Parmenides (c. 510 BCE – c. 450 BCE):
[J15]: The traditional
interpretation of
Parmenides' work is that
he argued that the every-
day perception of reality
of the physical world (as
described in doxa) is
mistaken, and that the
reality of the world is 'One
Being' (as described in
aletheia): an unchanging,
ungenerated,
indestructible whole.
Under 'way of seeming',
Parmenides set out a
contrasting but more
conventional view of the
world, thereby becoming
an early exponent of the
duality of appearance and
reality. For him and his
pupils the phenomena of
movement and change
are simply appearances
of a static, eternal reality.

Parmenides
(Plato)
Hellenism + Judaism ⇒ Christology
Whereas Heraclitus interpreted all reality as change, Parmenides pictured the
universe as a single, permanent substance (the theory of Metaphysical Monism).
In other words, all our concepts must have corresponding real objects in the
external world, for otherwise they could not be thought. It is absurd to talk about
nonexistent Beings, which would be identical with nothingness. Thought and the

Consequently, indirect antithesis to Heraclitus, Parmenides denied the reality of
change or motion, because motion implies empty space, an unoccupied area into
which an object may enter, but empty space is nothingness, an unreality. In order
for a thing to move, it must move into occupied space, and it already occupied.
Therefore, nothing can move, and, since motion does not exist, Being is
changeless.
Motion and change are mere illusions, comparable to the phenomena created
when still moves are shown in rapid succession on a moving-picture screen.

metaphysical and
theological view that all is
of one essence, principle,

that there is one,

Monism is to be

dualism, which holds that
ultimately there are two
kinds of substance, and
from pluralism, which
holds that ultimately there
are many kinds of
substance.

The Gospel of John portrays John the Baptist as being clearly superseded by
Jesus. The Gospel states that when John was baptizing at Aenon, a debate
broke out between some of the disciples of John (See John 4:1) over the
issue of ceremonial cleansing. The Jews pointed out that Jesus was also
baptizing, but baptizing more people than John (but in actuality it was Jesus’
disciples doing the baptizing, not Jesus himself—see John 4:2).
John explained to them that Jesus “must become greater” while he, John,
must become less (John 3:30). Although the Gospel later goes on to state
that Jesus regarded John as a burning and a shining lamp, it also says that
Jesus referred to John as something that people were glad to enjoy ... for a
while (John 5:35). The Gospel of John also portrays the disciples of John as
eventually merging into the followers of Jesus, in contrast to the Synoptics
where they remain two distinct groups as long as they are mentioned. But
still, it is important to note that it is possible that the authors of the
Synoptics did not think it needful, as part of the argument that they were
making to their audiences, to mention the union of the two groups.

‘the Lamb of God’: Jesus를 유월절에 제사로 바치는 어린 양에 비유한 것은,

‘Spirit come down like a dove’:

1:50 Jesus answered him, "Because I
said to you, I saw you under the fig tree,
do you believe? You shall see greater
things than these."
1:51 And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I
say to you, you will see heaven opened,
and the angels of God ascending and
descending upon the Son of man."
