    “Bonnie Macfarlane”2015 SASS

    Western Divisional Top Woman

    by Marcia Johnson

The Escondido Fish and Game Association has a Cowboy Action Shooting Club called the Escon-dido Bandidos. Metal targets are shot with revolvers, rifles and shotguns in the Old West cowboy style wearing holsters and 19th century attire. The matches are sanctioned by the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS).

The 2015 SASS U.S. Open West-ern Divisional Championship was held in Norco, CA on Octo-ber 15-18, where 216 Cowboys and Cowgirls gathered for the “Gunfight Behind the Jersey Lilly” match. Regional and state cow-boy action shooting champions were there in mass competing for the honor of representing the 13 western states: AL, HI, CA, NV, UT, CO, AZ, NM, OR, WA, ID, MT and WY.

The 2015 SASS Western Divisional male and female champions were “Single Barrel” and “Bonnie Macfarlane”. Bonnie (Carly when not on the range) is a Junior shooter with the Escondido Ban-didos at EFGA and we are all extremely proud of her! She recently graduated from Bell Middle School in Menifee with straight A’s and now attends Paloma High School. She travels with her grandparents, Austin and Debi Smith, to the various big southwestern SASS events while maintain-ing those outstanding grades!

The Escondido Bandidos shoot on the first Saturday of every month and encourage folks to come out and watch the 40 to 50 cowboy and cowgirl shooters. If you would like to watch the top Fe-male Shooter in the Western US, “Bonnie Macfarlane”, then by all means, stop by and see her in action! The February 2016 SASS National Championship honors free entries to the two winners (male and female) from each of the three Divisionals (Western, Central, Eastern). You can be sure that the Es-condido Bandidos will be cheering Bonnie on to becoming the 2016 Ladies National Champion.

Lead is a major health problem for indoor ranges. Fortunately it is less so for outdoor ranges such as ours. None the less we do need to

monitor it and address it for the safety of our members and to stay ahead of ever expanding government regulations. All Shoot Chairs have been sent a survey letter on the issue. I suggest, that any Shoot Chairs who have been negligent getting

their replies to me, to get busy. This is not a frivolous matter and needs to be addressed ASAP!

In a meeting completely different from guns and stuff, a lady came up to me who recognized me from a recent “Women on Target Class”. She went on and on about how valuable she thought the class was. Naturally, I in all modesty told her that Linda Linaker deserved much of the credit. She works very hard to put these classes together. I also pointed out that a lot of guys show up to assist as coaches. So hats off to all. The class appears to be an excellent community public relations tool for our Association and for Gun Rights in general. The lunch served was excellent also!

The range clean-up last week allowed us to explore some ways to separate bullets from dirt. A portion of the recovered lead bullets will eventually be made available to our membership for re-use, the rest will be recycled.

Our annual Christmas meeting was certainly a success this year. The raffle table was loaded with a gargantuan array of items well worth a few bucks spent of tickets. Bud Smith and his crew did a yeoman’s job of getting the items together and deserve a special thank you. Lucky for a few members who brought their truck with them!

One last reminder to any RSOs who wish to upgrade to NRA RSO Certification; the date for the next class is January 30. I have to know who wants to attend no later than the Friday January 8th. I have to order booklets from the NRA and they are not known for speedy delivery!

The small RSO box contains name badges. There are several in the box so if you have not picked your up yet please do so. Additionally there are First Aid cards for those of you who have not picked them up from the last first aid class.

Here is hoping that Santa was good for you. Be sure to read all the safety instructions before you bring your new toys to the range! Keep the different caliber ammunition separate and tell Santa any ammo that attracts a magnet is not allowed on the range.

    Until next year…..

How to place a classified ad in the

newsletter Please help to keep the classified section easy to read and well organized. There is no cost as long as you are an EF&GA member in good standing. Classified ads run for ONE newsletter (one month). If you want to repeat an ad for another month (with price adjustments, etc…) simply re-submit the ad request via e-mail.

Please submit requests for classified ads via email to [email protected] and be sure to double-check for spelling and grammar errors.

It may sound obvious but requests for classifieds are frequently received with not enough information to be useful to a reader. There are 5 main components of a classified ad:

Category – Most classifieds fall into one of 3 catego-ries, ‘For Sale’, ‘Wanted’, or ‘Lost & Found’.

Subject/Title – This will appear in bold in the advertise-ment. This should be short (2 or 3 words) and concise.

Description – This is the body of the advertisement and can be a few sentences but not more than a paragraph. Abbreviations appear cryptic and are not recommend-ed unless they are well known acronyms.

Price – A specific dollar amount as well as qualifiers give the reader important information. For example, “$600 or Best Offer, Buyer pays DROS, Will consider trades”

Contact Info – This should be a name AND a phone number (including area code) and/or an e-mail address.

    Energy Efficiency Improvements Coming Soon

Everyone’s electric bill is steadily going up as SDG&E has been in-creasing the price per kilowatt as well as charging additional sur-charges for the privilege of having each kilowatt delivered to your electrical meter. EF&GA has the same problem on a larger scale.

In order to combat this problem and reign in the costs we have worked with SDG&E and their partner company (Willdan Energy Solutions) to find grant programs to make the range more efficient.

We will be upgrading most of the lighting (indoor as well as out-door) to products that last longer and use less electricity. We ex-pect the installation to happen during the first quarter of 2016.

Basic range safetyBy David Welchons, Junior Coach

As we’re all coming back from the holi-days it’s important to remember safety. Everyone knows the basic firearm safety rules; but nonetheless I’m going to repeat them. Repetition is key in memorization, and what you practice is what you’ll do. This is something that we as Jr. Coaches repeat at every Jr. Shoot, multiple times per shoot.

Treat every firearm as if were loaded. Mistakes happen. A firearm you thought was empty could still be loaded, and that’s when someone gets hurt. Be especially careful with semi-automatics. Remember, semi-automatics, even when the magazine is out of the gun, can still have a round chambered.

Never point a firearm at anything you don’t intend to destroy. As much fun as it can be to shoot one, a fire arm is not a toy. The last thing you want is to have the gun go off when you’re not on target, and hit something or someone you didn’t intend to shoot.

Keep your finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard until you intend to fire. You are the first line of safety. If you don’t have your finger resting on the trig-ger you’re a whole lot less likely to have a negligent discharge. (there is no such thing as an ‘accidental’ discharge)

Keep the firearm on “safe” until ready to fire. But, do not fully rely on the safety. The “safety” is not there so you can forget

JR. CORNERall the other rules. I have seen the “safe-ty” fail on a gun, and if I was relying on it as my only form of safety it could have been a very bad day.

Cease fire; remember wherever you are at, whether at the range or in the des-sert, when someone calls a cease fire, make safe your firearm and echo the call. Cease fire is called because of an unsafe act or an unsafe condition. Everyone is a range safety officer, and if you see an unsafe act or an unsafe condition call “cease fire!” so the problem can be made safe.

November 28th, 2015 Work PartyThanks to all who showed up and participated in the work party in November. We completed a lot of smaller projects as well as cleaning the trap ranges. The berms on the Pistol range were replenished, the target frame slots were cleaned on all of the ranges, firewood was stacked, weeds were cleared, and leaves were raked. We had a bunch of Junior members as well as a gaggle of Sea Cadets. Everyone had a good time working together and 99 people of all ages participated.

I want to take this opportunity to recognize each of you by name. If you know any of them, be sure to thank them for making our facility beautiful and safe. If I spelled your name incorrectly, please print your name on the green sheet clearly next time.
