e - Gazette Mk II
New Zealand Antique & Historical Arms Association Inc January 2011
EDITORIAL
Dennis Lally sent his last e – Gazette just two hours after getting out of hospital, how is that for dedication
to duty? We wish him a speedy recovery and best wishes for an enjoyable retirement from being our Editor.
We start the new year with a new format for the e-Gazette Mk II, I hope you find something of interest in its
e-pages. My November issue was a trial run to see if I could knock something together, my thanks to all of
you who have shown your support by signing up to the Mk II version.
If you have comments to make or news or articles to contribute, send them to [email protected]

INTERESTING BAYONETS (Photo Phil Cregeen)
Bayonet collecting is a rewarding aspect of historical arms collecting, and can provide for some interesting
discoveries. Also they are an important accessory to any military rifle and as such attract the interest of
military collectors.
The aim here is to present bayonets that are different from those normally associated with a particular
firearm. If you have one that you would like to discuss then send a picture and description to
My first offering is known as an Israeli No 6. It has a 216 mm blade, MRD of 16.5mm and fits the SMLE. It
is not known whether they were made in Britain under contract or in Israel. This bayonet is very similar to
the British No 6 which was first introduced in 1944 for Jungle fighting and intended for Australia and India
who were still using the SMLE, however apart from a few trials examples it never went into production. The
Israeli version is 13 mm longer and has a slightly different profile to the point.
CALISHER & TERRY CARBINE REGISTER ( Photos by John Osborne)
As part of the research into New Zealand Issued Arms the team have started to compile a register of Calisher
& Terry Carbines. We would be pleased to hear from anyone who owns one and would be interested in the
following details which should be sent to [email protected] :
Serial Number: (on trigger guard tang and or bolt handle, under side of barrel and inside lock)
Military marks: (usually on butt tang)
Type: Military, (saddle ring bar?) Sporting, Early Model, Late Model
Held By: Name of current holder, or can be anonymous
Top: early model, heavy iron barrel 21.5 -22 in. Bottom: later model, shorter lighter barrel 21 in
Left early model muzzle Dia. 20.25, Right later model muzzle Dia. 18.8, raised sight.
INTERSTING PLACES ( Photos by Pam Cregeen)
Have you been somewhere interesting and think others would like to know about it? Please tell me about it.
In early December my wife Pam and I took a train excursion from Whangarei to Auckland organised by the
Railway Enthusiasts Society. After 5 hours on the train I now know why there is no normal passenger
service on this route. Part of the outing was a choice of four afternoon excursions: Howick Historical
Village, Auckland Zoo, Auckland War Memorial Museum and shopping in the CBD.
We chose Howick Historical village as it was a new venue for us and I must say that I was very impressed
with this piece of early New Zealand settlement. Gathered together on one site are approximately 34 original
houses and public buildings dating from the 1850s and laid out as they would have been in a Fencibles
village of that period. Inside the buildings are displayed the furniture and belongings of the peopled who
lived in this period.
Fencibles were men retired from the British Army, who were recruited in England and Ireland to go to the
colonies to act as a defence force for the early settlements. They were given passage to New Zealand and
the promise of a cottage and an acre of land for themselves and their families in return for 7 year service.
On arrival they found no cottages and many lived in tents or Raupo cottages until the houses were built. The
first Fencibles arrived in Auckland in 1847. Ten ships brought a total of 2500 men, women and children
who were settled in four villages around Auckland: Howick, Otahuhu, Onehunga and Panmure. When not
undertaking military duties the Fencibles worked as normal labourers and tradesmen. In fact the Fencibles
were never called upon to fight.
My only disappointment in this visit was that I failed to see any display of uniforms or weapons used by the
Fencibles in their military role.
Howick Historical Village is located on Bell Road, Pakuranga, Auckland. Tel. 09 576 9506
