SCANNER SETUP

8

Before connecting the scanner to a computer, the DiMAGE Scan Utility must first be installed.Read the software instruction manual for the installation procedure.

The scanner should be placed on a level surface free from vibrations. It should be located awayfrom direct sunlight and in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area.

Before connecting the scanner to a computer

The computer and all peripheral devices must beoff before connecting the scanner.

With the front door closed, turn on the scannerwith the power switch (1). Start up the computer.

When launching the DiMAGE Scan Utility, thefront door must be closed during initialization; theindicator lamp will blink when the scanner is ini-tializing. Once the indicator lamp glows steadily, the scanner can be used.

Connect the power cable to the ACadapter unit (1). Connect the outputplug of the AC adapter to the scanner’sDC terminal (2). Plug the power cableinto a standard household outlet (3).

Remove the protective cap from the IEEE 1394port. Securely plug the cable into the scanner’sand computer’s IEEE 1394 port. Either end ofthe cable can be connected to the IEEE 1394port on the scanner or computer.

LOADING THE FILM HOLDERS

10

Handling film

Where is the emulsion?

To achieve the best possible reproduction from the scanner, the film and film holder should befree from dust and dirt. Always work with processed film in a clean, dust-free environment. Handlefilm by the edges or mount to prevent fingerprints and dirt marring the image area. Special lintfree gloves are available from photographic equipment retailers for film handling as well as anti-static cloths, brushes, and blowers for removing dust. Film cleaner can be used to remove oil, grease, or dirt from film; carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions and precautions for thefilm cleaning solvent.

When film is scanned, the emulsion side of the film should be down. When viewing the filmimage, if the image is orientated correctly rather than a mirror image, the emulsion side is facingdown. If the image is abstract or symmetrical so its orientation is difficult to determine, the emul-sion is down if the frame numbers and edge markings can be read correctly. With mounted slides, the emulsion is on the same side of the mount as the film manufacturer's or processor’s name isprinted.

Film strips of up to six frames can beloaded into the FH-U1 film holder. Toremove the cover, lift the tab at theend of the film holder (1).

Loading 35mm film strips

1

With the emulsion down, place the filmon the base of the holder. Align thefilm with the frame apertures.

Replace the cover. Slide the two pro-trusions on the left side of the coverinto the two slots in the base (2).Carefully lower the cover taking carenot to move the film. Snap the coverclosed by pressing the two pushmarks on each side of the tab (3).

11

Loading mounted slidesUp to four mounted 35mm or APS slides can be insert-ed into the slide mount holder. The slide mounts mustbe between 1 mm and 2 mm thick to fit the holder.Glass mounts cannot be used; the glass refracts thelight resulting in distorted and unevenly illuminatedscans.

Hold the slide mount holder so that the slots are to thetop and the frame numbers are upside-down and faceup. Insert the slides into the holder emulsion side down. Theslide must be parallel with the length of the holder otherwise the topand bottom of the image area will be cropped.

Loading a film holder into the scanner

2

3

Insert the film holder into the scanner in thedirection indicated by the arrow. Hold the hold-er straight and level when inserting it into thescanner.

Before using the scanner, install the DiMAGE Scan Utility; see the software instruction manual. With the front door closed, turn on the scanner and then start the computer. Launch the DiMAGEScan Utility before inserting the film holder. Do not insert the film holder into the scanner while theutility software is launching or the scanner is initializing; the indicator lamp blinks during this peri-od.

When the indicator lamp glows steadily, openthe front door until the top of the door isaligned with the 35mm film-holder mark.

1

Carefully push the holder into the scanner untilthe arrow mark (1) is aligned with the scannerdoor; the holder will be automatically fed intothe scanner from that point. Never touch or hin-der the holder when it is in the scanner.

LOADING THE FILM HOLDERS

12

Using the APS Adapter AD-10 (sold separately)APS (Advanced Photo System) cassette film can be scanned using the APS Adapter AD-10. Thecassette must contain processed film; the square number 4 mark at the end of the cassetteshould be highlighted in white. Do not load unprocessed film.

To load an APS cassette, slide the film-cham-ber release (1) toward the top of the adapterunit until the chamber door opens (2). Thefilm-chamber release will not return to its orig-inal position until the door is closed.

Insert the cassette into the film chamber asshown (3). Close the chamber door (4); thefilm-chamber release will return to its originalposition (5).

When the indicator lamp glows steadily, openthe front door until the top of the door isaligned with the APS film-holder mark.

With the scanner contacts face up, insert theadapter into the scanner until it stops. Thescanner detects the holder and automaticallyloads the film. Do not remove the holder untilthe film has been rewound, see page 13.

When using the APS adapter, if the scanner makes a strange sound or the film-advance warningappears, eject the APS adapter immediately (p. 13) and do not reinsert it. Contact a Minolta serv-ice facility.

Ejecting a film holderUse the eject button on the scanner body or inthe DiMAGE Scan Utility window to remove theholder; the scanner automatically ejects theholder to its initial insertion position. Do nottouch or hinder the holder while it is moving.

When using the optional APS Adapter, thescanner automatically rewinds the film whenthe eject button is pressed. Do not remove theadapter until the rewind motor has stopped.

Close the front door when the scanner is not inuse.

Film format and type settingsWhen scanning, the film type and format must be selected in the main window of the DiMAGEScan Utility. This scanner does not use glass holders and so the holder-type drop-down menu isdeselected. See scanner setup in the basic-scanning section of the software manual.

Two film formats can be selected with this scanner: 35 mm and APS. The APS option is for usewith cassette film with the optional APS adapter AD-10. If scanning APS film in slide mounts, usethe 35 mm film-format option.

Film type can be selected between color and black and white, positive and negative film. Film forprints is negative film. Slide film is positive film. APS has an additional option: auto-detect. Autodetect automatically sets the film type between color and black and white, and positive and nega-tive.

When making an index scan with the optional APS holder, the thumbnail frame numbers corre-spond to the film frame numbers.

On February 20th, 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. Onboard his Friendship 7 spacecraft was a Minolta Hi-matic camera to record that historicevent. The 4 hour, 55 minute, and 23 second flight orbited the Earth three times at an aver-age speed of 28,000 kph (17,500 mph).

Mr. Glenn visited our Sakai camera factory in Japan on May24th, 1963 to plant a palm tree to celebrate the occasion. Thepalm tree is still in the courtyard of the factory and stands overeight meters tall (26ft).

The camera? It was not lost. It is on display at the SmithsonianInstitution’s National Air and Space Museum inWashington D.C. This and other objects from JohnGlenn’s Friendship 7 Mercury flight can be found ingalley 210, “Apollo to the Moon.”
