Everythings bigger in America; weve got the biggest cars, thebiggest houses, and the biggest companies, the biggest food, and, finally, the biggest people. America has now become thefattest nation in the world. Congratulations. Nearly 100 millionAmericans are today either overweight or obese. Thats morethan 60% of all Since 1980 the total number of overweight andobese Americans has doubled, with twice as many overweightchildren and three times as many overweight adolescents. Thefattest state in America Mississippi -- where one in four peopleare obese. U.S. adults. I grew up in West Virginia, currently thethird-fattest state in America. When I was growing up, my mothercooked dinner every single day. Almost all my memories of herare in the kitchen. 19. And we never ate out, only on those few, rare special occasions.Today, families do it all the time, and theyre paying for it not onlywith their wallets, but with their waistlines. Obesity is now secondonly to smoking as a major cause of preventable death in America, with more than 400000 deaths per year associated with relatedillnesses. In 2002 a few Americans got fed up with being overweightand did what we do best. They sued the bastards. Taking aim at thefast-food companies and blaming them for their obesity andillnesses, a lawsuit was filed in New York on behalf of two teenagegirls, one who was 14 years old, 410", and 170 pounds; the other 19years old 56 and 270 pounds the unthinkable had suddenlybecome reality. People were suing the golden arches for sellingthem food that most of us know isnt good for you. To begin with yeteach day, one in four Americans visits a fast-food restaurant. 20. And this hunger for fast food isnt just in America. Its happeningon a global basis. McDonalds alone operates more than 30000joints in over100 countries on 6 continents and feeds more than46 million people worldwide every day. Thats more than theentire population of Spain. In the united states alone McDonaldsaccounts for 43 % of the total fast-food market.Theyreeverywhere walmarts, airports, rest stops, gas stations, trainstations, shopping malls, department stores, amusementparks, even hospitals. Thats right hospitals. At least youreclose when the coronary kicks in. Lawyers for McDonalds calledthe suits "frivolous, stating that the dangers of its food areuniversally known and that these kids cant show that theirweight problems and health woes were caused solely by theirmcdiets. 21. The judge states, however, that if lawyers for the teens can showthat mcdonalds intends for people to eat its food for every mealof every day and that doing so would be unreasonablydangerous, they may be able to state a claim. Are the foodcompanies solely to blame for this epidemic? Where doespersonal responsibility stop and corporate responsibility begin? Isfast food really that bad for you? I mean, what would happen if Iate nothing but McDonalds for 30 days straight? Would Isuddenly be on the fast track to becoming an obese American?Would it be unreasonably dangerous? Lets find out.
