E-LEARNING YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW
INTRODUCTION
Kids today have actually grown up with a mouse in their hands. They do not use the screen of a
computer or tablet for passive consumption, but are used to interact with the content and images
on the screen. Internet is playing a much bigger role in children’s lives today. Today, almost all
schools integrate electronic learning to one degree or another, although actual implementations
of e-learning vary widely from one school to another. As SA!T boards become standard in
classrooms, as students are able to interact with the Internet through a variety of channels from
their des"s through laptops, i#ods’, Smartphone, the hot electronic device of the wee". $-
learning is an affordable %and often free& solution which provides the learners with the ability tofit learning around their lifestyles, effectively allowing even the busiest person to further a career
and gain new 'ualifications. Some of the most important developments in education have
happened since the launch of the internet. These days’ learners are well versed in the use of smart
phones, te(t messaging and using the internet so participating in and running an online course
has become a simple affair. essage boards, social media and various other means of online
communication allow learners to "eep in touch and discuss course related matters, whilst
providing for a sense of community.
$-)$A!*I*+
uite simply, e-learning is electronic learning, and typically this means using a computer to
deliver part, or all of a course whether its in a school, part of our mandatory business training or
a full distance learning course.
$-learning, the integration of technology into the classroom augments students learning today in
a multitude of innovative, e(citing, challenging and sometimes controversial ways. In a broad
sense, e-learning includes all forms of education aided by technology including learning that is
completely independent of mediation to anything that involves any form of technology. The term

e)earning is really ust an umbrella term which covers a wide set of electronic educational
applications and processes such as /eb-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual
classrooms, and digital collaboration. It includes the delivery of content via networ", audio and
video recordings, satellite broadcast, interactive T0, and 12 !3 as well as many, many others.
E-Learning is Essential for Stuents
Technology has the power to transform education. It is essential to bring it into the classroom to
empower learning.
Students need to be engaged with what they are doing to improve learning outcomes 4
technology engages them. $nables students to become thin"ers5learners5ris" ta"ers in a sheltered environment.
)earn not to rely on the teacher6be accountable themselves6become independent.
0aluable employable s"ills in a digital world are learnt 4appropriate online behavior,
good digital citi7enship, cyber safety, plagiarism, wor"ing with virtual teams, self
discipline in a virtual world, digital and global entrepreneurship, globali7ation etc. 8roadens the hori7ons of many students as it e(poses students to the world outside their
city or country town. 9its in with !ural $ducation where students in small rural schools need no longer be
disadvantaged by distance and isolation, as technology allows them to learn virtually and
maintain their subect choices, allows eg )3T$ %languages other than $nglish& and other
specialist subects to be taught across schools by a virtual teacher. Allows a mobile learning environment 4 anywhere, anytime, anyhow.
Inspires students to see" more from school.
!eatures of E-Learning
)earning is self-paced and gives students a chance to speed up or slow down as
necessary )earning is self-directed, allowing students to choose content and tools
appropriate to their differing interests, needs, and s"ill levels.
Accommodates multiple learning styles using a variety of delivery methods geared to
different learners: more effective for certain learners.
2esigned around the learner.
+eographical barriers are eliminated, and allow a greater number of people to attend
classes.
3n-demand access means learning can happen precisely when needed.
Travel time and associated costs %par"ing, fuel, and vehicle maintenance& are reduced
or eliminated.

3verall student costs are fre'uently less %tuition, residence, food, child care&
#otentially lower costs for companies needing training, and for the providers.
9osters greater student interaction and collaboration.

A"antages of E-Learning
2iscreet
*ot everybody feels comfortable learning in a large group, especially if they find
something hard to understand that co-wor"ers have no problem with. $-learning
allows each individual to tac"le the subect at their own pace, with interactive tas"s being set in place to ensure a thorough understanding throughout each module.
+reater 1ollaboration
Technology tools ma"e collaboration among students much easier. Since many
proects involve collaborative learning, the online environment is far easier %and
often more comfortable& to wor" in since learners dont have to be face-to-face.
+lobal 3pportunities
The global learning community is at our fingertips with online learning. The
technologies used give online instructional designers the ability to build in tools that
ta"e us to resources we may never see in a traditional classroom.
1apacity and 1onsistency 4 ;sing e learning allows educators to achieve a great
degree of coverage for their target audience, and it ensures that the message is
communicated in a consistent fashion. This results in all learners receiving the same
training.
<igh )earning !etention 4 8lended learning approaches result in a higher "nowledge
retention rate. It also helps that coursewor" can be refreshed and updated whenever
needed.
Time and oney Savings 4 $ learning reduces time away from the wor"place,
eliminates the need for travel, and removes the need for classroom-based training.

9le(ible 4 ;sing e learning, can give employees and students the freedom to learn at
their own convenience, and at a pace that is right for them.
1onvenience and #ortability- 1ourses are accessible on our schedule 3nline learning
does not re'uire physical attendance )earning is self-paced %not too slow, not too
fast&.
#ersonali7ation - +ood learning systems adust to students’ personal progress as well
as strengths and wea"nesses, are available anytime, anywhere and are self-paced
which is very motivational and engaging for students.
Interactivity- 3ne of the maor obstacles to effective learning is passivity. $-learning
on the other hand offers numerous ways to engage students actively.
$ngagement= Technology can simulate real world e(periences with virtual tools li"e
multi-player simulations or role-plays. It enables students to practice real-life
scenarios in a secure setting which increases learners’ confidence.
obile 4 As e)earning can be done on laptops, tablets and phones 4 it is a very
mobile method. )earning can be done on the train, on a plane or any other time that
could normally be wasted. /hilst we used to be confined to the classroom, the whole
world can now be in our classroom.
*o Travel4 e)earning can be done wherever we have a device capable of doing so.
Therefore again we can fit it in to our schedule, but also save money on the costs of travel.
Technological #ossibilities 4 e-)earning is fast becoming a more and more popular
method and with it, so has the investment into how to improve it further. The
computer based nature of training means new technology is being introduced all the
time to help with the learning. 2ifferent apps are helping to further reinforce the
learning whilst forums can be used to greatly increase the amount of interaction and
engagement between learners. This is only going to improve as time goes on as well.
Disa"antages of E-Learning
Technology dependent- )earners will need access to a machine of minimum
specification as dictated by the e-learning supplier or access to a service with a high
bandwidth to transfer the course materials in a timely way.
8/19/2019 e Leaarning
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/e-leaarning 5/6
aterial Incompatibility- Some materials designed for one particular system will not
function properly on another %for e(ample, the Apple acintosh and the /indows #1&.
#oor internet connection and unavoidable general random faults also can interrupt
learning and so need to be planned around.
;nsuitable for 1ertain Types of )earners- $-learning re'uires a high-level of self-
discipline and personal time management. $-)earners need to be highly self-motivated
to ta"e full advantage of the medium as often the online learning e(perience can be
impersonal. /or"ing through pac"aged programmes can be irritating.
$(pensive- Start-up cost of an $-learning service is e(pensive and the cost of
production of online training materials is very high.
!eliant on <uman Support- $-learning is still dependent on help on either the course
materials or the software.
Too !eliant on IT S"ills- )earners may have limited IT s"ills, or be uncomfortable with
electronic communication and need to learn how to use the medium effectively.
#edagogically ;nsound- The electronic environment does not offer a pedagogically
enhancing learning environment.
)earning Approach 4 It doesn’t appeal to all learning styles so some learners will not
enoy the e(perience 4 especially strong activists and pragmatists. It is still a challenge
to ma"e e)earning appeal fully to these groups as different people learn better or worse
using different styles. Some may prefer images, some prefer ust reading words and
some prefer to tal" about or actually do a tas" in order to learn.
1omputer 1ompetency 4 Some employees might not be too comfortable using
computers, especially if their obs don’t re'uire them to.
CONCLUSION
$-)earning has revolutioni7ed the educational sector, and has changed the way we loo" at
"nowledge and s"ill ac'uisition altogether. $-)earning tools and techni'ues ust "eep getting

bigger and better. Today, they are providing learners with a more impressive, and more effective,
educational e(perience. 0ideo capture technology is one of the most essential tools a modern
classroom can incorporate, especially with the increasing popularity of e-learning. $ducation is
essential to helping the world progress, both technologically and socially. The digital age has
outpaced the traditional lecture and te(tboo" paradigm and people e(pect much more than boo"
learning, especially with the amount of information readily available on the internet and through
mobile devices. In the fast-paced world of e-learning the available technologies to ma"e a course
new and e(citing are always changing, and course content can and should be updated 'uic"ly to
give students the very latest information. 3verall, traditional learning is e(pensive, ta"es a long
time and the results can vary. The importance of $-learning is now a given fact and it can offer
an alternative that is much faster, cheaper and potentially better. $ducational technology is not
restricted to high technology and it has become an important part of society today, comprising an
e(tensive array of digiti7ation approaches, components and delivery methods. $ducational
technology includes numerous types of media that deliver te(t, audio, images, animation, and
streaming video, and includes technology applications and processes such as audio or video tape, satellite T0, 12-!3, and computer-based learning, as well as local intranet5e(tranet and web-
based learning..
