Sunday Scripture Speaks...October 18, 2020

What is my spiritual and social responsibility on this

Mission Sunday?

Responsibility is one’s ability to respond to the assigned task or

assignment. It is the measure of one’s commitment to achieving

the highest possible results with the given potential. Be it in one’s

personal life, family affairs, corporate works, responsibility is an

honored virtue, as it captures the essence of rendering what

ought to be done. It is one’s capacity to act by pondering, and truly knowing the

consequences of such action to reap the best fruits. What would your take be should

you ever be challenged as to what your priorities would be in fulfilling tasks that are for

your spiritual life versus your social responsibility? It is such moment when one has to

maintain and manifest ‘equilibrium’ to accomplish the tasks assigned. In today’s

gospel, the Pharisees asked Jesus, “Teacher, tell us your opinion: is it lawful to pay the

census tax to Caesar or not?” Knowing their intentions to plot and entrap, Jesus rightly

answered, “repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

We live in this world, firmly fixing our gaze on heaven. That’s it. No more questions

asked. Each year, the global passport index releases the list that mentions the strength

of each nation’s passport. The strength of a nation’s passport is measured in terms of

the number of countries an individual holding a particular passport can travel without a

visa requirement. As individuals, and more so as Catholic Christians, each of us not

only hold a passport of our citizenship and identity, but truly possess the citizenship of

Heaven. Through his response to the Pharisees, Jesus reiterates a dual responsibility:

to live and appreciate our earthly identity and citizenship, and to journey towards

Heaven, our ultimate Citizenship. On the other hand, we are challenged to duly carry

out our responsibilities and contribute our share to the society. Inspired by the

response of Jesus to the Pharisees, what is my spiritual and social responsibility as I

live my life and faith to spread the Mission of the Christ?

Now… can you give some of your time too? As little as 2 hours a month can make a big difference! If you are ready to commit your hands and hearts to this ministry, call us. We need help to organize and maintain our pantry stocks, as well as serve our brothers and sisters at the window and through home visits. Please consider joining the Society here at St. Peter’s. We welcome new faces to our ministry. If you have as little as 4 hours a month to help, we have a place for you! Contact us at 210-765-0157.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul at St Peter Prince of the Apostles Church is a special

ministry that turns your Green Bag donations into action in support of the poor!

"Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers or sisters of mine, you did for me." (Matt 25:31-46.)
