Big Data: Today
Motivation / Use Case
• Help people find a free parking lot
Implement an App which searchs a near
free lot and states also the route to it

MobiDAgg – Mobile Data Aggregation
Big Data: Today
Motivation / Use Case
• Help people find a free parking lot
Implement an App which searchs a near
free lot and states also the route to it
Infrastructure (Scenario 1)
Stationary sensors, central server
• Placed Sensors (f.i. cameras) sense
free parking-areas and send this information to a central server.
• The position-based query by a car-driver is sent to a server.
(State of the art)
High workload for the server. At peak times the server responses delayed
(Maybe our parking-lot is gone meanwhile)
Big Data Problem

MobiDAgg – Mobile Data Aggregation
Big Data: Meeting Internet of Things
Motivation / Use Case
• Help people find a free parking lot
Implement an App which searchs a near
free lot and states also the route to it
Infrastructure (Scenario 2)
Networked stationary sensors, no server
• Instead of sending a query to a server
ask the next sensor for free parking-lot.
• This sensor maybe asks neighboured sensors

Infrastructure (Scenario 3)
Networked stationary comm. devices,
cars are used as sensors
• Cars observe free parking-lots and send this information to the
next stationary communication device.
• Ask the next communication device for free parking-lots.
• These maybe ask neighboured communication devices.

• Whole Communication only between cars.
System without static infrastructure possible?

MobiDAgg – Mobile Data Aggregation
Bigger Picture
Distributed position-based aggregation of mobile data
• Networked System based on stationary sensors and mobile sensors (cars)
• Mobile querying nodes are searching for information about their local
environment (e.g. parking-lot)
Goal:
• Send correct, timely response to a query.
• Use as less as possible infrastructure (stat. sensor, stat. comm. devices).
• Use as less as possible memory, CPU-time and communication volume.

MobiDAgg – Mobile Data Aggregation
Tasks
• Investigate different variants for distributed, position-based
aggregation of „mobile“ data.
• Develop distributed Algorithms,
• Analyse correctness, communication volume and/or response time by
theoretical analysis and experimental evaluation.
For the experimental evaluation:
• Implement a simulation environment for our parking lot scenario
