New CHoR Pavilion and Parking

Deck on MCV Campus

Plans are in the works for construction of a new CHoR Pavilion to consolidate the majority of CHoR’s pediatric treatment and diagnostic areas currently spread through-out the MCV Campus into one facility. In addition to be-ing more convenient for families, having multiple physi-cians and services in one location will improve provision of care and care coordination. The new pavilion will house 72 clinical exam rooms organized for efficient multidisciplinary care; a surgical area with two operating rooms and two endoscopy procedure rooms; and areas for diagnostic cardiology, imaging, neurodiagnostic treatment, outpatient lab services and pulmonary function testing. The facility will be designed to create a child-and-family-friendly experience and will include a parking deck with 649 new spaces.

Katie Barber, CTRS, always welcomes patients and families to clinic with a bright smile—prom was no different!

Dr. Godder posed between serving cupcakes and bussing tables!

Inaugural Oncology Prom: A Red Carpet Affair

- Robyn Dillon, MSW, LCSW, C-ACYFSW Over 100 children and teens in the Richmond metro area spent much of the past school year enduring chemother-apy, clinic visits, transfusions, tests and scans. Living with childhood cancer disrupts the normalcy of going to school, playing sports, and even the ability to attend a spring dance or prom. This year was different for CHoR oncology patients! Over 30 children and teens with cancer attended the first an-nual CHoR Pediatric Oncology Prom. These children and teens would have otherwise missed out on such a rou-tine social event due to treatment. The inaugural oncology prom, a Red Carpet Affair, was held May 21 thanks to a generous grant from the MCVH Auxiliary and donations from a variety of community or-ganizations. The MCV Campus cafeteria was trans-formed for the evening with silver and gold stars, a disco ball and a red carpet entry. Patients, along with their friends and family, came decked out in festive attire, fancy dresses, and tuxedos. Attendees were offered the royal treatment with make up, hair styling, glittery tattoos, top hats and tiaras thanks to volunteer stylists from Nesbit and Hair Theatre. Prom participants were delighted to see the familiar faces of the prom wait staff — doctors, nurse practitioners and the psychologist! Music from DJ John Cox led to line dancing and grooving on the black and white checkered dance floor. Our paparazzi (Victoria Levi and Kecia Allen) captured priceless memories of the evening. With all the excitement, glitter, dancing, music and fun shared with family and friends, prom was a special occa-sion that will be remembered for years to come.

We weren’t kidding about the line dancing!

Prom attendees took a break from dancing to make picture frames to display favorite prom moments!

Matt Bitsko, PhD, a psychologist who began working at the clinic in 2006, said that dealing with the transition into can-cer treatment is one of his specialties. The patients are sometimes apprehensive to speak with someone about the disease they’re enduring.

He finds it helps to let patients know that when they are ready to speak to him he is there to listen.

Bitsko added that he understands that sometimes holding their feelings in is a source of strength for patients and how their individual therapy begins ultimately must be their choice.

“Kids and families teach us a lot,” said Bitsko. “What they need from us as providers, they also tell us where they want to go as an individual.”

Bitsko said that many forms of cancer have an 80 percent survival rate, which means the rate of survival is stacked in the patients’ favor.

The mission of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology is to serve the Commonwealth of Virginia as a nationally recognized entity of clinical, educational and re-search excellence.

The division is dedicated to improving the quality of chil-dren’s lives through prevention, control and cure of cancer and blood disorders. ChoR’s Pediatric Hematology and On-cology clinic is the only of its kind in central Virginia.

Cancer Patients’ Journey Captured

on Film - Matt Miller, Intern VCU Communications and Public Relations A private audience in the historic Byrd Theater was capti-vated and moved by a new film detailing an in-depth compilation of the experiences of 14 cancer patients from Children’s Hospital of Richmond’s (CHoR) Pediatric Hematology and Oncology clinic. “Dancing in the Rain” was produced by VCU kinetic im-aging student Keely Craig, who became involved in the film after hearing about the project, which she thought would be a good fit for her skills and interest.

“The people we interviewed were awesome and really inspiring—they are the coolest people ever,” said Craig. “I feel like I know them because I’ve sat in front of the footage for so many hours. They are really strong indi-viduals.”

Two clinic staff members, Robyn Dillon, a social worker, and Alma Morgan, an educational consultant, helped with the film’s production. Dillon said the video features pa-tients ages 13 to 34 in various stages of treatment, dis-ease and therapy. The video took nearly six months to complete. The documentary is intended to serve as a training tool for Children’s Hospital of Richmond and the community, but it is taking on a role for patients too.

“The mission of this video is a lot of different things,” Dillon said. “First we wanted to capture their perspective and how it impacted them, but also we wanted to use it as an educational tool for when we go to statewide con-ferences.”

“Additionally I’ve been fielding it to show newly diag-nosed children and their families: ‘this is what the experi-ence is really like.’ We can’t really know what it’s like—we just walk beside the folks along the way.”

Many of the cancer patients shown in the film attended the public premiere with family and friends.

“The film was breathtaking, because it brought back so many emotions—raw emotions,” said Oscar Holmes, an adjunct instructor in statistics and organizational behavior at VCU and a PhD student at the University of Ala-bama. “It was definitely all about where we connected together, and also we had gone through (treatment) so many years apart that a lot of us still had the same ex-periences.”
