President’s Message

Dear Members,

The upcoming IIA Canada National Conference (September 24-27) at the

Shaw Conference Centre will be the highlight event of the year. If you

have not done so already, I encourage you to register soon for this

outstanding event. This will be the first time this IIA Canada National

Conference will be held in Edmonton. If you are able, there is also an

opportunity to volunteer for the event with additional information included

in this newsletter.

Thanks to member commitment, the Edmonton chapter once again

achieved Sapphire Status for the 2016-2017 year – I am looking forward

to a great chapter year and continuation of the Sapphire Status.

The incoming board is committed to meeting the member needs for the

coming year. Only two changes for the board this year – Hoa Quach is

rejoining the board as VP Programs (co-chair) and Adra Upadhyaya is

joining as director at large. We want to thank outgoing board members

Sunny Kakar and Tricia Rowe for their contributions over the past year.

To avoid conflict with the monthly IIA webinars, we will be changing the

luncheon dates to Thursdays in the coming year. Due to the conference,

the first monthly luncheon will be scheduled for October 19th.

Hope to see many of you at the IIA conference as well as other events

that will be planned for the upcoming year. Please feel free to contact any

board member or me with any questions or suggestions for the chapter.

IIA National Conference – Call for volunteers

Dear Members:

We would like your support in identifying volunteers to help during the conference. This is a great way to

get engaged in the Chapter and participate in a rare opportunity. We hope you will be available to help

make this conference a success by showing our collective Edmonton hospitality to the conference

delegates.

The volunteer ask is a priority for our Chapter. We are not looking for hours upon hours of time but rather

use this as a way to get specific tasks completed during the conference and also help build our community

of internal auditors. A great way to meet others!

While many of you are assisting with Chapter activities, this is a great way to get involved in the near term.

The responsibility for organizing the volunteers for the National Conference rests with Cathy Ludwig. Cathy

is looking for individuals interested in assisting the Chapter with the IIA Canada National Conference.

The majority of volunteers will fill the role of room monitors, but we are also looking for assistance with the

registration desk and delegate kit and badge assembly. Room monitors attend presentations and are

mainly responsible to answer attendee questions, monitor and report any issues with equipment and

collect survey responses at the end. The main benefit to volunteers is that they get to observe the session

they are monitoring free of cost, as well as networking with members of the local internal audit community.

Please contact Cathy ([email protected]) if you are interested (or feel free to forward to your

colleagues), and she will reach out in the near future to determine how much time you are willing to commit

(even an hour or two is a big help), and which sessions you would prefer to attend.

Thank you and I hope you will join us as we showcase Edmonton to our fellow Canadian IIA practitioners.

Sincerely,

Alex Muchortow – Chapter President

Leslie Glasbeek – Co-Chair of the IIA National Conference in Edmonton

Canadians Score Top Marks in CIA Exams Globally

The Institute of Internal Auditors Canada is pleased to recognize the outstanding achievements of two

Canadian auditors who have demonstrated their depth of knowledge and commitment to excellence.

In the 2016 calendar year, 7,263 individuals successfully completed their CIA designation. Of those

who have been granted the CIA designation for 2017, two in particular stand out, and they are both

Canadians.

First, we are pleased to acknowledge Sarah Gray from the IIA Toronto Chapter. Ms. Gray is not only

the top scoring Canadian in the CIA exams, she is also the highest scoring candidate globally and

recipient of the William S. Smith Gold Medal Award. Both the Toronto Chapter and Ms. Gray have

much to be proud of for this rare accomplishment.

Second, we would like to recognize Maggie Lau from IIA Vancouver who has been awarded the Kurt

Riedener Bronze Medal Award. This is a global award of great prestige and recognizes the third highest

scoring candidate globally. This is a significant achievement in Ms. Lau’s career and we join with the IIA

Vancouver executive in congratulating her on her success.

“The CIA Designation is the mark of excellence in our field”, says John-Paul Cody-Cox, Executive

Director of IIA Canada. “We’re proud of both Ms. Gray and Ms. Lau for their outstanding

accomplishments and the recognition they have gained internationally.”

The Edmonton Chapter has partnered with Gleim CIA Review to ensure your success on the CIA exam!

Chapter Achievement Program

For the 2016/2017 Chapter Year, the Edmonton Chapter maintained its Sapphire status in the IIA’s

Chapter Achievement Program (CAP).

To qualify for recognition in the IIA’s CAP program, Chapters must earn specific minimum Chapter

Achievement points in the categories of:

Service to Members

Service to the Profession

Chapter Administration

Once the chapter has met or exceeded the minimum CAP Requirements in the three categories

(above), the chapter will have reached the BRONZE performance level. A chapter can advance to

SILVER or GOLD levels by accumulating specified point levels defined by the IIA across the categories

above. PLATINUM is a level recognizing chapters that attain GOLD status for 10 of 11 consecutive

years. A chapter will continue to be recognized as platinum level each year thereafter as long as it

reaches the Gold CAP level every year. There are three special levels above Platinum: Ruby

recognizing 10 consecutive years of Platinum; Sapphire recognizing 15 consecutive years of Platinum;

and Diamond recognizing 25 consecutive years of Platinum.

YOU support our Chapter Achievements! Please report on eligible activities.

The Edmonton Chapter receives Chapter Achievement Program (CAP) points for a variety of activities

including:

applicable non-compensated speaking engagements,

training sessions facilitated,

advocacy efforts at Post Secondary institutions,

articles submitted or published in the Internal Auditor magazine or other professional journals,

writing of exam questions accepted by the IIA, or even

volunteering by chapter members for things like the Junior Achievement Program.

We are asking all members to email us details of any activities that our members are carrying

out which may be eligible for acknowledgement in our quarterly Chapter Achievement reporting

to the IIA North America. Please send details of activities to our webmaster email address at

[email protected] or to the Chapter President at

[email protected].

Not sure if your activities qualify? Contact us as the email addresses above and we will be happy to

confirm if the activities may qualify. Please don’t hesitate to submit potential qualifying activities — we

want to fully report on and receive recognition for all eligible accomplishments of our Chapter

members!
