TODAY'! CAMI SUPER LEAGUE
TA YPORT v BATHGATE TIDSTLE
Last June you would have been given long odds for Bathgate and Tayport proppin g up
the Super League a mere four months later. After all, Bathgate had just won the Scot
tish Junior Cup and Tayport had finished a couple of places above them in the Super
League and had just added another Currie Cup to their haul of silverware .
A lot can happen in three months and the Canniepairt faithful don' t have to be re
minded of that with a third managerial team in place since, and a worst ever start to a
season behind them . Bathgate too , have had a disappointing time . After no doubt keenly anticipating the
draw for their first venture into the Scottish Cup and the chance of testing themselves
against Senior opponents , to draw Lochee United at Thomson Park must have been a
big let down . Going out of the ' big' Scottish at Lochee was bad enough but falling at the first hurdle
in defence of the Scottish Junior Cup four weeks later, beaten 3-2 at Irvine Meadow
after holding a two goal lead, was catastrophic.
This , then , is a big afternoon for both clubs. Tayport have Jim Moffat, this week ap
pointed as assistant to Willie Garner, in the technical area for the first time. Having
been involved in both two training sessions this week, Jim has got to know the players
and he and Willie are likely to have virtually a full pool from which to select. Sam
Morris and Stefan Elvin, both unavailable last week, are back in the squad but a knee
injury is likely to rule out Mike Gray . Internationalist Stephen Docherty , a key player in Thistle ' s Scottish Cup success , will
still be ruled out following a knee operation and skipper Graeme Love is still serving a
suspension for a double red v Forfar West End earlier this season. With a big squad
boosted by recent big money buys, Jim Lister (Berwick Rangers), Paul Riley and ex
Tayport star Chalkie Elliott , both signed from Bonnyrigg Rose, manager Willie Hill is
still spoiled for choice . Add the fire power of former Senior stars Paul McGrillen and
Brian McPhee ,the last named into double figures for the season already , Tayport have
their work cut out.

THIS AFfERNOON'S VISITORS BATHGATE THISTLE
After several false dawns , Bathgate Thistle finally came good last season when they
lifted the Scottish Junior Cup for the first time, with a 2-1 win over Cumnock at Rugby
Park, Kilmarnock. It was the fulfilment of manager William Hill's (pictured) dream,
cherished throughout his long association with the club, and vindicated his considerable
investment.
Stephen Menmuir and Paul McGrillen who netted the
goals in the final v Cumnock will be in the team today, as
will most of the others who collected winners medals.
Two missing, however will be the suspended Graeme
Love and the injured Stephen Docherty.
Cup win or not, Willie Hill wasn ' t going to rest on his
laurels and boosted his squad in the close season by sign
ing defender Gary Fallon, the former Albion Rovers and
East Stirling wide man Graeme McLaren from Carnelon and experienced former
Livingston, Airdrie and Hamilton Accies striker Brian McPhee from Dumbarton .
McPhee, McLaren and the former Motherwell and Falkirk striker McGrillen provide
the Creamery Park Jags with a pretty potent strike force.
Another McLaren, ex-Dundee United and Scotland player, Andy, might have been fac
ing us today but, after playing as a trialist for Thistle earlier in the season, he wasn 't
signed but instead put pen to paper for Irvine Meadow and played his part in Thistle ' s
exit from the Junior Cup at the first hurdle.
When the new Bonnyrigg manager placed experienced midfielder Paul Riley and John
Elliott on the transfer list, manager Hill brought them both to Creamery Park . Chalkie
Elliott, of course, is no stranger to the Canniepairt, having starred for us in 2003/04 .
Bathgate's latest recruit is striker Jim Lister from Berwick Rangers . Lister was a prolific
scorer for Carnelon last season and was signed for the wee Gers by former Mariners'
manager Alan McGonigle. When th.ings didn't work out for Lister at Shielfield ,
Camelon, Linlithgow and Bathgate were all credited with an interest but he plumped for
Bathgate, making his debut in the Scottish Cup defeat at Irvine. Lister didn't feature in
the defeat at Kelty last week, but is likely to return today. Another likely to be back in
the side this afternoon is keeper Andy Carlin who has shared this season's No . l j ersey
with Jordan Longrnuir . The error which cost the only goal of the game last week will
probably cost the youngster his place in the starting line up.
The New Management Team
Manager Willie Garner, supporters will recall, had a brief spell as assistant to Keith Burgess during the 2005/06 season. It's fair to say that Willie knows the set-up at Tayport from that period and is aware of the task which faces him and newly appointed assistant Jim Moffat.
Born in Stirling in 1955, Willie was a central defender with Aberdeen, having been signed from Campsie Black Watch. He played 180 games for the Dons during the reigns of Ally McLeod, Billy McNeill and Alex Ferguson in a period in which Aberdeen lifted the Premier League Championship and League Cup. A transfer to Celtic followed and subsequently a move to Alloa as player/manager , before returning to Aberdeen as assistant manager from 1984-1986.
There followed spells with Keith in the Highland League and later in the Juniors with Newtongrange Star as Willie carved a career outwith full time foot
ball. Football is always in the blood, however and there was a spell at Glenrothes and, after his short previous stint at the Canniepairt , Willie joined Jim Moffat as assistant manager at Forfar Athletic in 2007-2008 . Willie is senior sales manager with Scottish Widows, part of the Lloyds TSB Group, in Edinburgh where he lives with wife Diane .
Jim Moffat, who was born in Dunfermline in 1960 and brought up in Cowdenbeath, has been in professional football since signing for Manchester City aged 16. Since then, in a playing career lasting 25 years, Jim played in goal for Montrose, Hamilton, Dunfermline, Forfar Athletic , Brechin City, East Fife, Cowdenbeath , East Stirling, Albion Rovers and Stirling Albion. In the early part of his playing career, Jim was capped for Scotland at Professional Youth level. As his playing career drew to a close, Jim mixed playing with coaching at Cowden and Forfar and became assistant manager at Stirling Albion before a four year spell as manager of East Fife, from 2002 to 2006. During this period at Methil he led the Fifers to promotion into the 2nd Division.
Jim then took on the role of Head of Youth Development at Dunfermline Athletic prior to being appointed manager of Forfar Athletic for season 2007/2008. Jim is a SF A Goalkeeping Licence holder and, like Willie, is a SF A 'A' Licence holder. Jim is principal teacher of Physical Education at Bell Baxter HS in Cupar and lives with wife Anne and their three children in Kettlebridge

A WORD _FROM WILLIE
Today we welcome Bathgate to the Canniepairt on Super League business.
I am sure that neither of us are happy with our current league positions, which makes, I am sure, for an interesting afternoon.
With the resignations of both Sean and Fraser over the last couple of weeks, it left me with no backroom team against Camelon last week, which meant I had no input from the bench. I have moved quickly to rectify that situation, and have appointed Jim Moffat as my assistant , and can formally confirm Grant Paterson as part of my coaching team.
Jim brings with him a wealth of management and coaching experience and will provide fantastic support to me in team development . Grant will continue in his dual role as player /coach and his knowledge of the Junior game will prove invalu
able.
On last week's game, I did not feel as if there was much between the teams. We lost a crazy goal mid way through the first half, were lucky to avoid going two down in the first minute of the second half and then as the second half progressed
we got stronger and were unfortunate not to equalise .
Looking at the closeness of the majority of Super League results over the opening games of the season, it shows that there isn't much between all of the teams and any team that has a run of three or four victories depending where they are in the league at the time, would either move up the table substantially or open up a gap at the top. Our aim is to start putting together a run of results that firstly moves us away from our current position . Today's game is important to us, and I ask for your
continued support of the players .

BACK ON TRACK THIS AFfERNOON?
Tayport have a chance to get back on track this afternoon, when Bathgate Thistle come to town and three East Super League points are up for grabs .
Last week, 'Port left Carmuirs Park with nothing, despite a battling performance against hosts, Camelon. It was, however, only in the final third of the contest that the Canniepairt outfit looked like troubling the Lothians side.
By that stage, 'Port trailed to what was a poor goal to concede, scored in the 35th minute by Blair Batchelor. The Mariners did have a couple of other near misses during the encounter and would probably claim to have deserved their victory.
There was a more positive outcome a fortnight ago, when Tayport made it through to the third round of the Scottish Junior Cup, at the expense of Arbroath SC. Willie G1:ll11er's reign got off to a terrific start, with Reon Juskowiak bursting forward from midfield to net the opening goal, inside two minutes.
The slight disappointment was that the floodgates failed to open and ASC were able to notch a shock equaliser, on the stroke of half-time. In the second half, 'Port remained in control and soon edged back into the lead, albeit fortuitously. The Arbroath 'keeper stopped a Chris Webster free kick, but the ball cannoned back into the net, off a helpless defender.
Later, a Darren Scott penalty wrapped up the win and a further bonus was the return to competitive action of Ronnie Kenneth, who had been out injured for several months.
It now looks as though 'Port have a fully fit squad from which to choose and, after some unfortunate management upheaval this season, let's hope that the combination of Willie Garner and new assistant, Jim Moffat, will bring stability and that the club will now go from strength to strength.

SNIFFING ABOUT WITH THE SNOUT
Tayport fans were probably quite right to question why Adam O'Connor wasn ' t brought on earlier in last week's game at Camelon. The manager had _every intention of introducing Adam earlier .... but Adam couldn't find his No.8 jersey. Everyone hunted high and low for the elusive top, the number of which coincided with that on the ref's team list. It couldn't be found and eventually the situation was explained to the assistant referee and a different numbered jersey substituted for No.8 and with the ref's approval, Ad took the park. The mystery was resolved after the game when Camelon appeared with the missing top. Adam had taken it out before the game but had left it in the Camelon dugout amongst the Camelon bits and pieces and at the end had been gathered up with all the their gear!
Lochee United's website forum is still getting cluttered up with information on Tayport FC. Even their own fans are getting fed up with references to Tayport. The webmaster was chastised by a Lochee regular for yet another posting about 'Port. The webman responded by saying "it was only posted to keep you guys aware of what our rivals are up to!" Being the third most regular poster on the TFC site, the Lochee official seems to have a strange obsession with Tayport.
Scotland International boss Keith Burgess bas been very diplomatic in his squad selection for the Junior International team's outing this Sunday in a testimonial match at Auchinleck - eight players from the East Region and eight from the West Region have been selected. Lochee United have two players in the squad, Charlie Cargill and keeper lain Ross, and their former player, Calum Hardie, who moved to Pollok this season has impressed sufficiently with his new club to be included. Bathgate's Jim Lister, who has played only one game for today's visitors since his return to the Juniors from Berwick, has been included in the former Tayport boss's pool. Hill of Beath's Roger Duffin and Kelty's Tam Courts are also included as is Marc Graham who moved from Haws to Lithgae in July.
With Whyte & Mackay no longer sponsoring the East Super League and region bosses are feverishly trying to attract another sponsor. It won't be easy in the current climate.
