Barningham Flower & Produce Show - Scarecrow Trail

As much as we'd love to, we don't think it's the right time to organise a community picnic. In the last Flyer we'd mentioned that we'd wanted to do this instead of this year's Produce Show but unfortunately given the current restrictions and the current COVID-19 situation we don't think it's the right time to do this.

We'd still really like to see as many homemade scarecrows as possible in the 2020 theme in Barningham between 4 - 7 September 2020. Please join us in making and displaying them and enjoy having a look at everyone's creations! If you will be making one please let us know by emailing [email protected] or call or text Jill on 07793 112095 Barningham Flower and Produce Show Committee

John Crowther It was with great sadness that we heard of the recent passing of John Crowther. John moved to Newsham from Startforth and was one of the original Hallgarth Court residents. He founded and was Chairman of the Hallgarth Residents Association and also joined Newsham Parish Council as Parish Clerk, a role that he undertook diligently, supporting the Parish Council and the village residents. Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with his wife Pat and family.

Aaron Baker 1965 -2020 A great neighbour in Barningham and a true friend – sitting with him in our 'shack at the back' late into the night, or in front of the fire at Neil's, shooting the breeze about everything from family & friends, the village, work and holidays, to geopolitics, economics and international human rights. He was patient, pragmatic, humorous and generous. I know it's nothing like the bereavement that Kris, Callum and Ellie are facing, but I will miss him an awful lot. Au revoir mon ami... by Nat Ridgeway Aaron was an internationally recognised scholar specialising in employment law and taught at Durham University for nearly 20 years. Originally from the US, with a BA in political science from St Louis University, followed by graduating at the top of his class at St Louis University School of Law, his early career was as an employment lawyer representing both employers and employees in disability, race, gender and age discrimination cases. He came to the UK to read for a Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford University in 2000. After a year at Plymouth University, he was appointed lecturer in law at Durham University in 2002, being promoted to senior lecturer in 2006 and an Associate Professor (Reader) since 2011. His teaching was popular with students and his employment law module among the most popular options offered. He built up an impressive body of research, publishing articles in several top law journals, together with writings on dispute resolution and anti-discrimination law and a textbook on employment law. by Colleagues

A cutting… If I didn’t have my scissors, I would starve.

I’ve got to have the food on my plate so I can carve. With knife, fork and spoon, I’ll manage to eat

But to get the food from the package has me beat. With my hands I grip it, it doesn’t tear.

My plate remains bare. Thumb and fingernails bent In the package still no rent.

With my teeth I get hold and pull The package remains unopened and full.

Best-before time and date Looks like it will just have to wait.

Until this package is open Hopefully I will carve then.

In my desperation I give the package a close examination.

I see a line of dots and a profile of scissors. So now when I say grace and thank you Lord

For the food that you give us Please bless the man who invented the scissors.

NEWSHAM VILLAGE HALL VIRTUAL MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING - FRI 25 SEP We are all very disappointed that we cannot hold our fabulous Macmillan Coffee Morning this year, but we don’t want this to stop us raising much needed funds for this fantastic charity that supports so many people. In this month’s Flyer, Newsham residents will find an envelope for any spare change which you would like to donate to Macmillan - no matter how small. Donations can then be posted through the letter boxes of any of the Committee Members. Their addresses will be printed on the envelopes. We welcome residents from neighbouring villages to join our Virtual Macmillan Coffee Morning fundraising this year. If you aren’t able to get the envelopes to us, or don’t receive one (as you don’t live in Newsham) please call Louise - 621988, Rose - 621300 or Val - 621019 or message our Facebook page. All donations will be forwarded on to Macmillan, as we do each year. Remember, we would still love to see any delicious cakes you might bake, so please post your photos onto our Facebook page. We are all looking forward to next year when we can, hopefully, hold a real Macmillan coffee morning, complete with show-stopping cakes and our famous raffle.

Aaron Kris, Callum and Ellie would like to thank all our friends and neighbours for their kindness and support after the sudden passing of Aaron. Your kind gestures, cards and offers of help have meant so much to us during this difficult time, especially as we are not able to have family around due to the current Covid situation. Once the situation allows, we will have a celebration of Aaron’s life for which we hope you will all join us. DALTON & GAYLES YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION Hello everyone from the Dalton & Gayles Yorkshire Countrywomen. Firstly, we hope you are all safe and well. We have sadly decided with the best interests of our members to cancel all our meetings until Christmas. We will then review the situation at that time and hopefully start our meetings again. However, if any of you would like to meet up for a cup of tea or coffee, we will be at Stoneygate Farm Shop and café in Ravensworth on Wednesday 9 September at 10am. If you require transport we can arrange to pick you up and take you home if you are willing to travel in a car. The café has seating in a barn which is open on one side but covered and seating is spread out. We miss you all, so if you would like have a natter we would love to hear from you. Please contact Anne or Janet re transport and so we can let Stoneygate know.

Work continues at the hall aimed at refurbishing the interior and upgrading the facilities. The recently completed new toilet area, funded by the National Lottery for All, Community Fund, is modern, clean and offers disabled access: pictures following the course of the project are available on the Ravensworth Village Website, at https://ravensworthvillage.wixsite.com/website Replacement of the ageing metal windows in the toilet area by wooden, double glazed ones is due to take place shortly. Financial assistance, provided by a successful grant application to the RDC Community Investment Fund, means that the plan to remove the existing kitchen and replace it with a brand new one can be completed this Autumn. Prior to this the Hall ceiling will be repaired allowing the installation of new dimmable LED lighting and the walls will be replastered. We look forward to being able to safely welcome our community back into their Hall to enjoy the new facilities as soon as possible. Finally, in light of the above, the Parish Council has agreed to update and simplify the Hire Rates for the full use of the Village Hall. The new rates are:
