Section 6 - Food scraps recycling
Don’t waste your food scraps – turn them into compost by choosing the system that works best for you.
The options are:
Use your organics bin
You can recycle your food scraps by placing them directly in the bin, wrapping them in newspaper and placing them in the bin, or placing them in a kitchen caddy lined with a compostable bag which, when full, is placed in the bin.
Use the voucher in the ‘Four easy ways to recycle your food scraps’ booklet available from Council for:
A kitchen caddy with roll of compostable bags (available free from Council). •
A rebate of up to $20 on a new kitchen caddy and a roll of compostable bags purchased privately. •
Rolls of compostable bags can be purchased from Council.
Compost at home
You can recycle your food scraps for your own use by placing them in a compost bin, worm farm or other home compost system.
Use the voucher in the ‘Four easy ways to recycle your food scraps’ booklet available from Council for:
A rebate of 50 per cent (up to $50) on a new compost bin, purchased through Council or privately. •
A rebate of 50 per cent (up to $50) on a new worm farm, purchased through Council or privately. •
The food waste recycling voucher offer is limited to one offer per household while stocks and funds last.

Collected: fortnightly on the days marked in green on the calendar.

Do not put materials in plastic bags or •

No soil, rocks, stones, bricks, plant pots, •
garden tools or other inorganic items.
Remember the rule: ‘If it didn’t grow, it •
doesn’t go in your organics bin.’
If you don’t have grass or garden •
prunings to dispose of with your food scraps, wrap your scraps in newspaper. The paper will absorb moisture and prevent the food from sticking to the bin.

Recycling tips
Remove all lids from jars, bottles and plastic containers •
before putting containers in the bin.Rinse containers as necessary - save water, use leftover dishwater. •
Place all recyclables loose in the bin. •
Keep recyclables of different materials separate from one •
another e.g. do not place cans in boxes.Rigid plastic items such as lids can be collected in a plastic •
fabric softener or detergent bottle and, once full, placed in the recycling bin with the lid on.A steel lid can be placed inside a steel can and the top •
squeezed shut to prevent it falling out.

What goes in the waste bin?
Items of general household waste that cannot be put in your recycling or organics bin. This includes:
plastic bags, garbage bags, cling film, non-recyclable plastic and plastic food packaging e.g. chip packets •
nappies •
lids (plastic and metal) •
kitty litter (wrapped) •
small broken household items e.g. crockery, heatproof glass and glassware (wrapped) •
rags and clothing •
expanded polystyrene foam packaging (including food trays and cups) •
ropes, hoses and strapping •
smoke alarms •

WRONG Bins overfull
To ensure your bins are emptied on your scheduled collection day, you need to:
Put the bins out by 6am on the collection day and bring them back in within 24 hours of collection •
Face each bin towards the road – wheels towards your property •
Follow the correct bin placement shown above •
Place the right material in the right bin •
Ensure your bin is not packed too tightly and does not exceed 50 kg in weight •
Ensure that the lid is fully closed. •

Damage to a bin •
New bins if there are none at the property when you move in. •
Missing Bin Reports
All bins are the property of Council and should not be removed if you relocate or sell your home.

Correct Bin Placement
Where practical, keep a minimum distance of 30cm between bins, and 1 metre between bins and surrounding objects such as parked cars, poles, trees and letterboxes, with plenty of clearance from overhead branches.
