Internships: Internships (paid or unpaid) are a great way to gain experience and knowledge in a certain field, and a good way to test out whether you would be interested in a lifelong career in that field.

Volunteering: Volunteer opportunities are unpaid positions that can increase experience in a variety of employment settings. While unpaid, volunteer positions can be more flexible than an internship, and another good way to build your resume and see if you like working in that field.
