EAA Chapter 279 Monthly Newsletter March 2017 Hello Everyone, As I pen this note, we’re back in the cold air mass. Groundhog be damned! It’s good for flying, but not so nice for backyard BBQ’s or bon-fires. Despite the resurgence of winter, the span of warm days had Alton Bay closed almost as soon as it opened. For good reason. The uneven puddling of water on the runway made it somewhat difficult for light planes to lift off. Saw an RV-6a go upside-down during the Alton Bay winterfest a few weeks back. The builder/pilot was from New Jersey. They are fine. Shaken, but not stirred. If I had to bet, I’d say (at worst) a 709 ride is in his future. Late last month, a local flying community lost pilot and former mayor of Newburyport, Al Lavender. Al, the only soul on board in his Sonex, died in a crash on 28 Feb on the approach end of a runway in Lawrence, MA. Though I don’t think that many at 279 knew Al personally, I can surely say that our hearts and thoughts are with Chapter 106, and Al’s family. We all feel it when we lose a kindred soul. Rest in peace Al. Our Sonex build is progressing. The left wing’s flap has been completed. We completed some of the wiring for the landing, wing-tip strobe, and marker lights. A nice job by Greg and Gerry on the aircraft lighting work. What remains is drilling out the holes for mating the spars in the wing-spar box of the fuselage. Once that’s done, we’ll put the leading edge on, rivet ‘er up and then we’ll complete the wing-tip. I was hoping we’d be done with that wing by now as it’s been a year! Let’s get started on the right wing. We still have an Aileron and Flap that can be built separate so we don’t exactly need the left wing cradled to get started. Fly-in breakfasts begin next month. Let’s hope for fair winds and clear skies! That is all. Hello Everyone,

As I pen this note, we’re back in the cold air mass. Groundhog be damned! It’s good for flying, but not so nice for backyard BBQ’s or bon-fires.

Despite the resurgence of winter, the span of warm days had Alton Bay closed almostas soon as it opened.

What remains is drilling outthe holes for mating the spars in the wing-spar box of the fuselage. Once that’s done, we’ll put the leading edge on, rivet ‘er up and then we’ll complete the wing-tip. I washoping we’d be done with that wing by now as it’s been a year!

Let’s get started on the right wing. We still have an Aileron and Flap that can be builtseparate so we don’t exactly need the left wing cradled to get started.

Fly-in breakfasts begin next month. Let’s hope for fair winds and clear skies!

That is all.

Check out the Sonex project at http://www.mykitlog.com/EAA279 .

Minutes of the February 12, 2017 meeting 7 members present

Unfortunately due to extreme weather, and very low attendance (7 members), there are no significant motions nor minutes to report. It is known however, that the President and Secretary were not present.

DUES ARE DUE. Please save us from having to remind anyone. Thank you.

Just a friendly reminder that this time of yearwhen it gets above freezing, some areas of

Cranland get extra soggy and driving vehicleson them can leave deep ruts. Please try not to

drive vehicles on the grass unnecessarily.

First Fly-in of the season is only 5 weeks away!!!

I don't know about you but your humble editor is really looking forward to it.
