Dear 7th Grade Parent or Guardian,
On Wednesday, January 15, 2014, the University of Wisconsin Marathon County
Continuing Education, the Wausau Department of Public Instruction and Horace
Mann Middle School will host a “Think College Day” for the ENTIRE seventh
grade class (280 students). This opportunity will allow students, at an early stage in
the educational journey, to have a hands-on introduction to “college” not typically
found in an everyday classroom setting.
Students will attend informational sessions on college readiness as well as the appli-
cation process. They will tour a typical college setting and participate in fun games
such as College Jeopardy and interact with a college student panel. Additionally, all
students will attend college classes such as Math, Science and computer-related
fields.
Recently, the ACT website featured an article entitled, “The Forgotten Middle: En-
suring That All Students Are on Target for College and Career Readiness before
High School.” It was reported that fewer than two in ten eighth graders are on tar-
get to be ready for college-level work by the time that they graduate from high
school. In today’s competitive marketplace, it is more important than ever to pre-
pare and expose children to a college-like setting at an earlier age. Our goal for this
program is to increase their knowledge on the college experience and perhaps stir
the desire to attend some form of secondary education.
This college visit will provide the idea and opportunity that every student does indeed
have the chance to continue his or her education beyond high school. Additionally, it will
provide each student with information to make college a reality. For many students,
this will be their first “college” experience. This project would not have been possi-
ble without generous grants from the Greenheck Foundation as well as the state-of-
art facilities and staff members of the University of Wisconsin Marathon County.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Julie Bollmann, Parent Partner-
ship Coordinator at (715)261-0725, extension 22115, or at
Sincerely
Mark Beversdorf Joe Pachal

Dear Horace Mann families,
Happy New Year! Now that 2014 is upon us, please know that all of us here at
Horace Mann have renewed our commitment to your children. Together, we can live
our vision, Student Learning – Whatever It Takes! This second semester
means the home stretch of yet another school year, and we want to ensure that all
of our days continue to be filled with safety, respect, and responsibility. Thank you for
supporting your children, their education, and our school. We could not do any of
this without you!
Best wishes for a healthy, happy year!

Parents: An Important Reminder About
Messages for Students
Our goal is to preserve the learning environment here
at Horace Mann. We are asking that you try to remind
your child of any appointments or how they are getting
home after school before they come to school. If it is an
emergency, please call the Main Office, and we will get
the message to your student. Otherwise, if the message
can wait, we ask that it wait; including forgotten items.
We want to limit the number of interruptions in the
classroom so we can focus on learning. Thank you!
To ensure that we have accurate contact
information on file for every student, please
contact Shannon Keough in the Counseling
office at 715-261-0740 or
[email protected] with any
contact information changes.

Horace Mann students have used the months of November and December to learn, practice and refresh assembly and hallway behaviors.
Targeted behaviors for assemblies included demonstrating appropriate voice volume, body language and verbal and nonverbal responses before,
during and after an assembly. Students were able to practice these skills both on and off site, which led to additional conversations about
appropriate dress and the importance of representing Horace Mann well. The PBIS Committee is proud of the work done by staff and the
response shown by students. While everyone is looking forward to the winter break, PBIS will be in full force after the holidays.
We continue to look for new ways to acknowledge and reward the positive behavioral gains made by the students. We appreciate the donations
that have been provided from various individuals, groups and organizations throughout the community and graciously accept any new. If you have
a connection to a group or organization that is able to provide donations that can be used in our school-wide celebrations we would love to hear
from you! Previous donations include small gift cards or coupons to local restaurants such as Culver’s, Subway or McDonalds, free or
discounted admissions to sporting or theatre events and various sizes in apparel that promotes local schools or teams.
For more information on the philosophy, practices and policies of PBIS at Horace Mann, please go to the Horace Mann website
(www.wauschools.org/horacemann) and look for the PBIS link.
Building Security
Starting with the 2013-2014 school
year, Horace Mann will be initiating a
new practice for visitors to the
building. All exterior doors in the
building will be locked between the
hours of 7:50 am and 2:50 pm
Monday through Friday. The focus of
this practice is to add another layer of
security to our building.
A security camera has been installed
at the front atrium of the building.
Visitors to the building will be able to
communicate with office staff via the
camera and intercom. Office staff will
have the ability to remotely unlock the
front door, temporarily, for visitors.
Once inside the building, visitors will
be asked to report to the main office
to sign in.
Mr. Joe Pachal was
nominated to receive the
Board Resolution of
Commendation Award.
This award recognizes
the accomplishment of
Mr. Pachal receiving the
2013 Distinguished
Teacher Award from the
National Council for
Geographic Education.
Mr. Jon Rossmiller was the recipient of the Innovative
Educator Grand offered through Wisconsin Public Service
Foundation. Horace Mann was selected and will receive
$1,000 to fund Stream Monitoring Materials.
Forensics is underway. Students
participating this year in forensics will
travel to our first meet held at DC
Everest Middle School on Tuesday,
February 4, at 4:00 and will get over
around 6:00. Our second meet will be
held at Mosinee Middle School on
Thursday, February 20, at 4:00 and get
over around 6:00 also. Parents and
family members are welcome to
attend. Please arrange for pick up at

The Winter Concert season is here! Please take note (pun implied!): 6th Grade: January 21 Music Concert All concerts start at 7 pm and students should plan on arriving at 6:40. We ask that our musicians “dress up” i.e. no denim or shirts with words on them. Ladies in dresses/skirts and Gentlemen in ties are great! A musical tidbit… The study of music helps students achieve SUCCESS IN SOCIETY. The U.S. Department of Education recommends the arts as subjects that college-bound students should take. “Many colleges view participation in the arts as a valuable experience that broadens students’ understanding and appreciation of the worlds around them. It is well known and widely recognized that the arts contribute significantly to children’s intellectual development.” One year of Visual and Performing Arts is recommended for college-bound high school students.
-Getting Ready for College Early: A Handbook for Parents of Students in the Middle and Junior High School Years, U.S. Department of Education, 1997.
January is the start of the winter outdoor season for our Physical Education classes at Horace
Mann. Most students will be on a rotation, where they will start to get involved with winter outdoor
games, snow shoeing and cross country skiing. Please remind your child to dress appropriate for
the outdoor conditions. Some kind of winter boot is recommended. Appropriate clothes will ensure
that your child can focus on the fun at hand and have a positive experience.
Please remind your child to take their gym clothes home on a regular basis for laundry purposes.
Now is a good time to clean out that gym locker and take home any extra clothes that have
accumulated over the course of the 1st semester. Be aware that changing for gym class into clothing
that is more appropriate for activity, continues to be a priority for our department. Students who
have the required clothing for class tend to be more engaged in the activity and also fit in with the
rest of the student body more easily. Your encouragement at home in this area is much
appreciated.
We hope the first half of the school year was an exciting and memorable time for your child and
hope the remainder of the school year brings new challenges and opportunities that help to build
excitement and confidence in your child’s life.
Are you struggling with Math? Do you need help with grammar? Are you
working on a project? If you need help with homework, come to your FUN, FREE Homework Help class. Attend your team’s class today and get the help
to reach your academic goals and have FUN! Pick up a permission slip on the Study Zone’s bulletin board to attend.

Attention 7th and 8th grade students: VARIETY SHOW Auditions are coming soon!
Auditions for the Variety Show will be in January on Monday, January 20th and Tuesday, Janu-ary 21st. They will be held in the Choir Room 51. They will begin immediately after school and run until 5:00 p.m. respectively. Students will sign up for a number that will give them an order for their audition. Each student or group should have their own music or have the youtube site memorized to find easily on the internet. All songs should be sung independently of an artist but the karoke background music is encouraged. A microphone, piano, computer, and cd player are available for use if needed for the audition. We are accepting only memorized songs or dance routines, comedy, or anything that will make the Horace Mann Variety Show unique. There will be a panel of judges with confidential notes who will decide the end re-sults. Results will be posted before Friday of the same week! Good Luck! The Variety Show "Life Is A Highway" will be performed two nights at Wausau East on March 20th and 21st. Good Luck to everyone involved!
Check It Out: News from the Horace Mann Informational Media Center (IMC)
Welcome to the year 2014! In the next newsletter I hope to be able to announce the Best Books for Children and Young Adults from the American Library Association Awards! I really do enjoy seeing all our students reading and sharing their experiences with one another and me, as well.
Reminder: Students can access the Horace Mann IMC catalog from home. Go to the Horace Mann Homepage, find the link to “Instructional Media Center—IMC”. Once there you will find a link to our on-line card catalog.
Just a few reminders about the Horace Mann IMC procedures:
1. The IMC is open at 7:30am until 3:30 pm. After school hours may vary depending on the meetings our staff has to attend. A sign will be posted if this does happen so students can note the schedule change.
2. Books and magazines may be checked out for 2 weeks. They may be renewed one time af-ter the due date depending on whether there are holds placed on the item.
3. Reference materials may be checked out for one week.
All items checked out from the IMC have date due slips or a stamp so students know when to return materials.
We do not place fines on overdue materials; however, students may not check other items out until their overdue item(s) has been returned.
If library material is lost or damaged while checked out to a student, that student will be re-sponsible for paying for a replacement copy or for comparable material for our collection. We sometimes charge a repair fee of $3 if the item is heavily damaged but salvageable.
Please, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child's IMC usage, I will be glad to discuss the matter with you. (Mrs. Engel # 261-0728)
Homework Help from the IMC Databases
There are several on-line resources students can use while doing research for school projects and homework.
These databases are not only available on the IMC computers; they can be accessed from home and other
computers which are hooked up to the Internet. Here is a list of resources your students can use outside of
school to help with their homework. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns in
regards to the following on-line resources.
