Description
Case
The Eagle has a plastic case with a fu ll-sized hand le. The h igh-
visibility case is shielded to reduce radio frequency and
electrom agnetic interference (RFI/ EMI). The system is light-w eight
and balanced, wh ich m akes the Eagle easy to carry an d u se forextended periods. A foam ru bber gasket between the top and bottom
case components is w ater- and dust-resistant. You can set the case into
2.5 in. of w ater withou t damage.
Control Panel
The control panel is at the top of the Eagle. The touch-pad bu ttons
redu ce the risk of accidental activation. The dot matrix display
simultaneously show s the gas read ing for all installed sensors. (For
the 5- and 6-gas versions, the Eagle d isplays the gas read ing of four
channels. Use the AIR/ and SHIFT/buttons to scroll to the non-d isplayed channels.) The d isplay also show s inform ation for each of
the Eagles program m odes.
Buttons
The control panel includes the following six buttons.

Alarm Lights
Two u ltra-bright, red , light-emitting d iodes (LEDs) provide visual
alarms for gas concentrations and malfunctions. They are mounted on
the top rear of the case for greatest visibility.
Battery Charger Connector
The battery charger connector is mounted on the top right rear of the
case. The external battery charger connects to this connector torecharge nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries. The continu ous operation
adap ter also connects to the battery charger connector.
Interface Port
The interface port is for the optional data logging or remote buzzer.
The port is mou nted on the top left rear of the case. When the Data
Logging op tion is installed , the Eagle records gas concentrations at
program med intervals and stores data on gas detected. You can
down load these measurem ents through the interface port to a PC-
compatible compu ter for use in data analysis program s. Data retrieval
requires the Eagle Data Dow nloader Kit (with PC connection cable
and software).
The optional remote bu zzer also connects to the interface por t. The
remote buzzer is for use in app lications w here a remote alarm
indication is required.
Buzzer
A solid -state electronic buzzer is mou nted inside the top of the case.
The buzzer sou nd s for gas alarms, malfunction, low battery voltage, and as an ind icator dur ing use of the Eagles man y d isplay and
adjustment op tions.
Sample-Drawing System
The samp le-draw ing system includes the pu mp , sensor block and
connections, internal filter and charcoal scrubber, and the external
hose, probe, and hydroph obic filter. This system provides continuous
flow of samp led air to the sensors w hile keeping ou t liqu ids and dust.
With p roper setup , the system can d raw a samp le flow from up to 100
feet aw ay from the Eagle. Consu lt RKI Instru ments, Inc., for sam ple

Eagle Instruction Manual Description 7
Sensors
This section d escribes the Eagles stand ard sensors. Non -stand ard
sensors are described in Append ices C, D, and E. Your specific Eagle
model may not include all of the sensors described below. Under
norm al cond itions, the Eagles standard sensors have an op erating life
of approximately two years.
Combustible gas sensorThe combustible gas (LEL) sensor is mounted with the flam e arrestor
down in the sensor block to allow th e samp le flow to diffuse into the
sensor. Five pins extend from the top of the sensor. The sensor cable
connects to the pins on one end and terminates in a four-position
connector, which plugs into the COMB socket on the analog pr int
circuit board (PCB).
The LEL sensor d etects combustible gas and vap ors in the atmosph ere
with a catalytic p latinu m element. The reaction of gas with oxygen on
the catalyst causes a change in the resistance of the element, which isconverted by the Eagle into a read ing of combustible gas
concentration.
Oxygen sensor
The oxygen (O2) sensor is mounted face dow n in the sensor block to
allow the sam ple flow to d iffuse into the sensor. A multi-pin p lug
connects the O2 sensor to the CN2 socket on the analog PCB.
The O2 sensor is an electrochem ical cell, wh ich reacts to the oxygen in
the atmosph ere and prod uces a voltage proportional to the oxygenconcentration. This voltage is converted by the Eagle into a reading of
oxygen concentration.
Standard toxics (CO and H2S) sensors
The CO and H 2S sensor s are physically very sim ilar. They have
cylind rical bodies and are mou nted face dow n in the sensor block. A
three-position connector from each sensor p lugs into EC1 or EC2
socket on the analog PCB. The sensor connected to the EC1 socket
d isplays as chan nel 3; the sensor connected to the EC2 socket d isplays
as channel 4.
The toxics sensors are electrochemical cells, which react to th e target
gas in the atmosph ere, producing a cur rent prop ortional to the
concentration of gas. The current is converted by the Eagle into a
reading of target gas concentration.

the information collected.
The analog PCB is moun ted p erpend icular to the base of the
instrum ent case. It is located in the same half of the case as the sensors
and sample-drawing system. The sensor leads connect to the analog
PCB.The main PCB is mounted in the top half of the case. It includes the
methane elimination and CAL/ SETUP switches.
CAUTION:The circuit boards should be serviced only by authorized repair
personnel.
Methane Elimination Switch
The methane elimination switch (SW1) is mounted near the top right
corner of the m ain PCB.
For app lications w here methane is an interfering gas, you can set the
methane elimination switch to eliminate most response to methane
(see App end ix B: Methane Elimination on p age 52). An external
methane elimination sw itch is available as an option.
CAL/SETUP Switch
The CAL/ SETUP switch (SW2) is mounted near the midd le left edge
of the main PCB.
This switch controls the Eagle functions ava ilable to the user by
d isabling the SHIFT/button. Without the use of this bu tton, the user
is unable to enter Calibration or Setup mode. (Display mode is

based on Eagles in fu ll response mod e (methane elimination switch
set to CH4) calibrated to methane. Multiply the display read ing by the
factor in the ap propriate colum n in the table. For example, if you are
detecting hexane an d the d isplay reads 10% LEL, the actual hexane
read ing is 10% x 2.55 = 26% LEL hexane.
WARNING: The Eagles alarms are init iat ed by the DISPLAY reading
not the FACTORED reading. If you are monit oring forhexane as in the example below and the low alarm is set
for 10% LEL, the Eagle w ill init iat e a low alarm at 26%
LEL hexane (display reading of 10% LEL).
To determine the concentration of other combustible gases with th e
Eagle in m ethane elimination mod e, see Table 7 on page 53.

Eagle Instruction Manual Calibration 41
Calibration
Calibrate the Eagle when you replace a sensor. Also calibrate th e Eagle
periodically to assure prop er sensor response.
You can program the Eagle to notify you w hen it is due for calibration
(see Upd ating the Time Calibration Setting on p age 38). The
frequency of calibration d epend s up on the am oun t and type of use. Atyp ical calibration frequency is once per m onth .
Calibration Supplies and Equipment
To calibrate the Eagle, you need :
Known calibrating samples of combustible and the appropriate
toxic gases. The sam ples shou ld h ave concentrations in
approximately the midd le of the range of detection.
An oxygen-free source, such as 100% nitrogen or CO in a nitrogen
balance
A demand -flow regulator to provide adequate samp le gas flow
For one-source, au to-calibration, you can use the RKI Four-Gas
Cylind er to ad just all the sensors at the same time, autom atically, with
no n eed for a zero-oxygen sou rce. This section includes instru ctions
for calibration w ith the deman d-flow regu lator and RKI Four-Gas
Cylind er. This section also includes inst ructions for calibra tion w ith
individual gas sources.
Preparing for Calibration1. Take the Eagle to a non-hazardous location w ith fresh-air
conditions.
2. Turn on the Eagle and allow one minute for warm u p.
3. Press and hold the AIR/ button u ntil a tone soun ds.
The Eagle au tomatically sets the combu stible gas an d toxics
circuits to zero and the oxygen circuit to 20.9%.
4. Screw the regulator to the calibration cylinder.
5. Connect the calibration tubing to the regulator.

Calibrating the Eagle
Press and hold the SHIFT/button, then press the DISP/ ADJ bu tton.
The Calibration menu d isplays.
NOTE: The following screens illustrate a four-gas Eagle with the d ata
logging op tion and are intended as examp les only. Your Eagle
may d isplay slightly d ifferent screens.
The Eagles Calibration m enu includes two method s of calibration:
Auto Calibration an d Single Calibration.
Auto Calibration: This method allow s you to calibrate all four
sensors simu ltaneously. It is designed for use w ith the RKI Four-
Gas Calibration Cylind er and is the qu ickest and easiest method tocalibra te the Eagle.
Single Calibration: This method allows you to calibrate one sensor
at a time. Use this method if you are only calibrating one or tw o
sensors, if you are calibrating non-stand ard toxic sensors, or if you
are not u sing the RKI Four-Gas Calibration Cylind er.
Calibrating with the Auto Calibration method
This section d escribes calibration u sing the Au to Calibration m ethod .
To calibrate using the Single Calibration m ethod , see Calibratingwith the Single Calibration method on page 44.
1. Use the AIR/ and SHIFT/button to place the promp t next to
th e AUTO CALIBRATION menu op tion.
2. Press the POWER/ ENTER button to display the Calibration
Values screen.
The gas concentrations d isplayed in the Calibration Values screen
must match the gas concentrations listed on the Four-Gas Calibration
Cylind er. Ifall concentrations m atch, go to step 7. Ifone or more
concentrations do not match, continu e with step 3.
