Pastor’s Reflection….Ash Wednesday-Love; Easter-Got Ya!
You might find yourself a little puzzled as you stare into the eyes of your beloved on Valentine’s Day and a smudge of ash is on their forehead. And a prank or two could infiltrate Easter Egg hunts and Easter worship. For you see, this year, Ash Wednesday falls on Feb. 14, Valentine's Day. And Easter is on April 1, also known as April Fools'
Day. It's a quirky calendar coincidence that hasn't happened in decades and one that I don’t think we can ignore.
Ash Wednesday is the start of our Lenten journey into the desert. Just like Jesus experienced the desert for 40 days and nights, we too practice this discipline. Most of us fearfully imagine the desert as a place where we will be left to our own thoughts, hungers, weaknesses and fears. If this were true, then despair would be inevitable. But with Jesus, the desert becomes a place where water and love is found. The days of Lent are focused on building a relationship with Jesus, praying with him, eating with him, learning new ways to love him. Therefore, Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday may be a perfect match. I hope you will join us as we place ashes on our heads remembering that God’s love is an eternal love.
If Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day make the perfect match, I think April Fools on Easter could be an even better combination. Just think, on Easter morning we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus. That event alone is the biggest- Got ya, proclaimed through history and time. It is the best news ever been shared.
So I am pretty excited that these two dates carry some weight and significance, in both the secular and sacred. Come to St. John’s and experience the love shared to us, and come and experience the joy and incredible act of God, as we celebrate, He is Risen, He is Risen, Indeed. Alleluia. Come and join us!
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Shawn
Ash Wednesday Service
St. John’s will host an Ash Wednesday Service on Wednesday, February 14th at
7:00pm. This service will feature the imposition of ashes, reminding us of our mortality
and that each of us, marked with the cross of Christ, makes our way through Lent
longing for the baptismal waters of Easter, our spiritual rebirth.

PAL LUNCH TEAM
The Hanover Area Council of Churches serves a hot meal 365
days a year to approximately 60 to 120 people. These meals are
lovingly made by membership congregation from all across the
area.
St. John’s Lutheran Church recently created a PAL Team and we
are scheduled to serve our next meal on March 2nd.
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!
If you are interested in joining our PAL team, please give Bev Strickler a call at 259-9878.
LAUNDRY LOVE
St. John's is forming a team for Laundry Love (LL).
On March 6th we will need volunteers to help wash
the clothes and bedding of individuals and/or
families living in poverty. We have permission to
operate out of the Laundry Mat in the Kennies Shopping Plaza in Spring Grove. If you are
interested in joining our team please contact the office 717-259-0796 or contact Lisa
Wildasin at 717-451-3909. Lisa is serving as our coordinator. We already have funds to offer
this service to our community, we now need volunteers to help so that we can offer this
opportunity once a month.

Go to http://www.lutherancamping.org/summer/. Did you know that
St. John’s will help pay for camp? We have a camp scholarship fund
built into our budget. As a church, we want to send as many kids to
camp as possible and if someone in your family is interested in going
to a regular week of camp, please contact Rachel Berkebile
([email protected]) who serves as our contact to the camp.
CONFIRMATION CAMP Confirmation camp will be held at Camp Nawakwa on Sunday, June 10th through
Friday, June 15th. Students going into 7th grade are eligible to attend and you are
able to attend for four consecutive years. This is an amazing ministry, one which St.
John’s places as a priority by paying for the entire week of camp. Many of our
youth return for several consecutive years at Confirmation Camp. See Pastor Shawn
for more information.

focus on being called to serve and love.
Lenten Devotional: “you are the way”
“you are the way” will serve as our daily Lenten devotional. Many
members in our congregation like the daily ritual and this offering will
help our congregation reflect on how Jesus describes himself with a
series of “I am” statements: “I am the light of the world,” “I am the good
shepherd,” “I AM,” and so on. This beautiful, full-color devotional
explores one or more “I am” sayings of Jesus during each week in
Lent. The devotional can be picked up in the Fellowship Hall.
