This last month has certainly passed quickly. The Club strutted it’s stuff during the NOOD Regatta March 16 and 17 and again as we hosted 29ers the following weekend. My hats off to Glenn Welch and his group during the challenging NOOD Regatta and to Jill Powell and her team for the excellent 29er competition. T he maintenance crew led by CYC Director of Facilities Fabian Arreola, which includes Mauricio, Carlos, Felipe, Martin, Daniel & Anthony have been busy painting, polishing,

scrubbing and making sure our facilities look the best they possibly can to kick off our “season”. Club office staff of Assistant General Manager Ms. Jane Lee, Neil and Tina are busy organizing reservations and VIPS for the weekend, and the accounting staff of Mark and Leslie are paying the invoices and making sure we stay in budget. Chef Benito & Food Captains: Melissa, Brett, Julee & Amanda and the Food and Beverage team are preparing for a grand weekend of good food and great beverages including having the bar menu available on Memorial Day from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm and bar service from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. The Opening Day weekend festivities kick off with a champagne toast recognizing the CYC Wall of Champions at 5:00 pm just prior to our Cocktail party and Potluck on Friday, May 25th at 6:00 pm, followed by the Commodore’s Dinner Dance on May 26th, our Opening Day Ceremony on May 27th and finishing with the Bailey Opening Day race on Monday May 28th. Mother’s Day is Sunday May 13th and your club has a special scrumptious unlimited champagne buffet planned for you including a seafood station, prime rib, omelettes, decadent desserts and much more. Don’t be left out! Make your reservations today. Our recent Easter brunch sold out a week prior to Easter with 300 members and guests enjoying the offerings. Beer Can season has started and your club is the place to be on Wednesday nights. Chef Benito and our team has a full menu for you to enjoy on Wednesday evenings on the deck, dining room or a special limited to-go menu is available from the snack bar window from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Whether it is catching the wind and racing on the bay, or enjoying your favorite beverage from our friendly bartenders while watching the start of the race from the patio deck, CYC is the place to be! Tuesday, May 15th is the Semi-Annual meeting, one of two regularly scheduled membership meetings of the year. You will soon receive an electronic notice of the meeting indicating the motions that you, as a member, will either approve or disapprove with your vote that is placed in person on May 15th at 7:00 pm in the CYC clubhouse. This is a great opportunity for you to participate on how your club is run by being involved in the voting process. We also have free beer and wine after the meeting for all who attend. This month, you will notice the following improvements at CYC: the men’s and ladies’ rooms will receive upgrades of new partitions and flooring, new exterior couches for the decks, and an expansion of the grass area on our side lawn covered with new sod. I have also been working with the House Chair to update the previously member picked out (2014) bar and dining room chairs with new vendor fabrics which should be showing up in the clubhouse beginning this August. As always if there is anything at the Club that we can improve to enhance your membership experience, please do not hesitate to let me know at [email protected]. Aloha Nui Loa, Manager Lou

Happy May!

At our April Finance Committee meeting, we reviewed and discussed current financial statements. We continue to track well relative to this year’s budget. There were no questions or concerns from the Finance Committee regarding the financials; we are in a healthy financial position and we should see revenues continue to increase as we head farther into the Spring and Summer months. Due to the start of the Beer Can Races, beer sales have skyrocketed. Staff Commodore and Finance Committee member Mark Warner provided an update on a property tax refund that we will be receiving, as well as how to correctly calculate the property taxes attributed to the docks by using a ratio of the dock income divided by total income used to determine Port rent and include methodology in our Index of Decisions. Kudos to Mark for his efforts; it is not easy to convince a property tax assessor that they owe us money. As mentioned last month, the Finance Committee will complete an analysis of the actual costs of our slips at CYC in time for the 2018 Annual Meeting. At the April Finance Committee meeting, we defined all costs associated with the marina. Our plan is to collect data for the categories we defined, review and analyze the data on a monthly basis, and come up with a transparent and accurate report regarding how much it actually costs to run the marina. Treasurer DeNardi provided a recap of account balances & status of bank reconciliation and stated that the account balances are accurate and that the bank reconciliation has been completed through February without any discrepancies or adjustments. We approved a Funds Request for a Clubhouse restroom refurbishment project. By opening day, you will see some improvements and much needed deferred maintenance to our main clubhouse restrooms. We reviewed a final report of Capital Expenditures since 2003 for our clubhouse replacement project. The Finance Committee approved this report and is confident in its accuracy. The Board of Directors also approved this report at the 4/12/2018 Board meeting. This report will be included at this year’s semi-annual meeting packet. Kudos to Don Panek for compiling this information and his forensic accounting research efforts. Club Account Manager Mark Leopold provided a general update. Mark stated that we are in the process of our 2017 review with Considine & Considine. Mark also reiterated that he will be providing the Finance Committee with Marina cost data on a monthly basis, based on the categories we defined. Respectfully submitted, Tom Lyons Vice Commodore Chair, Finance Committee

1. The temporary shallow slips on the golf course side of C Dock assignments change to 7 day rentals starting May 15 and continue through September of each year. Demand for these slips increases

during the Summer Season. If another member does not request this slip the original member may stay an additional 7 days. This may be repeated. These slips are about 20 to 25 feet long. Please be sure to sign up in the Office if you would like to be assigned one of these slips for a 7 day period.

2. Opening Day Weekend is fast approaching. If you have a wet slip please join your Dock in dressing ship and

Y es, we will hold a Rod and Reel meeting this month, the date will be Tuesday, May 1st , 7 PM.

We will discuss the details of the 9th Annual Bay Fishing Challenge, hosted by Silver Gate Yacht Club, along with the details of the CYC 21st Annual South Bay Combined Fishing Tournament to be held on Saturday, August 4th, 2018. Should you plan to participate in either event, you should try to attend the May 1st Rod Reel meeting and have your questions answered. We will also discuss the Annual CYC Fish Fry and Awards Dinner, to be held on Sunday evening, August 5th, 2018. Remember, this event is always a sell-out be sure to sign-up at the front desk. The sign-up sheet will be in the book as of July 5th. Sign-ups are generally 30 days prior to the event. Now that you are marking your calendars, you want to make a note for Tuesday, November 6th. This will be our Annual Rod and Reel Fishing Awards Meeting for 2018. You may well be one of those individuals who receive any of the 70+ gift cards to the Brigantine restaurant or Bait Certificates for Live Bait from Everingham Bros. Bait Company. While constructing this article for the May Whisker Pole, I was just advised that SWYC, who will host the 9th Annual Bay Fishing Challenge, that all fish will be recorded through the “Angler System”. This is a relatively new system designed to take the overall length of the fish and there-by determine your standing in the tournament. All Anglers submitting caught fish will need to have an iPhone to log onto the internet through (“iAngler”), pay $5.00 by charge card and then measure your catch with a special ruler – then send your photo to the Leader Board location for determination of your final standing. Having just received this information - that’s all I know at this time. On Monday, April 23rd, I will have attended a meeting at SWYC for further details. Anglers desiring to fish this tournament can call Paul Dodson at 993-3943 for further update. This will be a big change for most of us, so stay tuned.

O ur first April contest was held on Saturday, April 7, under clear sunny skies and gentle winds. Even the currents were predicted to be benign as this was the mid-month lunar

cycle. The contest began near the entrance to Shelter Island at green channel buoy “17.” The course then led north to Harbor Island and east to the Navy Mooring Buoy “19,” for the first timed Mark. We then did a “paperclip” maneuver from the Navy buoy to red “20” and back again to green channel buoy “21” before heading south to the second timed Mark abeam of the Tenth Avenue Terminal. Next timed Marks included the green GB “1” at the entrance of Glorietta Bay, the red channel buoy “30” following a blind point timed run, and a third timed Mark abeam of Navy Pier “2.” The remaining part of the 13 NM contest contained a timed Mark at the mid-span of bridge piers “19” and “20,” and the Finish abeam of the south side of the Carrier Midway mooring pier. The currents were the only major variable for this busy contest, followed by a fresh breeze coming up from the west towards the end of the contest. The currents, while benign for a dying ebb, did not disappoint in their variability. Early on, it appeared that the currents were maybe one tenth of a knot greater than predicted. As the morning progressed, the currents “died” to slack, leaving our adjustments and predictions in the dust bin. When the scores were announced following lunch at the San Diego YC, Jeff Calabrese from our Club outfoxed us all with a great score of 0.76 percent error. Good going Jeff for a second place finish, just a couple of seconds error off of first place. Both Magnus and I were caught up in the current behavior, and finished seventh and fifth out of ten contestants overall. Another great day on the water accompanied by another “learning experience.” We are again looking forward to our second April contest on Saturday, April 28. We’ll report on our success or learning experiences next month. As I’ve said in many of these newsletters, our Club needs new members to support our sport of cruiser navigation. Coronado YC is now a leader in the San Diego cruiser navigation community, and without new cruisers joining us, we will not continue to prevail. Please, if you own and cruise a power boat, consider joining us for at least a “test” run. There is nothing to lose, and based on my personal experience, much to gain in both knowledge of your boat, confidence in your boat handling, and enjoyment in the camaraderie amongst our Skippers. Please contact me at [email protected] if you would like more information about our sport and allow me to help you become a part of our winning team.

H i everyone, it’s me again, Steve Streifer, and I’m pleased to announce the opening of our 2018 CYC Lipton Cup Pursuit and Fundraising Campaign!

This October will be the 104th sailing of the Lipton Cup Regatta, sponsored once again by the San Diego Yacht Club. In the interest of brevity (and also so that I have something interesting to write about in future articles), I will hold off on a history of the Cup for now. Suffice it to say, it is one of the major, annual sailing events held in the United States, attracting teams from some of the most prestigious yacht clubs (including … of course … our own CYC) from around the country; and we are honored to be invited to compete year-after-year. I’ve been asked by Commodore Eckenroth to chair the Lipton Cup Committee for a third year. Joining us again will be Jeff Jakus, responsible for publicity and fundraising. He will organize another sponsor recognition reception, repeating the very successful receptions of the past two years, in August. Also returning for a repeat appearance are Robbie Haines, who will work with the skipper and crew in training, development and tactics; and Jill Powell, who is instrumental in providing support for the crew as our campaign progresses. We’re very pleased to have Dave Hochart join us as crew leader and skipper, to work very closely with Robbie. Dave is stepping in for Jon Rogers, who did a fantastic job for the past few years, but who is stepping down to devote his full time to our great Junior Sailing Program; and for Patrick Powell, who also did a fantastic job as crew leader and skipper for the fast few years. Dave has been a CYC member for two years. He’s been actively competing in sailing events for twenty -four years. Dave began sailing competitively in Lasers as a youth sailor at the local level in California and throughout the United States in national championships. He attended University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he was a member of the collegiate sailing team and competed in the ISAF international match racing circuit. Dave currently competes in highly-competitive match racing and one-design keelboat events around the world. In addition to Dave, our crew this year consists of the following group of highly-qualified, experienced and dedicated sailors: Zack Maxam – Tactician; Pike Harris – Main Trim; Justin Bingham – Jib/Spinnaker Trim; Chuck Eaton – Pit/Strategy; Sterling Henken – Mast; Eric Bernsen – Bow. Many of these men are returning from prior Lipton Cup Regattas. What I think is exceptional about our crew every year is that most of them have come up through Jon’s Junior Sailing Program! They remain involved in our Club. Our success in the Lipton Cup is a testament to the Club’s success in developing great sailing talent. Now for the pitch! I believe that the Lipton Cup is a truly worthy endeavor for the reputation and prestige of our Club and as inspiration for our Junior Sailors. Mounting our campaign takes money: entry fee, damage deposit, chartering of practice boats, insurance, crew support, and so on. We rely on contributions from our members to continue to be able to compete in the Lipton Cup year-after-year, and we hope that your generosity will continue this year. You will receive a flyer in your future billing statement about the 2018 Lipton Cup Campaign, along with a slip that enables you to contribute through your monthly dues. Of course, you can also contribute through cash or check (made out to Coronado Maritime Foundation), or through a dues check-off slip, at the front desk. Your contribution is tax deductible. Any contribution of $150 or more will earn a handsome sponsor shirt … check out the members proudly sporting those shirts from last year and you won’t be able to resist! Last year we finished 7th out of 12 teams from around the nation. This year we want 1st … Please help us get there!

Entertainment Report

By Entertainment Chair Nancy Eckenroth

“May is the month of sunshine and flowers

Birds in their nests and one or two showers" As promised April went out like a lamb and ushered into CYC's naturally beautiful setting May's gorgeous flower gardens and grounds. As a matter of fact, Coronado Yacht Club was awarded a blue ribbon and star during the flower show judging thanks to the talents of Erin Miller and Mel Whittemore and the hard work and dedication of the grounds crew led by Fabian Arreola. Thank you Felipe! Also as promised the Easter Egg Hunt and the Easter Sunday Brunch were both fabulous events that brought many of our CYC families to the club to enjoy the sunshine, fun and great food. Many thanks to Michele Albin for planning and hosting the little ones as they hunted for eggs, had their faces painted (led by Bart Albin), bounced, swung and snacked, did crafts and, best of all …petted bunnies.

Easter Sunday dawned bright and beautiful as many two, three and even four generation families dressed up and trekked to the club. Benito revved up his staff to serve two full seatings of a fantastic brunch buffet and while I am always happy to see bacon on the menu, there were many complements on the made to order omelets and guests were especially pleased with the scrumptious seafood station. Best of all were the happy smiles seen and the excited greetings heard as families reunited for this special holiday. Coming up in May there are two very traditional, and much looked forward too, events at CYC. The first is Mother's Day Brunch. The club will be decked out to honor our Moms and Grandmoms and a very special menu is planned as well. Sign up early to come, relax and celebrate Mom with a view of the bay. Check the flyer for details. Opening Day Weekend is also coming up this month! This is a weekend that rivals the Fourth for fun but is definitely more "yachty" and more specific to CYC. The weekend begins on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend with a pot luck appetizer party. Think old home week with a band. On Saturday, the Commodore's Dinner Dance will be in full swing. A (wear your) "White" party is being planned with "navy/gold" accents and, of course, a surprise or two. So brighten your whites, work on your tans and sign up early. Opening Day is Sunday with its traditional pomp and circumstance and a chance to honor so many that have done so much to make CYC proud. Our veterans will be honored as well as we are blessed to share our Opening Day with Memorial Day weekend. So plan on spending lots of time at the club. Its going to be phenomenal!

Summer sign-ups started last month and we are sold out of most of the sabot classes, few of the fishing classes (which is new this year) and have over 200 sailors signed up in just less than a month! We had record-breaking fundraising this month with the wine & spirit tasting event. Thank you to Susie Owens, Catherine Henson, Bill Rogers for providing all of the wine and spirits tasting for the party. Thanks to all of the members who donated their favorite wine for the auction and all of the wineries that donated to us. We raised in a short 2 hours $8,000.00 for the new sabot fund. I cannot name everyone but a special thank you to, Steve Schelkun, Tom Moore, Doug Pate with Isle Sup, Marita & David Bodkin, Ernie Prieto, Erin Miller, Sarah Yakutis and the 160 guest that came to support the Juniors. A big Thank You to my Sabot donors: Patti & Roger Witalis, Dianne & Tom Lookabaugh, Tom & Peggy Moore, Roy & Deborah Kaller, Jason Anderson, Philip Youngberg, Betty Everett (3 Sabots) and Anne & Gerral David. We are halfway to the goal of 20 sabots. Our first few sabots will be here by June 10th. San Diego area Yacht Clubs is having a Padres night again on Tuesday, June 19th at 7:10 pm. Tickets are $19.50. Go online to get your tickets at https://groupmatics.events/s/other/SailingNight We are looking forward to a fun summer at CYC. Why We Do the Amazing Race for Children’s Wishes!

From the Make-A-Wish Amazing Race Committee

E ach year we “adopt” two wishes for our Amazing Race for Children’s Wishes event. Take a moment to get to know our 10th Anniversary Wish Kids, both of whom we anticipate will be in attendance during our Signature Bike event

on Saturday, June 9! Our target this year is to raise $250,000! An average wish costs about $10,000; please help us reach our goal so that we can help grant lots more wishes to children in San Diego with critical illnesses.

Caden’s wish to go to New Zealand Eleven-year-old Caden is a ball of energy. In addition to playing soccer, football, and basketball, he likes to ride his skateboard with friends, and spends as much time outside as possible. Due to his leukemia treatments, Caden isn’t always able to be as active as he’d like and even had to reschedule his meeting with wish granters around his treatments. Once he was able to meet with them, he was able to tell them about his most desired wish right away: to travel to New Zealand with his family. His top priorities for his wish are to tour Middle Earth (Lord of the Rings tour), go fishing on the ocean, and visit a farm where he can learn to make cheese. Caden’s trip is scheduled for February 2018, and we can’t wait to hear all about his experiences upon his return!

Kalea’s wish to go to Hawaii Six-year-old Kalea absolutely loves animals. She dreams of swimming with sea turtles, exploring tide pools for creatures, and hopes to one day even see a unicorn! Since being diagnosed with leukemia, Kalea has endured many challenging medical treatments, and often cannot participate in as many activities as she is used to. But this sweet & goofy little girl doesn’t let that get her down! One of her favorite pastimes is digging for big twirly sea shells at the beach, and according to her family, “she is very connected to the ocean”. Kalea’s wish to go to Hawaii became clear as all conversations came back to sea shells, hula dancing, and one of her favorite movies, Moana.

In the world of sail racing, there are two main types. One, the dissimilar designs fleet where handicaps, generally time allowance are assigned, such as in our club races and two, one-design or class fleets where all entries are the same design and the boats are raced boat for boat so who finishes first is the winner. For a series of more than one race or for a regatta for more than one design, race points are totaled for total results. To hold a race, you need to have a race committee, who oversees publications of the race instructions, the copy of the race rules specifying the right of way, marks of the course are specified in the race instruction, location and time of the race or races and conducts the start and finish of each race and scores the participants. There is also a protest committee to adjudicate a violation of rules. Nowadays, some races have course judges. During my 70-years of sail racing, the principles are basically the same but some basic rules have been modified. In the old days, striking a mark or infringing another boat’s rights called for withdrawal from the race and loss of score for that race. Nowadays, many races mitigation can be achieved by penalty turns or other measures. Traditionally, races were started to a buoy upwind of the starting line with second mark downwind or diagonally on a reach then to the leeward mark. The legs of the course were referred to as windward leeward and triangle. There were also destination courses for races where the finish was in another location thus the TRANSPAC from San Pedro to Hawaii as an example. Some refinements to the windward leeward and triangle is placement of a clearing mark near the windward mark so lead boats turning downwind into a flock of boats approaching a mark is avoided. Another change is setting two leeward marks which gives you a choice of either mark to round to spread the fleet. Over the 70 years, I have seen unimagined change in sailboats in general and racing boats in particular. After World War II, there was a tremendous growth in the sport of sailing. Harbor booms were removed and security relaxed, buying and building boats were popular. In the 50s, boats experienced the fiberglass revolution, surfers started putting sails on their boards, and Hobie marketed the small catamaran which was immensely popular. Quickly gone were the wooden hulls and masts I grew up with and cotton

sails. This created a huge base for sailing and the sport kept growing. In the 80s, the yacht charter business blossomed in the BVI and then spread to prime vacation spots around the world aided by the aviation/travel convenience. It didn’t stop there. The Moth class experimented with foiling and was reinvented and rigid wing sails replaced soft sails in some instances. Back to the racing scene, racing and sailing’s prime attractions were the Olympics and the America’s Cup. In 1984, our three sailors Robbie, Eddie and Rod went to Los Angeles and took the Olympic Gold in the sailing class, a spectacular achievement, years of competitions and trainings but not to the scope of today’s requirements. Our 49er challenger Hans Henken and Judge Ryan, current North American champions are going to Spain, Netherlands, Kiel Week (Germany), France (European Championship), Denmark (World Championship), then Enoshima, Japan and New Zealand for the World Championship. This is just for 2018, more in 2019 and 2020. See Hans’ brochure and donate to a worthy cause. Also, his sister Paris did well in the Rio Olympics in the women’s 49er. I believe she plans to challenge again. It would be nice to see another Gold or two in 2020 for the Club. Looking at the America’s Cup, it is now reverted to big bucks and professional sailors as it was in the 30s. Last year, the race was sailed in Bermuda in extreme catamarans with wing sails and foils, meaning the hulls were out of the water during the majority of the race in speeds of 40 knots or more. New Zealand was the winner over Oracle USA which had won the previous competition in San Francisco four years before. Vast sums of money are spent on these competitions. This year, our own Cooper Dressler was signed on to the crew of USA, New York Yacht Club challenger for the 2021 event. They start practice in Newport, Rhode Island late this year. Here at home, spark plug Coach Jon has a talented group of Juniors, both boys and girls sailing nationwide. Compare that with my experience in the late 40s and early 50s, when while qualifying for the college champs, we didn’t have any money to go. I went to one college regatta on the east coast because I was in school there and then one class championship in New Jersey with a pickup crew and a borrowed boat. It’s a better world for youngsters these days. Another big difference was, it was a men’s skippers-only culture. These days, we have many talented women skippers and crew on the race course and training programs. Charlie PS: I’m still looking for stories for future stories of “Dock Lines”, a story about cruiser navigation and other boating adventures. Drop them off at the CYC office marked Memory Lane.
