EALING LIBRARIES WHAT’S ON GUIDE OCT-DEC 2018 Welcome to Ealing Libraries What’s on Guide October – December 2018 October is Black History month, when organisations in Britain and the USA remember the contributions made by black people, to the development of both countries in terms of science, the arts, culture, music and economic progress. There is an exciting line up of events in libraries across the borough to celebrate and commemorate the heroes and pioneers that made their mark in history. We are pleased to be working with Narrative Eye an organisation dedicated to promoting equality and social change through education. They are dedicated to the production and promotion of creative works that document and challenge the inequalities and injustices faced by African and African Caribbean people in the UK. Historian and writer Dr Onyeka Nubia will be leading a series of talks about the African contribution and influence to the Tudor period of England and there will be also be a touring exhibition “Empire needs Men” which tells the stories of African soldiers in the Allied war effort, starting at Southall Library then moving on to Acton and Greenford Libraries. Dr Maleiha Malik will be speaking about the state of race relations from the implementation of the 1968 Race Relations Act to the advent of Brexit. Welcome to Ealing Libraries What’s on Guide October – December 2018 October is Black History month, when organisations in Britain and the USA remember the

contributions made by black people, to the development of both countries in terms of science, the

arts, culture, music and economic progress. There is an exciting line up of events in libraries across

the borough to celebrate and commemorate the heroes and pioneers that made their mark in

history. We are pleased to be working with Narrative Eye an organisation dedicated to promoting

National Libraries Week takes place between the 8–13 October to celebrate the nation’s much-loved

libraries and we have lots going on, with storyteller John Kirk giving a special Shakespeare

performance at Southall Library and the wonderful poet Justin Coe will be at Acton and West Ealing

libraries to entertain and educate children = Turn to page X for more details of all our National

Libraries Week activities.

Black History Month: " From the Race Relations Act 1968 to Brexit Britain 2018 - 50 Years of Progress?" Maleiha Malik Maleiha Malik is a Professor in Law. She studied law at the University of London and University of Oxford. She is a barrister and a member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn. Maleiha Malik’s research focuses on the theory and practice of discrimination law. She has written extensively on discrimination law, minority protection and feminist theory. In this thought provoking talk Maheila Malik will discuss the state of Race Relations in Britain from the Act in 1968 to the advent of Brexit today. Southall Library Saturday 6 October 2.30pm

The Hidden Early History of Asian and Black Ealing The talk concerns the early history (up to 1939) of Asian and black people in the locality, from film stars to villains. There are well known figures such as Cleo Laine (pictured), Sabu, John Alexander Barbour James and Grace Stevenson, as well as Indian students, an Indian doctor and a spurned lover who formulated a murder plot. S.I. Martin - 18th century Black Freedom fighters in Britain

Join author S.I. Martin as he re-examines a spectrum of Black lives in 18th century London. Discover how the decisions made by Black servants, seamen, business people and the enslaved contributed to traditions of resistance, antislavery and radical thought in Britain and across the world. S.I. Martin is a writes and researches the history of Black people in Britain. He has published fiction and non-

Blackamoores in Tudor England Illuminating a Hidden Time – Explore the period of Tudor England, the African contribution and influence at the time. Empire Needs Men – Touring Exhibition and talk An exhibition portraying the individual stories of African soldiers, regiments and community including the history surrounding them. It is an exciting and thoughtful collection of images that will give real references for discussion to raise awareness and inspire black students; they have heroes and heroines that contributed to peace, similar to modern day. To Launch the Exhibition Dr Oneyka Nubia will be giving a talk about the stories of the African soldiers and how the images were collected. The Extraordinary life of Mary Seacole by Dame Elizabeth Anionwu Dame Elizabeth Anionwu will be giving a special talk about the late, great Mary Seacole, the British-Jamaican Businesswoman and nurse who independently set up the “British Hotel” to tend to servicemen during the Crimean War. Dame Elizabeth Anionwu worked as a nurse during the 70’s/80’s and in particular specialised in care of Sickle Cell sufferers, becoming a Dame in 2017 when awarded a DBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours for services to nursing and the Mary Seacole Statue Appeal. Northfields Library Thursday 25 October 2pm

Jak Beula Beula was the founder of the Nubian Jak Community Trust, which is based in Kilburn, is the only national black and ethnic minority plaque and sculpture scheme in the UK. Jak will speak about his work and include a celebration of Eric and Jessica Huntley’s contribution to black publishing. Japanese Cultural evening

West Ealing Library will be hosting a Japanese Autumn event with an evening of music and craft. From contemporary art to ruins, relics and the surviving structures of ancient capitals, Japan has over a thousand years of history and culture. To find out more come along and enjoy Japanese music

Remembering Wilfred Owen Wilfred Edward Salter Owen, MC was an English poet and soldier. He was one of the leading poets of the First World War. His war poetry on the horrors of trenches and gas warfare was heavily influenced by his mentor Siegfried Sassoon, and stood in stark contrast both to the public perception of war at the time and to the confidently patriotic verse written by other poets Among his best-known works – most of which were published posthumously – are "Dulce et Decorum est", "Insensibility", "Anthem for Doomed Youth", "Futility", "Spring Offensive" and "Strange Meeting". Identify right angles. Identify horizontal and vertical lines and pairs of perpendicular and parallel lines. Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths (m/cm/mm). story during that fateful summer: from its formation amidst political wrangling,

Moorhouse

Roger Moorhouse takes a fascinating and novel

approach to the history of Nazi Germany,

approaching the subject by examining some of the

objects that the regime created, invented, awarded,

military and political history, as well as propaganda,

technology and culture, this is an illuminating and

unconventional look at a familiar subject.

LEGO Education Workshops

Children will be introduced to the fun and interactive LEGO Education programmes, WeDo and StoryStarter. Using LEGO Education children can stretch their imagination and boost their literacy and numeracy skills, as well as develop their understanding of computing and design technology. Suitable for children aged 8 - 12 years old. Admission: Advance booking required through the relevant library. £7.50 library members / £12.00 non library members per workshop, each workshop is 3 consecutive sessions. Walk to School Challenge Ealing Council’s active travel challenge takes place during October. Schools across the borough have been invited to encourage children to walk, scoot and cycle to school for at least 10 days during the month. Libraries will display children’s drawings, showing what they enjoy on their way to school. These fantastic designs were created for the May active travel challenge and the winning drawing has been made into a bookmark for this Autumn’s challenge. Come along to your local library to see the designs, pick up some road safety resources or borrow books about active, safe and sustainable travel.

Remembering the First World War: Talks Commemorating the End of the First World War’ Dr Jonathan Oates, Ealing Local Studies Archivist The celebrations in Britain marking the end of World War Two are well known but those for the end of the First World War are less known. This talk looks at how the earlier Allied victory was marked in the locality. 'Collecting Under Fire: Soldier-Scholars and the First World War’ Julia Tubman, Curator at Gunnersbury Park Museum Gunnersbury Park Museum's archaeological collections benefit greatly from the contributions of Major Frederick Sadler and Reverend Samuel Gentle-Cackett. How did these extraordinary men manage to continue their scholarly pursuits whilst serving abroad during the First World War and how did it influence their interests? The Ealing World War One Servicemen's database Thousands of men joined the armed forces in 1914-1918 and this database attempts to capture the details of some of them. Information is taken from electoral registers, newspapers, war memorials and sources from the National Archives and Commonwealth War Graved Commission registers. It lists men's names and where possible, rank, regiment, address and a source for further information about each man. It often notes whether a man was killed, wounded, made prisoner of war or was decorated for gallantry. This talk explains how and why the database was constructed and recounts some of the stories of some of the men featured. The talk is by the database's creator, Dr Jonathan Oates.
