Chairman’s Piece

It certainly doesn't seem like a year has passed

since I last wished all EAMG members a Happy

Christmas and prosperous New Year but on be-

half of the Committee I would like to extend my

best wishes to each and every one of you.

Let me apologise to you all for my failure to get a

Chairman's Piece written for the October edition

of TUG but for the first time in eleven years pressure of work got the bet-

ter of me! It's not all bad though as I was riding a motorcycle for nearly

every daylight hour and it doesn't get much better than that. It's been an

interesting time too as I've had the opportunity to get to grips with some

of the latest 'sports touring' tyres from Dunlop, Bridgestone and Michelin.

They are all pretty impressive with more than enough grip to grind your

bike away in the dry but the Michelin Pilot Road 3 just pips the others in

the wet offering a confidence I've never experienced on a road tyre. It

also is lasting well and looks set to reach about 8000 miles on my

CBR1000F. Second is the Bridgestone BT023 - marginally grippier in the

dry than the Michelin ( which is let down by front braking performance

not cornering grip) and slightly ahead of the nethertheless impressive

Dunlop Roadsmarts. The way modern tyres offer grip and life now would

have been impossible 10 years ago so rock on the next 10 years!!

Amazingly as of the 21st November, I have only been out of my Summer

gloves for 4 days as the British weather continues to throw curve ball af-

ter curve ball. But, I'm not going to knock it because the more fun I can

stretch out of the days the better because at some point the weather

gods will intervene.

With Chris Johnson sadly sidelined by illness - and we all wish you well

Chris - Dave Iszard is going to step into the breech and run a quiz on De-

cember Group and Kate from Hideout is coming along to the Group in

Remember, it's not how fast you ride but how you ride fast!

January. Please make every effort to support these events. February will

be the AGM and nomination forms will be available in this issue of TUG.

There will be big changes in the Committee for 2012 and the new com-

mittee will need your help and support. If you feel that you can offer any-

Dear Chris,

I have been very busy for Rospa this year on the examining side, especially Bikes. I would like to say a big thank you to all the Observers for the excellent standard of riders they have turned out this year. I'm sure that a lot of hard work has been done over the months and I can assure you that you are making a big difference the Motorcycling public you come into contact with.

The Group should be very proud collectively for their contribution now, and since 1982.

Hopefully I will be able to make a group night in the future to meet up with old friends.

Secretary’s Report

EAMG ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meet-ing of the Essex Advanced Motorcycle Group will take place on Tuesday 7th February 2012 commencing at 8pm. Meeting and Nomination Details 1. Listed below are the committee positions that will become vacant, although in accordance with our Memorandum and Articles of Association, all posts are declared vacant at the AGM and existing Committee members are permitted to stand again for election to their previous position. A current list of Commit-tee Members appears inside the front cover of this issue.

2. If only one nomination is received for a post then there will be no need to hold a formal vote for that position, unless requested by a full member of the group whose membership is up to date at the time of the AGM.

3. A nomination form is included in this issue and given to the Secretary at least seven days prior to the meeting.

4. All members attending are required to sign in arrival.

5. The meeting will commence on time, after which no one will be admitted during the formal part of the meeting.

Our Chairman, Chris Reed will stand down from this role, however, he has indicated that he will stand for election as General Committee. Last year, Sue Saunders, our Treasurer, who, for some years has provided these services to a very high level and kept our accounts in perfect order as well as providing valuable information to the committee on a monthly basis, will be standing down. Ellie Murphy will also stand down as TUG Editor. Paul McKelvey, who has been a Committee member for many years, will be appointed our Finan-cial and Legal advisor and as such there will be no need to elect him. Paul looks after the filing of accounts and ensures that we comply with the charity laws on a regular basis. Paul receives no remuneration for this.

In Summary.

The group has performed well since breaking from the IAM some years ago, and under Chris Reeds’ leadership over many years, along with the Training Team, achieving a very high level of respect for the training they deliver to members of the Group.

We have also maintained a high level of new people joining EAMG, and core members compared to other groups in the area, and this has been due to the exceedingly hard work put in promoting the group over the last two years by Graham and Lyn Childs. This role has been, and is, key to new members and needs someone or indeed some people to work with Graham during 2012 with a view to taking on this role from Graham at some point in the future.

Finally, on behalf of the Chairman and members of the Committee, I would like to thank all of those members who are standing down for the hard work they have undertaken during the last year and thank them all for their contri-butions to the group, some, over many years.

I hope this gives an overview of the situation with the group and an opportu-nity for everyone to take the group forward. New ideas are the centre of a good organisation, so, if you feel you would like to be involved at a higher level in either administration or training, please contact me for further infor-mation or see me at Group Night.

This and That

More ‘do and dare’ as I plunge once more into eBay. I fancied an Aprilia Tuono and as they don’t demand a lot of money for a decent one from around 2003/4/5. I searched the listings to see what was on offer and then I got cold feet just before bidding. I couldn’t imagine going through this winter on an Aprilia it did-n’t tick my box of an all-rounder, maybe I was wrong. Then I started looking at 900cc Hornets. Old hat now, as they are several models old they were rea-sonably priced and as with motor bikes some don’t get used much so low mileage examples are out there. I found my chosen bike and bid on it a few seconds before the auction ended. I was the only bidder so got it at what I considered an acceptable price. Now my heart is in my mouth, have I bought an unseen dog, I know it was all legit as I had an HPI check but was it a wreck ? Down to Margate, I had already emailed the seller to say if it was as described there would be no problem, indicating that if it was ’not’ as de-scribed I could withdraw my offer. Hey presto ! A decent low mileage Honda Hornet in good nick. There is a lot to be said for chain spray, when sprayed on liberally and often it will coat a lot of vulnerable parts, when I cleaned it off, there was good bike underneath. There is a sad side to this - I will have to sell my cherished CB 500 as there is a shortage of room in the garage and I can’t justify keeping it although I’m trying.

RIDE REPORT ’1’

I expected about fifteen to twenty riders to turn up on Graham Childs social ride to Graffham Water in Cambridgeshire. A very nice morning dawned and forty members decided they would rather come out for a ride than rake leaves and mow the grass. Confusion threatened to hamper the start at Boreham services. Chelmsford and District Advanced Motorcycle Group and the ROSPA group had arranged to meet for their ride out also which meant over one hun-dred bikes were assembled at one time in one place. It all seemed to sort it self out as the three groups dispersed in different directions all within their own ‘tribe’. Nigel Barton was there showing off his newly repaired Tiger hav-ing recently been ‘rear ended’ to the tune £2800 ( I think) however he didn’t come with us as work beckoned or was it because he’s not allowed out by himself at the moment. It was good to see six lady riders, there would have been seven but Jane Parnham was tempted away by one of the other groups to make up their lady content of two.


An excellent route arranged by Graham and Lyn took us on the best bike roads through Essex into Cambridgeshire and good unimpeded progress was made - until we got to Duxford. The traffic ground to a halt as they queued to get into The Autumn Air Show. We queued respectfully under the gaze of three traffic policemen and when we were a little way down the road (and out of sight) we were able to use the other side of the traffic cones clearly in-tended for us as no one else was there.

We threaded our way through minor ‘A’ roads and a lot of decent ‘B’s but don’t ask me the route as it was just ‘go with the markers’ and end up at Graffham. I do remember one road number though the B645. I was following Mike (Bikermike) when he hit a mid corner bump, the bike left the ground and Mike left the bike and before they both came back to earth the Blackbird was seen to be all crossed up, wheels in different directions and Mikes only contact with the bike was him hanging on to the bars. Having duly been entertained it was my turn, I was launched and my legs swept the tank bag magnets off one side but I landed with the bike and somehow the tank bag landed back on the tank but not quite in the same position. I gave a nervous chuckle, relieved we got away with it.

During the ride I spent a few miles with each of the ladies and sufficient to say they all rode studiously and were a credit to the group , they don’t seem to be lured into the mischief that the lads do ? ? ? A leisurely lunch and chat to the others and home to Essex but not before a filling station invasion of forty bikes which caused the lone cashier a little concern.

RIDE REPORT ‘2’.

Richards full member ride to Jack’s Hill Café at Towcester which usually at-tracts about 15 members but a quick count up revealed 32 and that was on a day that threatened rain and early darkness as the clocks had turned back. Numbers swelled by the Dengie Bike Club made a welcome change to ride in different company. As with all Richards rides you are expected to get on with it and off we went. By the time we were clear of Chelmsford there were big gaps in the group but with the marker system used to good effect no one was lost. I followed Jill Winn down the 1060 and with little traffic to encounter we were treated to a clear run. I stuck to Jill like glue (not easy) thinking wrongly that I was filming her but having not pressed the record button there were no results. Jill got fed up with me too close and waved me through.

The ride settled down and just before Potterspury on the A5 it rained and I wondered how certain people were getting on who had only leathers on. Pull-ing up at the café I spied Geoff Preston already inside at a table - he didn’t waste any time did he. The food came out in dribs and drabs until we were all fed which was no mean feat considering the number of us. Back on the bikes and ready to go I spotted Geoff still at his table having got his dinner last -

how did that happen.

Head straight back now, no, this is a Richard ride we havn’t covered the rest of Northamptonshire yet. So North we go for petrol and eventually turn South for Essex. The night falls and the rain comes and everyone goes on to autopi-lot, my spirit was beginning to ‘flag’ and by the time we arrived at Boreham most of the others had peeled of for home. But it was a good day out and I dare say Geoff has gotten over his indigestion . Nigel was there on the mended Triumph, still not allowed out on his own Mrs Barton was on the pil-lion to oversee proceedings.

Time is the most precious commodity you can have it’s irreplaceable and must be spent wisely. Quite agreeable then was a Revellier trip to the Austrian Alps as organised by John and Audrey Tipper. I’ve no wish to spend my holiday tours racing around in a foreign country and see nothing of it. Nicki, myself and eleven others of a like mind had a great ten days touring the best roads John could find to entertain us. Brilliant hotels through out, decent weather, if

BMF Report

Most of you are probably aware that the EU is proposing some changes to regulations on the manufacture and use of bikes. The proposals are an EU Regulation on type approval for Motorcycles. A type approval is a way of ensuring conformity of a product to given standards and isn’t Motorcycle specific. It ensures that any given product conforms to certain safety and technical standards.

Having type approval means that every bike produced does not have to be inspected to ensure it is safe before having a registration document issued. If a manufacturer declares a product as conforming to type approval and produces supporting documentation then the motorcycle is said to be type approved.

The reason for the new Regulation is to bring various bits of legislation in to one place and to take the opportunity of adding new requirements and modifying others. Hence the press coverage and some of the hype that has accompanied it. Some of that coverage has been about as accurate as the Daily Mail and the EU Straight Banana directive but some proposals are not likely to be welcomed.

The BMF has been active along with other biking organisations in lobbying both the EU and the UK government.

Not all the proposals are bad news. Some could in fact be an improvement! In order to cut through some of the hype and myths the BMF have produced a pré-cis of the EU proposals and the views that they have expressed in their lobby-ing. I’ll try and keep it even shorter and the jargon to a minimum, here goes.

Proposal Anti-tampering: they want rules to make it difficult to make changes to the engine and drive train.

Busted Myths Doesn’t apply to all bikes – just new ones. There will not be spot checks on bikes. It will not make it illegal to change components on bikes.

The BMF is lobbying against saying ‘not necessary’.

UK Government saying ‘not necessary’ on larger bikes (already applies to 50 cc bikes which of course are never tampered with!)


Proposal Powers to specify safety equipment. Mandatory ABS, Automatic Head-lights On (AHO).

Busted Myths Will exclude off road bikes, off switch probably left up to manu-facturers, AHO by and large already here.

BMF Says ABS should be a consumer choice, and are against AHO.

UKG Says ABS likely to have safety benefit.

Proposal On Board Diagnostics, will be compulsory in two stages.

Busted Myths It is not a tracking device! It just shows component failure or component out of range, will not stop the bike from working.

BMF Says it may make repairs quicker and cheaper, also says the data must be available to owners and must not disable bikes.

UKG Says OBD MkI too expensive may favour OBD MkII.

Proposal Bring pollutant levels for bikes in line with cars over three stages.

Busted Myths It has been said that bikes release much higher levels of pollut-ants than cars – not true

Catalytic converters can’t be fitted to bikes, they can and are. Bikes over 7 years old will not be banned from city centres.

BMF Strongly supports this as the long term political support for biking will in part rely on bikes being as clean as cars.

UKG Supports phase one but thinks the rest is too expensive.

Proposal Manufactures to publish CO2 emission figures and fuel consumption figures.

BMF Strongly supports as it will make fuel consumption data available to motor-cyclists.

UKG In favour.


Proposal Repair and servicing information must be available outside of dealer networks.

BMF Strongly in favour as it should encourage competition and allow home re-pairs and servicing on more sophisticated machinery.

UKG In favour with exemption for small manufacturers on cost grounds.

Other myths There is nothing in the proposals to enforce the wearing of Hi-Vis clothing, no town centre bans for old bikes, no power limits, no Euro MOTs. Some of these were discussed and rejected or are problems in other individual countries but are not remotely close to being UK law.

What happens next? The EU Parliament’s internal markets committee is cur-rently debating the issue and has proposed some changes. It will then go to the full European Parliament for a vote in January. After that representatives of European Governments in the Council of Europe will vote on it. If they both vote in favour it will become law.

What are the BMF doing? They have been lobbying on this issue for several years both with the UK Government and the EU. In Europe they have been lob-bying alongside FEMA (Federation of European Motorcycle Associations) and the FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocylisme).

The result of all the lobbying is that the UK Governments position is fairly close to the BMF.

The BMF position in short is that they are in favour of rules that improve compe-tition and ensure quality standards for new equipment and retailed accessories. They are against any moves to limit the owners ability to modify or improve their bikes. The BMF also supported a rally to Brussels to make their views known to the powers that be. Dear Members,

The winter is well and truly on it’s way with frosty mornings,

and the windy weather recently has blown the last of the

leaves off the trees. We’ve had fabulous weather this year,

and from the looks of things, everyone’s been out and about

this year despite the rising fuel costs.

In this issue, I hope you enjoy Réveiller Rides 2011, certainly

really enjoyable for those who partook—do take up the

opportunity to head off on one or more of these trips next

year!

Nigel Barton was very kindly interviewed, and we have a look at

some of the bikes he’s been through— at the tender age of 10

and ploughing up the back garden with his rear tyre, he’s got to

be one of EAMG’s earliest starters!!

It’s been a busy year for me, too, but not on my bike! My

Kawasaki z750 has been neglected for a while now—I use it

mainly to get up to and around London, on a work basis.

Being self-employed, time has become tighter and tighter, and it’s

come to the point where it’s a real push for me to get TUG out on

each deadline. It’s been a fabulous year—I’ve really enjoyed

editing TUG (always knowing I’m the first to read This and That)

and all the more technical stuff with layout and typesetting…. but

the time has come to hand it on.

I’ll be stepping down, with my last issue of February 2012. If you

have an interest in editing TUG, do email me at

Réveiller Rides - 2012 Itinerary

“Réveiller Votre Penchant Pour La Motocyclisme” ‘Revitalize your love of motorcycling’

but, I can hear you say, I’ve not lost my love of motorcycling. We’re sure you haven’t but

the more mature of us can remember when there was far less traffic, appropriate speed

limits and decent roads to ride. Sadly those days are long gone but are they? Join us on

one of our rides and let us show you otherwise. We’ll organise everything for you and

accompany you unless you prefer to explore on your own. Our brochure will be available

early in the New Year but here is a brief summary of the rides we have planned for 2012.

RV1201 (4 day) Sat 21st to Tue 24th April Scenic D’ Tour

With a daily mileage within France less than 230 miles, using picturesque ‘D’ roads this

scenic tour is ideal for solo riders, riders carrying a pillion or riders who haven’t ventured

abroad on a motorcycle before. Audrey and I will accompany you unless you prefer to

explore on your own and by using three hotels, we give you the best opportunity in a

short time to experience just how good the roads in France can be.

RV1202 (4 day) Sat 5th to Tue 8th May Cote d’Or (Experienced)

We haven’t been to the Cote d’Or in earnest for a couple of years so those of you who’ve

been there before and miss the fabulous roads and those who’ve just heard about them,

now is your chance. We have just four days so there will be days with mileage in France

of circa 300 miles so this is a ride for the experienced.

RV1203 (10 day) Sat 16th to Mon 25th June Schwarzwald & Bavaria

(Experienced)

Our route to Bavaria will take us through Schwarzwald (Germany’s Black Forest) so we’ll

be sure to ride a section of the 500! In Bavaria we’ll have the opportunity to visit ‘The

Eagles Nest’, Hitler’s retreat in the mountains at Berchtesgaden, ride the Deutsche Al-

penstrasse and the 2,505 meter high Grossglockner Pass in Austria. Demanding roads

with some high daily mileage (not exceeding 300) mean this ride is for the experienced.


RV1204 (5 day) Sat 7th to Wed 11th July Cote d’Or

Audrey and I discovered the roads in the Cote d’Or by chance when looking for a hotel;

road maps of the area give little indication of the wonderful roads to be ridden. Anonym-

ity is to our gain though as traffic is minimal so why not join us to see what all the fuss is

about? Five days gives us time to ride scenic ‘D’ roads to the area and a day to enjoy the

superb riding that is on offer.

RV1205 (11 day) Sat 8th to Tue 18th September Austrian Alpes (Experienced)

By popular demand we are returning to Austria with the added bonus of a full day in

Schwarzwald. This 11 day riding adventure takes us to the heart of the Austrian Alps

where we stay for five nights at a four star ‘Motorrad’ friendly hotel. The most beautiful

Alpine routes and 100 passes are waiting for you in 5 countries; Austria, Italy, Germany,

Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Words are inadequate to describe the incredible feeling

of just being there, even photographs cannot do justice to the splendour. Demanding

roads with some high daily mileage mean this ride is for the experienced.

RV1206 (5 day) Sat 5th to Wed 9th October Massif Central (Experienced)

If you love riding your bike then this is a ride not to miss. After a short distance on Péage

we join open and flowing ‘D’ roads to our first hotel just north of Auxerre. We continue

south through the beautiful region of Nièvre, which will be stunning in early autumn, to

the Auvergne region in the Massif Central to our second hotel. A two night stay gives us

the opportunity to explore the stunning roads of the area, sadly missed when we visited

in 2011. Our route then turns north to the Côte d’Or for our final night before returning

to Calais. We’ll cover over 1,500 miles so this 5 day riding delight is definitely a ride for

the experienced.

We now have two training schemes for Full Members:

Full Member Training (FMT) - Four one-day training courses;

Further Training for Full Members (FTFM)

– Assignment to an Observer.

These Training courses are being provided by EAMG for Full Members wishing to take further training to check their riding skills haven’t deterio-rated, or those wishing to take further advanced riding tests such as RoSPA, or those preparing for qualification as an EAM Observer.

Participation is entirely voluntary and those taking part do not have to join each ride. Training is for your benefit and enjoyment. It is not a manda-tory requirement that you go on to take a RoSPA test but for those wishing to do so, a pre-test assessment of your riding may be arranged. To ensure the highest possible standard, EAM Senior Observers or EAM Observers holding a RoSPA Gold standard will undertake the training.

You will not be riding in one large group. Where possible you will be riding with an Observer and one other Full Member giving you the opportunity to have a 'rest' while the other Full Member is being observed. We will en-deavour to match riding experience, ability and aspirations, any mismatching being addressed at the first refreshment stop.

Routes are carefully selected and vary from course to course. A route plan will be sent by email or post a few days before the day to enable familia-risation, but your Observer will have ridden the route a week or so prior to the day. Routes will be approximately 150-200 miles duration for summer months but may be reduced for the final course due to failing light. Wherever possible, routes will be simple to follow and cover a wide variety of roads. The first refreshment stop will typically be within 40/50 miles.

Nigel Barton spills the

beans….


My parents bought me my first motorcycle when I was ten

years old. It was a 98cc James that did not run, I am sure they

never thought for one minute I would get it going… But I did

even though it was of low power it soon turned the back gar-

den into a right mess!

Over the next few years I had all sorts of old trials and scram-

bles bikes mainly of the Greeves mark. I moved onto riding in

Grass Track events in the 70’s first with a 250cc and then a

500cc JAP engined machine. I had various mopeds and then

250cc road bikes but never took my test—that was to come

later. Off road riding seemed to be of most interest to me

over the next few years competing in Enduros, Pre 65 Moto-

cross and trials events. Unfortunately an accident in Wales

2003 when I shattered both wrists put a stop to any more off

road events.

I passed my motorcycle test the day before my 40th birthday,

and then got involved in CBT training. After giving up the DSA

CBT ticket I decided to join an advanced group and get some

training with a view to passing an advanced test.

I joined the group and passed my IAM test in 2006 and since

then I have really enjoyed our groups social rides and the ex-

cellent training given by a great bunch of like minded people.

On the CCM, about an hour

before I broke both wrists!


Chris Reed had this

great idea that I

was potentially

observer material

so the training

started over again

and I passed my

observer test in

March 2010 and in

June this year my

RoSPA test at Gold.

I have been training

now for about 15

years. I have been a

committee member

for two years now

and really enjoy

putting something

back into the

group.

Plans for 2012?

Looking forward to

seeing a bit of the

west country and

would love to tour

Ireland.

And we all want to

know… favourite

bit of kit?
