762 THE IRISH MONTHIILY
Early Autunin
He walked in the cool of the morning, Leaves turning, sun shining,
Wind combilng the summer-dried grasses, Trees burning, like candlesticks brightening ; Iooking up through their luminous shadow
He saw that their branches were yellowing, Beneath the green fluttering canopies, Leaves goldening, falling and following.
And as each faint rustle subsided Of leaf from the brittle twig drifting, And leaf through the silent air sailing, And leaf to the leafy earth whispering, He knew that all joy had its fullness, All creatures their time of departure, All candles their time of out-burning, All summers their leaf-falling autumin.
And he wished that in him there might kindle
A flame like the bright-burning branches, A love to consume and transmute him To gold at the time of his passing.
