George Meldrum was born in Scotland. He married Angélique Catherine Chapoton, daughter of Jean

Baptiste Chapoton and Félicité Cécire circa 1782. She was born 1 June1769 in Détroit. They had ten

children. She was buried 4 March 1815 in the cemetery of the Church farm. He died 9 April 1817 in

Détroit [Denissen, Vol II, p. 813]. There is no evidence that he ever lived in Monroe County.

George Meldrum, a Detroit merchant, was one of several people who obtained land on Rivière-aux-

Roches (Stony Creek) in 1786 and 1788 [Tucker and Au, p. 109].

1772 in Assumption. He married Geneviève Bernard, daughter of Joseph Bernard and Geneviève

Joseph Momtminy, son of Louis Jean Montminy and Agathe Amable Prudhomme, was born 23 July

Marriage of François Navarre and Marie Suzor

She was born 24 May 1772 in Assumption / Sandwich. They had 14 children. They were both buried 3

October 1826 from St. Antoine, River Raisin [Denissen, Vol. II, p. 889].

François Navarre dit Tchigoy (the proclaimed “founding father” of Monroe, Michigan), with brother

Jacques Navarre, settled on the south side of the River in June of 1785 [Tucker and Au, p. 109].

“On September 14, 1786, François Navarre obtained a piece of land from Chief Eskiby on the north side

of the River Raisin (near downtown Monroe today).”1 Tucker and Au noted that the site granted to

Navarre was not used to the Church and that the 1789 Navarre-Anderson Trade post was built on this

property.

On 15 October 1788, François Navarre dit Tchigoy was one of those who petitioned Bishop Jean François

Hubert, coadjutor of Québec, for a priest for the settlement of River Raisin [Tucker and Au, pp. 111-112].

Prior to 1 July 1796, François Navarre owned 600 arpents on the River Raisin known as private claim

#498. His property contained a house, barn, orchard, and a grist mill. About 90 arpents were under

cultivation. François Navarre filed the claim [American State Papers, p. 463].

Frans Navarre was enumerated as a resident of Raisin River in the 1796 census [Russell, p. 66].

Navarre – Godet dite Marentette Family:

François Navarre, son of Robert Navarre and Marie Lotman dite Barrois, was born 19 November 1759

in Détroit. He married Marie Louise Godet dite Marentette, daughter of René Godet dite Marentette

and Catherine Campeau, 26 February 1781 in Ste Anne du Détroit. Their marriage was part of the

records that were borrowed by Tanguay and subsequently lost. Denissen reconstructed the missing

records by consulting Tanguay’s Dictionary. Her birth date is not known. They had 12 children. The

first eight were born in Détroit; their remaining children were born in River Raisin [Denissen, Vol. II, pp.

888-889].

Robert Navarre dit Tonton and brother, François Marie Navarre dit Heutreau or Utreau, secured land from

the Potawatomi Chief Chaholrenabet on the north side of the River Raisin measuring eight arpents in

width [Tucker and Au, p. 109].

Prior to 1 July 1796, Eutreau Navarre owned 160 arpents on the River Raisin known as private claim #53

until he sold it to John Anderson who filed the claim [American State Papers, p. 316].

Navarre – Descompt dite Labadie Family:

Isidore Navarre, son of Robert Navarre and Marie Louise Marsac, was born 19 August 1768 in Détroit.

He married Marie Françoise Descompt dite Labadie, daughter of Alexis Descompt dit Labadie and

Marie Fançoise Robert, 18 June 1795 in Ste Anne du Détroit [www.Ancestry.com, Drouin Collection, D,

Détroit, Ste-Anne, 1780-1801, Image 241].

Assumption / Sandwich. They had seven children. She was buried 4 March 1819 from St. Antoine,

River Raisin [Denissen, Vol. II, pp. 889-890].

He married Marie Anne Vessière dite Laferté, daughter of Louis Vessière dit Laferté and Catherine

Esprit dite Champagne, 3 May 1823 in Ste Anne du Détroit. She was born 21 April 1779 in Détroit.

They did not have any children [Denissen, Vol. II, p. 889].

Jean Mrie Navarre was enumerated as a resident of Raisin River in the 1796 census [Russell, p. 67].

Navarre – Bourdeau Family:

Robert Navarre, son of Robert Navarre and Marie Louise Marsac, was born 4 March 1765 on the

Navarre farm on the southeast coast of Détroit. He married Genevieve Bourdeau, daughter of Joseph

Bourdeau and Marie Louise Clermont, and widow of Amable Cosme, 14 April 1809 in in a civil

ceremony in Monroe. Their marriage was ratified 23 July 1810 in St. Antoine, River Raisin. She was

born 13 November 1767 in Assumption / Sandwich. They had two children. He is believed to have died

during the War of 1812. She was buried 21 December 1829 in River Raisin [Denissen, Vol. II, p. 889].

Robert Navarre dit Tonton and brother, François Marie Navarre dit Heutreau or Utreau, secured land from

the Potawatomi Chief Chaholrenabet on the north side of the River Raisin measuring eight arpents in

width [Tucker and Au, p. 109].

Prior to 1 July 1796, Robert alias Touton Navarre owned approximately 160 arpents on the River Raisin

known as private claim #58. He filed the claim [American State Papers, p. 318].
