EARTHQUAKE

An Earthquake which is also known as a tremor is the consequence of a sudden discharge of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves.

The seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type, nature and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time.

PHENOMENONCaused by tectonic plate movements.Movement of these tectonic plates causes

stresses to fabricate up at weak points.

Need for Study

•Multi-storied buildings have become a part of the day to day development. So the construction of the Multi-storied buildings gained importance, their method of constructions also gained importance.

•A multi-storey building is a building that has simple floors above the ground in the building.

•Multi-storey buildings aim to increase the area of the building without increasing the area of the land the building is built on, hence saving land and, in most cases, money (depending on material used and land prices in the area).

Objective of the Study

• This project describes method of designing a multi-storied commercial building. The scope behind presenting this project is to learn the concept of construction, and to design an elegant, safe and durable structure with economy. The most prominent convenient method is by using STAAD Pro.

• STAAD Pro is one of the first software applications in the world made for the purpose of helping the structural engineers to automate their work, to eliminate the tedious and lengthy procedures of manual methods. STAAD Pro is general purpose structural analysis and design program with applications primarily in the building industry- commercial buildings, bridges and highway structures, industrial structures, chemical plant structures, dams, retaining walls, turbine foundations, culverts and other embedded structures, etc. The total design analysis of this project is done by STAAD Pro-V8i.

METHODOLOGY

METHOD OF ANALYSIS.

• The analysis of the loads on a structure can be done by moment distribution method and stiffness matrix method.

• Since this method is very hard to be calculated manually as it takes a lot of time.

• Therefore structural software “STAAD Pro V8i” is adopted for the design analysis.

3 Steps to Reach our Goal

• Preparing input file.

• Sending the input file to the analysis/design engine.

• Reading the results and verifying them.

APPLICATIONS OF METHODOLOGY

STAAD PRO is the acronym of Structural Aided Analysis and Design Program. It is the leading structural analysis and design software now-a-days. STAAD PRO is designed for engineers, by engineers who understand the process of modeling, analysis and designing of structure

In STAAD PRO, there are three activities which are to be achieved by the project. They are:

1. Model Generation.2. Calculation to obtain the analytical results.3. Result Verification.

Page 16: Earthquake (2)

METHODS OF CREATING THE MODEL

There are two methods of creating the structure data:

1. Command File Method2. Graphic Model Generation Mode

DESCRIPTION OF THE MODEL

Page 18: Earthquake (2)

SUMMARYThe present project work is done in the following steps:Creating a structure model.

Generating the structural geometry, specifying member properties, materials constants, load and design specifications, etc.

Visualization and verification of the model geometry.

Running the STAAD analysis to perform analysis and design.

Verification of results-graphically and numerically.

Report generating and printing.

Structural designing by using STAAD results.

CONCLUSIONAfter analysing the structure in seismic analysis using STAAD pro v8i, it gives results very rapidly in less time with more accuracy. The reinforcement variations are within allowable limits, so we adopt.STAAD Pro V8i for analysis and designThe variations of shear force, bending moment and stresses at point of applications can be known I graphical outputs.STAAD pro V8i gives various bar combinations based on user requirements.STAAD Pro V8i shows displacement of structure graphically, for required load combinations in very less time.It supports multi-material design codes such as timber, steel, cold-formed steel, concrete an aluminium. Its dynamic and soil structure interaction capabilities along with our exhaustive design output sets.Using STAAD pro we can analyze and design the structure for loads and load combinations for boundary condition.Designing of our project in STAAD pro V8i, it reduces the time, manual calculation, and It gives output in very short time.
