Pangea

• Alfred Wegner’s theory consisted on one supercontinent called Pangea which consisted with the North American, South American, Euraisin, African, Indian, Australian, and Antartican plates.

The plates affecting the U.S.

• The North American, Jaun De Fuca, Coco’s plates.

• If you count the Caribbean then the Caribbean plate.

Florida vs California earthquakes

• California is located on the North American plate and Florida isn’t located on a plate, and California is moving left on the North American plate.

Most Destructive Earthquake

• The most destructive earthquake in history was located in Shaanxi, China

• It happened on June 23, 2001.

• There were 830,000 deaths

3 Plate Boundaries

• One is a divergent boundary and it happens when two plates move away from each other. A convergent boundary in which two plates move toward each other. A transform boundary is when two plates slide past each other.

What are tsunamis

• Tsunamis are waves caused by moved water from earthquakes.

• They move about 600 miles an hour

The two energy waves

• They are the Primary waves and secondary waves. Primary waves travel through all matter and secondary waves travel only through solids. Secondary waves travel slower which means primary waves travel the fastest.

Difference between 7.2 and 6.2 earthquakes

• The difference between a 7.2 and a 6.2 is a 7.2 releases 32 x more energy then a 6.2.

• A 7.2 releases 10 x more ground motion than a 6.2 earthquake.

• Refraction and reflection seismology can be used in geophysics to locate layers of varying density which can be used to locate underground hydrocarbons in the oil and gas companies.

• It has also given us information on the internal structure and state of matter in the middle of the Earth

Last weeks earthquakes

• The last two earthquakes to happen were both located in the Scotia sea.

• They were 7.8 and 6.8.

Scientists and predicting earthquakes

• No scientists can’t predict earthquakes

• Seismologists are trying even with the risk of a certain fault zone.

Earthquakes occurring

• You find it by using a process called trilateraton.
