EAST ANGLIAN CANCER REGISTRYEAST ANGLIAN CANCER REGISTRY
Problems in moving towards automation
Automated cancer registration is….
“Where streams of data about an individual case of cancer are received electronically from different sources and are processed by a computer system to:
create a new patient and a new tumour OR
create a new tumour for an existing patient OR
update an existing tumour for an existing patient
without the need for human intervention.”
Areas of concern:•No electronic data
•Accuracy of data
•Non-hospital data
•Patient identification
•Problem resolution
JCIS
•Addenbrooke’s, Hinchingbrooke, Peterborough
Dendrite
•Norfolk & Norwich, James Paget
No News From….
•Bedford, Ipswich, West Suffolk, Luton & Dunstable, Papworth, Kings Lynn
•NCDS - just a summary
•Who records the information in it ?
•Are they trained in cancer coding ?
•The data must be of high quality and consistent
•What about secondaries ?
Other sources e.g.:
•GP Notes
•Consultants with private patients
Notification
•Death cards
•Patient affairs office
•Pathology reports
Patient Identification:
•Use of New NHS Number
•Wrongly allocated numbers
•What if they can’t find the number for a patient ?
•Hospital number
•Two numbers for the same patient
•The same number used by two people
Problem Resolution:
If what we are sent is inadequate for a case and we need to “eye-ball” the notes:
•Will they still exist ?
•Will we be able to get at them ?
•How ?
Bearing in mind that it is nearly lunchtime…..
Any Questions ?
