Community Service Learning Centers……..A Critical Component to Achieving our Mission

• All CSLCs are ECU owned and operated - intentionally located in areas of need – based on statewide and community needs assessments

• Faculty, staff are all employees of the SODM and all live in the communities they serve

• Partnerships are key – primary health care – and governmental leadership

• Community engaged: Community Advisory Board at each CSLC, participate in health fairs, health screening………are part of the community

• Provide full range of general dental services plus provide a dental home

• Provide care across the state – sites up to 450+ miles apart

• All CSLCs are on same student/patient/financial management system -heavily dependent on technology and VTC and utilize teledentistry

• Economic Impact – annually $1M+ at each location

Community Service Learning Centers……..The Educational Component

• Medical model of education vs. traditional dental model of education

• Each CSLC has 11.5 Faculty & Staff, 4 D4 students and 2 AEGD residents

• D-4 students rotate to 3 different CSLCs for three 8 week rotations – each D4 student spends 60% of their D4 year in the CSLCs

• Students live in three different communities and gain a first-hand awareness the social mission of the school and their impact on the communities they serve

• Gain experience with primary care partners

• AEGD Residents live in the communities all year

• D4 students can perform some clinical skills assessments at the CSLCs
