IN MEMORIAM

On January 24, 1951, a heart attack took the

life of Bill Nick, mathematics teacher at Shaw for

twenty-one years.

Mr. Nick is remembered for his thorough com

mand of and exacting standards for his science. In

addition to his classroom work, he served as assistant

football and track coach in his early years at Shaw.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Mr.

Nick, whose passing is a great personal loss to

former students and to the school.

FOOTBALL SONG

Black and red forge ahead

In the battles they have led,

When our Shaw boys come rolling along.

Back them up with a shout

That ten thousand throats give out,

When the Shawboys come rolling along.

Chorus-

Then it's high, high, hee, on to vicrory,

Shout out their praises loud and strong.

RAH! RAH;

They will fight, fight, fight,

With courage and with might,

See our Shaw boys come rolling along.

KEEP THEM ROLLING!

ALMA MATER

Sing with praise to old Shaw High School,

Glorify her name.

In the hall of school day victories

Shaw has won her fame;

While at war with grime Defeat

She learned to play the game

Glorify her name.

Sing with praise to old Shaw High School,

Sing with praise to old Shaw High School,

Alma Mater fair;

Sharing sadness, offering gladness,

Tendering every care.

Teachers, students, fathers, mothers,

All in tribute share.

Sing with praise to old Shaw High School,

Alma Mater fair.

MR. WAYNE C. BLOUGH

Ending his third year as principal of Shaw, Mr. Blough has administered a big change in the school's educational system. This change is the fifty-five minute period, seven-period day, and the elimination of all minor subjects. Mr. Blough thinks highly of this system and remarks, "The longer periods give students necessary supervised study; if subjects are important enough to be taught in a high school they should be major subjects."

Mr. Blough received a Bachelor of Science degree at Wooster College, where he graduated in 1929, and a Master's degree from Ohio State. His two sons, Jim and Jack, are now attending Wooster, while his daughter, Nancy, is in the eighth grade at Kirk.

BOARD OF EDUCATION

The East Cleveland Board of Education meets regularly at the Board of Education

rooms on the second Monday of every month. Their meetings except for the executive

sessions are open to the public.

A few of their duties are to provide for the maintenance and operation of the schools.

The Board of Education adopts the rules and regulations to govern both the employees

and students. There are four advisory committees: education, welfare and public relations,

business, and finance. The superintendent makes reports concerning the needs, conditions,

and efficiency of the schools.

The present members of the Board of Education are Mr. George N. Nelson, President;

Mrs. Marian S. Morgan, Vice President; Mrs. Karl N. Brown, Mr. Lawrence B. Keith,

and Mr. Cecil S. Stonebraker. Dr. 0. J. Korb is the Superintendent of Schools.

MR. NELSON F. LEIST

Mr. Leist came to Shaw High School from Marietta High School, Marietta, Ohio. In 1947 he was appointed assistant principal and dean of boys. This appointment came after he had served as head of the commercial department for nineteen years. While in the commercial department he taught law and bookkeeping; he was also in charge of all ticket sales. Mr. Leist now has charge of Shaw stadium.

The boys have become very well acquainted with Mr. Leist in the last few years, as it is necessary for them to go to him for absence and tardy excuses. The attendance records for the entire school are kept under his supervision.

After Mr. Leist puts in a full day at Shaw he finds time to help plan signs and the seating arrangements for the National Air Races. He also plays golf and is a very good bridge player. You will find Mr. Leist at most school activities.

MISS PROVO

Miss Lucille Provo has become well acquainted with every Shaw girl since her arrival three years ago. Before coming to Shaw to serve as Dean of Girls, she taught home economics at Patrick Henry for one year and at Shaw for four years. She then became head of the home economics department at Kirk Junior High School where she taught until her recent return to Shaw.

Miss Provo's duties including checking the girls' attendance and uniforms, teaching home economics classes, and helping girls with their personal problems. Last year she was made co-sponsor of the College Club.

Although Miss Provo is kept busy with her work at school, she also finds time occasionally for such hobbies as needlework and coin collecting.

MR. HUNTER

As Guidance Director Mr. Howard K. Hunter is known to every Shaw srudent. Since coming to Shaw in 1915, he has given friendly advice to srudents concerning their high school courses and their futures, whether they involve jobs or colleges. He sends transcripts of high school work to colleges and makes arrangements for the srudems to meet representatives from the various colleges.

Mr. Hunter is the last authority on graduation credits and his duties also include conducting tests, such as the Ohio State Scholarship Test. His responsibility for the srudent does not terminate with graduation, as he is also frequently called upon to give information and make recommendations for jobs.

In addition to these and numerous other duties, this busy man has recently added that of co-sponsor of the College Club to his list. He has done much toward putting this club on its feet during irs first full year.

MAIN OFFICE STAFF

Few people realize the amount of work done by the office staff. A large percentage of the important school work goes through main offices and is expertly handled by Miss Crane, Mrs. Hoge, and Mrs. Kline.

In addition ro being Mr. Blough's secretary, Mrs. Hoge rakes charge of managing the routine of the office. Mrs. Kline is in charge of supplies ordered for the school.

To help Mrs. Hoge and Mrs. Kline there are rwo monitors in the office every period. They take messages, answer the telephone, and take care of people at the counter.

All six-week grades pass through the office before they are sent ro the various homeroom teachers. Another interesting fact is that the records of every student who has ever attended Shaw are .filed away in the basement.

Miss Crane, who assists Mr. Leist in the attendance office, keeps the attendance records for both the pupils and teachers. She makes out the weekly report for the superintendent and the monthly report for the state. She also helps with the scheduling.

There is a moniror to help Miss Crane every period except the fifth. First and second period there are rwo monirors.

HE WEARS A UNIFORM TOO

Everyone at Shaw recognizes the gray uniform worn daily by our head cusrod1an, Mr. Dominic Petri. Mr. Petri has been at Shaw for three years; he and his men have been doing a wonderful job keeping Shaw High in condition.

The heating system at Shaw hears both Shaw and Prospect. This hear is circulated through air ducts, and is blown into the classrooms by three fans leading into different pans of the building.

The hearing of the schools is controlled by Mr. Petri, a licensed fireman, for there is a great deal of responsibility connected with the hearing of the school.

Mr. Petti has six very capable men working with him who handle the job of cleaning the school. These men are Sam Daniels (head cafeteria custOdian), Norman Dea~on, Arthur Carmosino, Mike DeSanto, Nicholas l D'Amato, Carl Carlson, and Sam Petrueci; these men have certain jobs to do, and come in at different hours during the day, this way someone is always here when you need him.

LET'S EAT

When you become completely famished around noon your thoughts turn tOward our cafeteria.

Served tO you by the women under Mrs. Ruth Kerr's supervision, the food is especially prepared tO please student and faculty alike.

Mrs. Cowan and Mrs. Emma Lass serve the finished product, while Mrs. Mabel Carlson, Mrs. Marie Crawford, Mrs. Pearl Donibi, and Mrs. Marg1ret Stahre (head cook), prepare the meals.

Cashiers are Mrs. Sylvia Whalley, Mrs. Mary Brandt, and Mrs. Bridie Murray.

Finally the dished are cleaned and thoroughly washed by Mrs. Berry Criner, Mrs. Margaret Miller, Mrs. Ruth Brockway, and Miss Alice Munro.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The Student CounciL a symbol of srudent parrcipation in the management of Shaw High School, is the promoter of numerous school activities. The council con:;ists of 1ts four officers and one representative from each ho:neroom. The officers for the first semester were: President, L01s Radomsky, Vice President, Bob Gibson. ecretary, usan Struggles: Treasurer, Dave Baumgartner ~econd semester officers were President, Dan Ferensen, Vice President. ~usan Struggles: Secretary. Joe Lee Fuller, Treasurer, Tom Kissack.

E:J.ch officer of the Student Council has cerram duties which he must fulfill. The President presides at all council meetings and general assemblies and head the executive committee. The Vice President is m charge of the monitor system, a very important function in our ~chool. The Secretary records the minutes of the Student Council meetings and attends tO all correspondence. The Treasurer keeps and accurate account of all the Student Council funds and gives regular reports of its financial status.

Once every year the Counol has an "evening out." This year 28 members of the Council had dinner at the Southern Tavern and then saw the comedy, "Harvey," at the Playhouse.

The Student Council itself, performs several duties for our general benefit. It wpervi~es the game room, selects the noon movies, operates the lost and Found, conducts morning broadcasts having a Student Council member appointed broadcaster for a period of two weeks. Thus the Student Council gives to the students practical experience in self government.

HI-Y

Hi-Y plays an important part in the lives of many Shaw boys. The six chapters in the Shaw Hi-Y are Amigos, Argus, Delphi, Halcyon, Mazda, and Tala. These chapters have their own football and basketball teams which compere with each other. This year Amigos had the best football team. Halcyon had the best basketball ream. Besides football and basketball, there are many other sports activities, such as game tournaments, swimming meers, track meets and baseball. Hi-Y sponsors dances, and the various chapters have hayrides and barn parties.

The first semester officers of Hi-Y were: President, Bill Gaines; VicePresident, Danny Kramer; Secretary, Chuck Rainger; Treasurer, Barney Miller; Chaplain, Bruce Reeves.

SOPHISTICATES AND STRING ENSEMBLE The Sophisticates, haw's new singing group, were organized last year. Their purpose

was to provide a small instrumental group to take our for performances which did nor call for the whole choir.

The Sophisticates have entertained at many affairs, some of their being: Kiwanis Talent Show, TV Block Party, Chambers P.-T. A., Tarpon Club, Shaw P.-T. A. Christmas program, and for a blind group at the Sirocis Club.

When they were first begun they went under the title of Shaw Swing Group. Later, however, at the Kiwanis Talent Show, they adopted their present name, the Sophisticates. Membership is limited to eight plus the accompanists.

The String Ensemble was also formed last year although it actually starred at Kirk and was just re-organized last winter. The Ensemble was started in answer to numerous requests and calls from local civic groups for dinner music at their meetings.

Their engagements have been quite varied. They include: Open House at the East Cleveland Baptist Church, Shaw High football banquet, Y Mother and Son banquet at the Church of the Cross, and the Friendship Pot Luck Dinner.

Their instruments, which are of course all stringed instruments, are violins, viola, cello, and bass.

THE DRAMATIC CLUB Ever since Shaw has had an audicorium, there has been a dramatic club.

For nearly fifty years this club has been open to all students interested in dramatics, whether in acting, working behind stage, or merely watching plays.

This year the play production class, which meets second period each day under the direction of Miss Lois Dean, presented a play entitled "The Solution." Try-outs were held for another play, ''Nobody Sleeps," which was presented at one of the regular Thursday afternoon meetings.

The damatic club also sponsors both January and June Class Day Exercises. This year's officers were:

THE STAGE CREW

Behind the stage at every assembly or program, the stage crew is at work. This group mee:s as a class seventh period daily under the direction of Miss Lois Dean and does anything from scrubbing floors to building sets.

Some of the duties of this group are operating lights, painting and putting up scenery, and taking care of stage props. The girls in the class have charge of the costumes, upholstering furniture, filing and typing scripts, art work, and hunting for hard-to-find props.

This year's stage manager was Art Parker, who has been on the stage crew for three years. Elver Scone has also completed his third year with the group.

VISUAL EDUCATION

The Visual Education Department was divided into two groups last year. The noon movies were supervised by Mr. George E. Todd, while the classroom films were under the supervision of Mr. Alfred Dolan.

During the lunch penod the movies were shown by Charles Kraus and Donald Rushin. These boys ran the sixteen millimeter projectOr which is owned by the school. The student council selecred the films shown at noon. Usually they lasted about eighteen minutes.

John Smith operates the morning broadcast while the others run the sixteen millimeter projector, the slide machine and the lanterns. These people also operate the wire recorder.

The boys, while seeing many different films, also learn to set up and operate the various pr.ojecrors which gives them experience outside the regular curriculum.

JUNIOR COUNCIL ON WORLD AFFAIRS

"The aim of the Junior Council on World Affairs is tO discuss the problems which are confronting the United Nations and the world," remarked Elaine Katz, President of the club.

Under the direction of Miss Lois Crank, the Council held weekly meetings, where discussions of such problems as Capitalism versus Communism, the Korean Situation, the United Nations' Flag Code, and Women's Rights took place.

The greatest achievement of the club, since its existence, was the purchasing of a United Nations' flag for Shaw. The flag, in certificate form, was presented tO the President of the Student Council at this year's Armistice Day program.

"World Affairs Are Your Affairs" is the motto of the Junior Council. This is well lived-up-tO by the club, which has considered most of the important issues or problems which the world faces.

Vice-President Tom Marshall, and Secretary-Treasurer Judy Keller have helped tO guide the group along with the President and the Advisor.

Records; D .. ncing! Ping pong! Cards! Checkers! Shuffleboard; These things constitute only a part of the fun available during the lunch periods and after school in Shaw's new recreation room.

The game room was set up by a committee of the student council in September of 1949. The founders were Jack Reulbach, Carolyn Miller, Sue Struggles, Tom Litwiler, and Duane Gerasmos. AI Gray gave this place of recreation its name, "the Cardinal's Nest."

A two-cent ticket buys a srudent a period full of recreation and enjoyment. Besides the music and games, are exchange papers from other schools in the city and the country, popular magazines, and a bulletin board containing news and current events from the school that would be of interest to all.

The committee this year decorated the walls of the room with group picrures of rhe Shaw football and baseball teams throughout the years.

AFTER THE GAME

The Shaw High Canteen is playing an important part in rhe lives of Shaw students. Three years ago the canteen was opened to Shaw students on Saturday nights to provide entertainment, which included both dancing and a floor show. It has expanded greatly and is now in operation every week, giving way only to school activities.

This year the canteen opened with the football season, providing a place for both friend and foe alike to dance, get acquanired and see entertainment, all in one place.

The entertainment is usually selected from the students of Shaw or alumni. Music has been by recordings, bur just recently an orchestra was tried and proved very successful.

A meeting is held every week at one of the homes of rhe 16 members. They plan dances and larger affairs, such as Hobble Gobble Hop at Thanksgiving, New Years and Valentine Day Dances and many others. Also there is an Advisory Board which consists of Mr. Blough, Miss Provo, Mr. Hunter, Dr. Meyers, Karl Brown and "Buck" Weaver, the chief of police.

November officers were: Dan Kramer. President; Don Sexton, Vice-President; Sheila Ganey, Secretary; and Tom Greenland, Treasurer.

LIFE SAVING

This year twenty-five girls completed the Red Cross life saving course taught by Miss Alice Juringus with lois Rhods assisting. Before the lessons started each girl had ro swim ten lengths of the pool. The class, which mer every Thursdays after school during the spring, learned the various holds, approaches, and carries necessary in making a water rescue. An essay on artificial respiration was also required for this course. At last the final rests were taken with Tom Parham serving as the victim.

Those who received their junior badges were: Gail Ranney, Ann Roper, Roberta Wallace, Nancy Williamson, Rosemary Zahner, and Terry Tucker.

Senior badges were given ro Joanne Becker, Diane Benjamin, Mary Ellen Brophy, Alice Cameron, Jean Collmer, Mary Hoffman, Nancy Hood, Jackie Hunt, Evelyn Kiraly, Marlene Knoph, Ruby laubaugh, Sally Marsh, linda Mehnert, Dolores Owen, Mary Parsons, Dorothy Polk, Janice Wilson, and lois Rhodes.

These girls are now eligible to guard at any pool under Red Cross regulation.

TARPON

Tarpon Club meetings, under the guidance of Miss Alice Juringus, are held in Shaw pool to promote the murual swimming interests of the girls.

At the end of every semester tryouts are held in which the candidates for membership take a difficult swimming rest, supervised by the tarpon members. They are graded on their ability ro perform the various requirements. At a meeting, the members vote and the girls who passed the rest with the highest number of points are invited to join. At their initiation, the new members present informal water skits followed by a formal candlelight ceremony.

New officers are elected each semester at a por-luk supper. The fall semester officers are: President, Carolyn Miller; Vice President, Betty Fleischer; Secretary-Treasurer, Evelyn Kiraly.
