East Durham Music Festival 2009

welcome

I am pleased to welcome you to this year’s East Durham Music Festival, which promises its usual blend of live music and talented entertainers.Previously organised by the former District of Easington Council, I amdelighted that Durham County Council has kept this much-loved festivalalive, for what is now its seventeenth year. The event, which will run from Saturday, 3 October to Sunday, 22November, offers an exciting line-up of musical talent and as such makesit difficult to pick out only a few highlights. However, a special mention this year should be given to East DurhamCollege, which moved to its new campus earlier this year. The college’s Lubetkin Theatre with its state-of-the-art facilities offers aprogramme to please most musical tastes, including the eagerlyanticipated Dance for The King (6 November) featuring the flamenco-inspired guitar skills of Paul Donnelly. Many of the festival’s performers are stars in their own musical genres.Headlining this year’s Seaham Musicfest (25 October) is the renownedAmerican blues singer Michael Roach and stalwart of the British folkscene Box Fox.For fans of brass you can’t better Mark Bousie and his fellow soloistsfrom The Fairey Band (25 October), however, if you enjoy the best ofworld music then you shouldn’t miss one of India’s leading traditional folkensembles Pallab Kirtania (11 October). The festival of course is deeply rooted in our local communities and assuch offers many opportunities to sample the best of our home-grownmusical talent, both professional and amateur, with performers rangingfrom classical ensembles to rock bands and musical theatre groups. In addition, following a festival tradition, there is a host of workshops forboth budding and more experienced musicians to take part in.So as you can see, once again East Durham Music Festival offers plentyfor all to enjoy.

Eunice Huntington, Cabinet Member for Healthier Coummunities and Culture.
