*** BREAKING NEWS….. OUR COLLEGE CLEANER ROD BIGGS WILL SHAVE HIS HEAD AND BEARD TOMORROW
IF WE CAN RAISE $5000!!!! ***
In breaking news, College cleaner and local identity Rod Biggs has today committed to shaving his head and beard
at tomorrow’s greatest shave if we can raise over $5000, before the event. We are currently about $1000- short
of this amount and have 24 hours to meet our target.
Rod has had his beard for that long that I do not believe that any of his children have seen him without it and I am
worried that his wife may not recognise him when he arrives home at the end of tomorrow!
Good on you for being a great sport Rod!!!
East Loddon – Greatest Shave!
Tomorrow we see the conclusion of
Cancer Awareness Week at East Loddon
and what better way to conclude the
week, than with a big event! Lunchtime
will be shortened and the end of the day
assembly time extended so that the
heads of a variety of staff and students
can be shaved for a terrific cause. If you
are able to attend the event, please do
so. The greatest shave takes place in the
College gym from 2:30pm.
New P-4 Sub-School Leader in 2019
Before the Term 3 holidays, the College advertised for an internal P-4 sub-school
leader for the 2019 school year. After a process of application, shortlisting and
interview, I am very pleased to be able to announce that Mr Jackson Clayton has
been appointed to this role. Jackson has been a valued member of staff for the
past 2 years, teaching mainly Mathematics and Digital Technologies to senior
classes. What most parents and community members would not realise is that
Mr Clayton has actually predominately taught in primary classes. In fact, he has only taught in the secondary area
during his time at East Loddon, teaching only in the primary years for his previous 5 years of educating.
Mr Clayton has taught in a range of Victorian schools as well as in the Northern Territory, being offered
P-4 co-ordination roles before returning to Victoria. Mr Clayton is a very impressive educator and we thoroughly
look forward to him leading our Junior Sub-School in the absence of Mr Vernon, who will be taking leave in 2019.
University Visit For Our Year 7 and 8 Students
On Monday Year 7 and 8 students visited La Trobe University in Bendigo as part of the School Partnerships
Program. Students spent the day exploring the university campus and learning about what studying in a
university setting might be like. Students undertook a variety of activities with La Trobe University students
including a race around the campus and a Science and Engineering workshop. Year 7 students talked with LTU
students about their university studies and life as students, while Year 8’s completed a career quiz and began
thinking about potential career pathways. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and many are now enthused
about the idea of university studies in their future!

) 2nd Hand Uniform Request
We have had a few requests for second-hand uniform of late and after selling almost all items at the recent
College Fete, I am placing a ‘call-out’ to any families who have uniform items that could be donated to the
College. If you or your family has any item of uniform that has been outgrown by your child, please consider
donating this back to the College so that it can be used once again. Any donations can be forwarded to the
College Office.
Termite Works To Begin Shortly
Building works for the termite affected areas of the College (VCE room, Home Economics room, Wellbeing Office
and College Canteen) will begin on Monday 26th November and will conclude towards the end of the Christmas
holidays. During this time the College will not be able to access these rooms at all and provisions will be made to
accommodate this. College Council began talks around the canteen, which we will not have access to during the
building works and in coming weeks we will make alternative arrangements which will be communicated to
families.
First Aid Course For Students and Community Members – Running From The College
Murray Mallee Training will be running a First Aid Course at our College on Tuesday 26th November for interested
students and community members. Participants will need to ensure that they have a USI number, and the course
will cost $105- per participant. Please have a think about whether you would like to take part in this course, as
names will be requested shortly.
Participants will also need to complete a booklet and associated forms prior to the course.
Go Beast Loddon!!!
A group of male staff members have formed a basketball team
known as BEAST LODDON and joined in a competition at
Bendigo Stadium. Our abilities range from ‘absolute novice’ to
‘Air-Jordan’ (with Mr Young actually attempting a slam-dunk dur-
ing our first week), but we are sure to have a great deal of fun!
During our first week we were placed in division 2 and actually
scored a win!
Thanks are extended to all who have supported the Cancer Awareness Week activities and fundraisers this week!

Tremendous Effort Keira and Georgia!
Both Keira and Georgia did an absolutely
amazing job last Saturday, lifting for half an
hour at Bendigo RockHard Kettlebells in the
Kettlebell Marathon Australia - Ultimate
Girevik Cup Stage 3.
Results - Women's Snatch event: Keira L
with a 10kg kettlebell - 452 reps - Overall
winner of Women's Snatch
Results - Womens One Arm Long Cycle event: Georgia W with a 16kg kettlebell -
360 reps - setting a PB
It was reported that both girls "smashed" it out of the park and were exciting to
watch. What an amazing effort!

Prep Sounds in Focus
This week the Preps are learning the long vowel sound ‘a’. This is made in a number of ways in our English lan-
guage: the ‘a’ as in ‘baby,, the ‘ai’ as in ‘snail’, the ‘ay’ as in ‘tray’ and the split digraph ‘a-e’ as in ‘take’. The little
Sound Waves rhyme to reinforce the sound is ‘Snails play’.
Prep Words To Fluency
The words this week are ‘should’, ‘could’ and ‘would’. In these words the ‘ou’ makes the ‘oo’ sound as in ‘book’.
It’s a tricky language to learn, thus the importance of visual memory to support phonemic spelling.
College Athletics Sports
This coming Thursday our students are participating in our Ath-
letics sports. We encourage all our students to fully engage in
the House spirit by dressing in their team colours and bringing
streamers and the like to build team spirit. We also look forward
to seeing you on the day. Please remember to name all clothing,
especially hats, provide lots of cool drinking water and a sun-
screen suitable for your child’s needs. Remember that sun-
screen deteriorates over time and loses effectiveness.
Below are pictures of Long house team members practicing their
House chants with great enthusiasm.
Literacy Hints
Levels are an important guide when teachers are matching students to texts (Just right
books) and for reporting progress against expected Sate Benchmarks but it is important
not to chase levels at the expense of everything else. It is important that children develop
a love of reading if they are to become ‘lifelong readers’. Children must be well and truly
ready before they move onto the next level (Remember the FACES acronym we talked
about last week, then add enjoyment onto that). Help them to find books they enjoy to
read and share some of your own favourites.

Middle Years Captains Report
On Monday the year 7s and 8s went to La Trobe University in Bendigo. We learnt lots about
the university and what you can do there. On Tuesday the 5/6s went on a German excursion
to the Bendigo Art Gallery, thanks to all of the teachers that helped organise both of these
excursion. Yesterday was Pink Day, good job to everyone that came dressed in pink to raise
money for Breast Cancer Awareness. On Friday the greatest shave is on which involves some
teachers and students shaving their heads to raise money, including shaving off Mr Aurisch’s
beard! Have a good weekend.

“This comic book is about Garfield the
cat doing lots of funny things including
Odie and Garfield fighting and Garfield
sleeping a lot. Garfield has a teddy-bear
called Pookie. I like Garfield because it is
funny. I’d recommend this for Year 3 to
7 students who like funny books”

Emotional Literacy On Wednesday morning in Reading Time each Middle Years class spent some time brainstorming different emotions and thinking about what the definition of an emotion is. This was the first lesson in our Respectful Relationships program where students are exploring how to identify and empathise with others. Emotions are how our brain informs us of our progress towards a goal. The more important the goal, the stronger
the emotion. From Timothy A Pychyl’s—Goal Progress and Happiness—Psychology Today

Deutsche Nachrichten On Tuesday Klasse 5 und 6 went down to Bendigo and participated in the German Day at the Bendigo Art Gallery. The activities included learning about German Expressionists, making a Lebkuchenherz and participating in an Art trail. In the German Expressionists activity the produced a Self-Portrait using pastels. Some very good examples of future artists. One of the foods which you can eat at the Oktoberfest are the Lebkuchenherzen (gingerbread hearts). Students made a Lebkuchenherz, these were finished off during German lessons this week. The Art trail involved answering some questions about colour, people and artists in the Gothic Beauty exhibition which is being held at the Bendigo Art Gallery at the moment. A big Thank you to Helen Attrill (education Officer) for taking the German Expressionists and Gothic Beauty Art trail. Klasse 6 performed the song Drei Kleine Fische during lunch. The students were treated to Krapfen, which are small donuts which you can also get at the Oktoberfest. The Krapfen did not last long. Finally a Thank You goes to Henry who drove us down and returned us safely back to school and to Frau Mac and Herr Ferguson. Annette Burgstett German Co-ordinator

Senior School News
Congrats to the Year 9 & 10 Outdoor Ed class Last week I had the pleasure and sometimes pain (regarding the steep kilometer long) inclines of walking the Great Ocean Road Walk with Mrs Arthur, Mr Smith and the students. We started at Blanket Bay and finished at Princetown. The guide book and signage indicated we had walked approximately 68km in 3 days plus travelled over 700km return. However, we thought it might have been closer to 80km and at times it felt like a 1,000km. I’m am extremely proud of these students they did a wonderful job, under some challenging conditions, eg steep kilometer on kilometer inclines with their entire back packs (eg tents, gas cookers, food, water, clothing, sleeping bag). It soon taught us what we could leave behind on the bus for a day or two. The views made the inclines worthwhile. We had gorgeous weather, although a little too gorgeous on Friday afternoon when it wasn’t just us that was liking the sunshine. We found some friendly brown snakes along the grassy paths, but thankfully they were as scared of us as we were of them. I will always remember this trip and the perseverance and resilience these students and my fellow colleagues showed. THANK YOU and WELL DONE! Level 2 First Aid Course The College is running a Level 2 First Aid Course for students and the broader community on Tuesday 27th of November. Ian from Murray Mallee Training will run the course. The cost of the course is approximately $105. Participants will be required to complete relevant forms, including a unique student identifier number (USI) and a workbook prior to the course date. At this stage we are taking expressions of interest. Please contact the College and or sign up on my Office door. Year 10 2019 Yesterday I spoke with our current Year 9 students about options and future pathways including VCE, VCAL and VET subjects. These students have a great deal of potential and diligently listened to all the information. It was a pleasure to share the information and answer their questions. Next year Year 10 students have the option of studying VCE Food Studies, VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies and VCE Specialist Mathematics as part of their subjects. Both VCE Food Studies and VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies would run during two of the three elective blocks. VCE Specialist Mathematics would run alongside the Year 10 Mathematics class. Year 9 & 10 2019 Electives The elective booklet and specific details regarding subjects is being finalised as I type and you reading. This information should be distributed to students on Monday. Well done to Soph H, Ella R and Jas C: Wow what an amazing week it has been at East Loddon P-12 College with these lovely students inspiring and organising a week long campaign to raise awareness and funds for cancer. I’m looking forward to seeing my new hair do Friday and seeing the other staff lose their hair. Sarah Byrne Sub-school Leader
