Duane VermeulenAWSUM Celebrity Interview

Daniel Johannes ‘Duane’ Vermeulen was born on 3 July 1986 and matriculated at Hoërskool Nelspruit. From there on his professional rugby career ran through the Pumas (2005–2007), the

Cheetahs (2007–2008) and the Stormers (2009–2015), up to Toulon in France, where he is currently on contract. Duane plays his first of 35 test matches (up to the end of 2015) on 8 September 2012 against Australia. In 2014 he was nominated as one of five players for the IRB Player of the Year

award. As the iron man of South African rugby, Duane is respected as a world-class player locally and internationally. AWSUM News caught up with him to find out how life in France is treating him.

Q How do you experience life in France?

A Like any new place, France has its things to adapt to. Language, culture and food are some of the biggest things to get used to.

Q Tell us more about Toulon.

A Toulon is a smallish city in the south of France, that had its origins as a military harbour. The city is known today for shipbuilding, fish and wine, and of course also the rugby team. People here are crazy for RC Toulon and it hardly ever happens that our stadium is not packed.

V Hoe vergelyk die rugbystrukture tussen Toulon en die Stormers?

Q How do the rugby structures between Toulon and the Stormers compare?

A Both are extremely successful professional units. Because one works with much younger players in South Africa, much more time is spent here on development at club level.

Q How long did it take you to learn to speak French?

A I’ll tell you as soon as I’ve mastered it!

Q Do you manage to braai sometimes in France?

A The meat here is top quality and with the sun setting so late, it makes for perfect braai conditions.

Q How do the French differ from South Africans?

A I think that South Africans generally adapt quite well to France. The French can sometimes be a bit emotional and carry on about stuff, but for the rest, they are passionate people who love their country and their culture.

Q What do you miss the most about life in South Africa?

A One always misses one’s friends and family the most.

Q Do you plan to play in South Africa again in the Super Rugby series?

A It is difficult to know exactly what the future holds. For now, I have a job to do for Toulon and goals to achieve. Who knows what lies in wait after that.

Prefect teaOn Saturday, 12 March the Beaconhurst prefect body held a prefects’ tea as a fundraiser for the matric class of 2016 at the Beaconhurst school hall.

It might not be everyone’s “cup of tea” to be at school on a Saturday afternoon, but in this case it was worth it. Each table was individually and creatively decorated by the prefects and their mothers, who also provided the guests with coffee, tea, snacks and eats.

The guests were entertained by a motivational speaker, followed by a sassy fashion show performance by the matrics.

The tea was a huge success and sufficient funds were raised. Thank you to all the learners, parents and teachers who were involved in this event.

Agricultural Show 2016Over the weekend of 29 April to 2 May, three Beaconhurst High School learners competed at the East London Agricultural Show and the Eastern Cape Junior Champs held at Border Equestrian Club.

Emma Wicks riding Senor Doba achieved first place in show jumping, second show hack, second show riding and second best pleasure horse, as well as being the 2016 junior reserve showing champion. Tamzin Kent riding her pony, Harry Potter, achieved two firsts in show jumping, first show Hunter pony, first show riding pony, reserve champion cub Hunter, second ungraded working riding pony and reserve champion. Gaby Hattingh riding her pony, Zahara, achieved a third in equitation, two firsts and a second in show jumping, third for Cub Hunter, and was awarded the 70cm pony rider champion.

The girls’ hard work, perseverance, determination and love for the sport is evident as these are excellent results. The girls will continue competing in shows throughout the year. And we wish them the best of luck.

Tekkie TaxOn 26 May, Beaconhurst School once again proudly supported the Tekkie Tax initiative and was the school with the highest amount raised in East London for the second year running. “Tekkies” were worn with bright and colourful shoelaces. Savannah Bridger and

Joshua Hedley.

Lilyfontein Founders’ Day FunFounders’ Day and the Past Pupils Reunion were held over the weekend of 28 to 29 May. Events included an assembly, past pupils finger lunch and tour of the school, a rugby, hockey and netball Derby Day vs Stutterheim, fun country fair type games, parent and past pupils fun mixed hockey and touch rugby matches, and a potjiekos competition. It was a busy couple of days!

Mambesi Mnana (Gr 10) scores for Lilyfontein 1st vs Stutterheim 1st at the Derby Day.

Jordan Ansley bypasses the throw of a ball and uses his hands to dunk his Cricket Coach, Mr Friend.

New peer maths tutoring programmeGeorgina Fiorentinos heads up the innovative programme that pairs maths learners with their peer tutors to improve their personal performance in the High School.

Pre-Primary visit to Flamingo Park for a flying lesson

Pre-Primary learners get up close to a microlight and radio controlled aeroplanes during their outing to Flamingo Farm as part of their transport themed week.

Grade 1s learn navigationGrade 1s learned the basics of navigation as part of their pirate-themed Adventure Day. They used a map and followed clues around the school to discover the pirates’ buried treasure. This is one of many navigation based lessons they will have between Grade 1 and Grade 12 as part of the Lilyfontein Adventure Programme.

Willow Gerber and John-Wayne Truter read the clues from ‘Pirate’ Domoney.

Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod 2016 There were multiple Hudsonians and ensembles who participated in the annual Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod from 9 to 23 May. All participants did the school proud and the following results were achieved.

The medals included: Harold And Ernest Griggs Memorial Medal for the most promising brass player was awarded to Tristan Henderson and the Contemporary Section Medal for the best high school ensemble was awarded to our Hudson Park High School Jazz Band.

Special mentions were given to Avuzwa Honi, the Hudson Park High School Flute Trio, the Hudson Park High School Saxophone Ensemble and the Hudson Park High School Concert Band.

We received 22 Gold Awards, 18 Silver Awards ans 1 Bronze Award.

SA U/19 cricket to Sri LankaTwo Hudsonians, Akhona Mnyaka and Siphamandla Krweqe, have been selected to the South African U/19 team to tour Sri-Lanka from 16 June to 15 July – this is an amazing achievement for any school!

It is an honour for these two Grade 10 left-arm fast bowlers to have been selected and the school wishes them everything of the best in their future cricketing careers. They follow in the footsteps of left-arm fast bowler Ngazibini Sigwili, who opened the bowling in the final of the 2014 U/19 World Cup in the UAE, which South Africa won for the first time.

Rugby making history It was a historic day for Hudson Park in that the 1st XV recorded their first ever victory over Queen’s College, having first played them at 1st team level since 1985. Queens have always been Hudson’s “hoodoo side” through the years with many close matches, but the victory has always eluded Hudson. The closest Hudson got to victory was the draw 13-13 in (2012) with other close matches being 18-20 (2014); 30-38 (2013); 8-14 (2010); 12-13 (2004); 7-11 (2002); 15-16 (1990) and 3-4 in (1989). Hudson Park have now also beaten all the Border Colleges at rugby with two wins (1982 and 2004) and a draw (2013) against Selborne and four wins against Dale College (1983, 2007, 2013, 2015). We also enjoyed a great win (16-14) against St Andrews, the second against a college this season.

Swimming championAfter breaking 4 school records at our gala, she qualified for Level 5, which doubled as Olympic Trials. This time placed her as the 5th fastest woman in her event this year. Chloe also swam the fastest time in the country this year for girls in her age group. At Olympic trials, Chloe ended placing 7th, which is just phenomenal.

TetrathlonRhys Poovan has been selected to represent the SA U/19 team at the World Championships in Ireland from 14 to 18 June. He also competed in the Eastern Cape laser/run, Triathle and Biathle Championships, obtaining gold in all three of the competitions. Rhys will be representing the three Eastern Cape teams at the SA Champs from 26 to 28 June. Rhys has been selected to the SAMPA high performance academy for special training camps organised by South African Modern Pentathlon for grooming towards the Junior Olympics.

STIRLING HIGH SCHOOL (t) 043 735 1444 (e) [email protected] FIDELIS

Water PoloStirling Water Polo has had a magnificent season with ten players selected as South African representatives.

FRONT: Krystin Ibbotson, Erin Simms, Aashiq Raffie, Faiz Faruk Soomar, Sarah Maritz. BACK: Tayla-Jade Cawthorn, Chloë Meecham, Storm Siebert, Hanna Müller, Xanthe Ibbotson.

May DanceThe May Dance took place on Friday, 13 May in the school hall. This is always a highlight for Stirling band members, as they get to perform to an audience of 300 guests including parents, friends and the broader East London community. A mass band performance at the end is huge fun for all, as the Stirling Primary Band, Stirling Junior Band and the Stirling Jazz Big Band perform together.

SwimStirling High School swimmer Lesley Blignaut has been selected for a 9-member squad (2xWC, 1xKZN, 1xGAUT, 5xEC) who will join the SA Olympic Team on their Italian Training Camp and Treviso Swim Competition in Italy from 27 June to 11 July. What an incredible opportunity and development initiative for these young swimmers. Enjoy the experience Lesley, you deserve it!
