LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ's Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith: through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 3 beginning at the 12th verse

The healed man clung to Peter and John, and when Peter saw it he addressed the people, “The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. "And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ should suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the

time for establishing all that God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old. Moses said, `The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet from your brethren as he raised me up. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. And it shall be that every soul that does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.' And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came afterwards, also proclaimed these days. You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God gave to your fathers, saying to Abraham, `And in your posterity shall all the families of the earth be blessed.' God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you in turning every one of you from your wickedness." Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 111 Confitebor tibi 1 Hallelujah! I will give thanks to

the Lord with my whole heart, * in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation. 2 Great are the deeds of the Lord! * they are studied by all who delight in them. 3 His work is full of majesty and

splendor, * and his righteousness endures for ever.

4 He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; * the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.

5 He gives food to those who fear him; * he is ever mindful of his covenant.

6 He has shown his people the power of his works * in giving them the lands of the nations.

7 The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; * all his commandments are sure.

8 They stand fast for ever and ever, * because they are done in truth and equity.

9 He sent redemption to his people; he commanded his covenant for

ever;* holy and awesome is his Name.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;* those who act accordingly have a good understanding; his praise endures for ever.

THE EPISTLE

A Reading from the Word of God written in the First Letter of John Chapter 5 beginning at the 1st verse.

Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God, and every one who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; !5

Page 6: Easter 2 [2015]

and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood.

Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John

Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time on the evening of Easter day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe." Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are

written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook

Greetings:

The Easter weekend was for us one in which we were able to participate in the sacred rites of the end of the Lenten season and the beginning of the Fifty Days of Easter.

What makes the services of the Paschal Triduum so precious for us spiritually and theologically is that we seek to ritualize the events in which our Lord was glorified and in which christianity itself came into being.

We would by now be aware that we entered the Paschal Triduum on the evening of Maundy Thursday and that it ended with the completion of the Great Vigil of Easter.

We are now in the Easter season, the time in which the biblical texts at mass will focus especially on the post-death or resurrection appearances of Jesus.

It was these accounts of course that gave rise to the Easter faith that we continue to hold. It is this faith that gives us the courage to rise above despair and to face life firmly

Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dies no more; death has no more dominion over him. Romans 6:9

We may note that the testimony of Christ’s presence was experienced within community; that is primarily where the disciples or others were together.

They experienced the power and presence of Christ especially on meal sharing occasions. (Luke 24:13-35, John 21: 1 - 13).

Whether Jesus actually physically ate meals on such occasion is not of great importance; what is of great spiritual significance is that in all of the resurrection meals scenes, He is the host; even when invited as in Luke 24.

What this says theologically is that our Lord is with us whenever we come together for meal sharing especially in the Holy Eucharist; and we express this presence liturgically when we bow, genuflect or stand at the Gospel reading.

Jesus is also the Host at meal times in our homes and so we must always be prepared to thank him for being a part of our respective households when we sit to eat.

He continually shows us his hands and his side that ours will always be hearts of gratitude and love.

Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER By Sophia Marshall

Every day we are vigorously bombarded by the weight loss industry and health professionals to lose weight through dieting. It is constantly in your face that you can achieve health and happiness by some new fad diet. There is a subliminal message of that you could look like the size 6 model, wearing the skinny jeans and mid-riff blouse, on the magazine cover.

To be successful at a diet, one must learn to ignore or distrust inner signals of hunger, appetite and instead depend on external references, such as foods allowed/not allowed, suggested frequency of eating, and weighed or measured portion sizes. This focus on diet plans and weight loss is referred to as the 'diet mentality'.

Associated with this mentality is weight obsession, poor self-image, disordered eating patterns, disordered lifestyles and excessive or inadequate exercise. It is well documented that continued dieting can result in inadequate nutrition, fatigue, weakness, sudden death from cardiac arrhythmia and gallstones. In a nutshell, repeated unsuccessful attempts at long-term weight loss can increase health problems.
