Easter 2016

I am sure that you will enjoy reading about the many events enjoyed by

staff and students at Bishop’s. None of these experiences would have

happened without enthusiastic students, supportive families, and an excel-

lent staff and governors. Thank you to you all.We hope that you all enjoy a

peaceful Easter break and that our students, particularly Year 11, feel refreshed and ready to

tackle the challenges ahead. We will continue to do all we can to support them.

Science Club has just heard that they have been

awarded a grant of over £500 to run a project on

Programmable Robotics from the Institute of

Physics! Science club wrote their own bid and

made the application for this grant so they are

very excited to hear they have been given the

funding!

Another exciting term in Science club. With the help of ex-student Hugo Jobst and

a great team of Year 10 experts we have been looking at crystals; the club has

been growing the biggest Copper Sulfate crystals they can and using pipe

cleaners to grow crystals in unusual shapes with Mr Parry.

We have also moved on to some physics investigations this term.

We used the power of static electricity to alter the path of water and

to move drinks cans. The full power of static electricity was definitely

felt when Mr Dingsdale demonstrated the Van de Graaf generator.

That generated a lot of interest, shockingly!

In preparation for Easter we have been eggs-perimenting with eggs.

How much stronger is an egg on its end rather than on its side? How can you tell

the difference between a fresh and a hard boiled egg, without breaking it? Can

you transport an egg safely from the table to the

floor without touching it? For the answer to all these

questions and many more, come to Science club!

The Student Council has continued to be well

represented by all year groups at meetings this term.

Recently, a panel of students took part in the inter-

view process for the Deputy Head position which gave them valuable interview experience.

A number of students from the Student Council helped out with tours, showing the candi-

dates around the school.

Those who took part were excellent role models and they did a great job.

Kerry Spink and Jade Hudson were invited to participate in consultation at Herefordshire

Council on the new WISH website, to get a young person’s perspective. They were able to

give their feedback to the Council on the day. It is hoped that the girls will be able to pass

on the information to the rest of the students by giving an assembly on the topic.

Assemblies are something that the Student Council is becoming accustomed to. Alice

Farmer, Gareth Swindail-Parry, Charmaine Watkins and David Aitken have all organised and

presented assemblies to the houses over the past couple of months. They have focused on

the school’s charity events and helped to promote “Charities week.” They are all developing

excellent public speaking skills.

The Student Council is the voice of the students. Although not all students are members,

students can pass on suggestions and comments to their form representatives to discuss at

meetings. These suggestions are then passed on to the Senior Leadership Team. All ideas and

suggestions are welcome.

The next Student Council meeting is on 25th April in room 24 at 3.20.

Exam preparations for these exams should already be well underway. To aid Year 10 & Year

11 students with their revision we recommend that they make use of the following:

ActiveLearn, lunchtime and after school revision sessions, the past paper exam questions

mark schemes and examiner’s reports that are available on the science area of the website

priced £3 each and the BHBSSci twitter feed. Students can also ask their subject teachers

for help!

Students are very good at revising the content that they are already

good at. I suggest that they

focus on the areas that they find difficult or don’t like as it is in these areas

that they can make the biggest difference to their grades. The revision

trackers contained in their booklets are a really good place to start.

On 17th March 35 students were able to watch a live broadcast gaining points and

tips on writing and drawing from Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Morpurgo and Nick

Sharratt the illustrator.

The Kielder Nostalgia Quiz & Supper raised over £248 - thank you to everyone who

came and made it such a memorable evening . There is another quiz and supper

booked for the Autumn Term and everyone is welcome.

Herefordshire Festival: 17th-23rd April

The school submits many music ensembles into the annual Herefordshire Festival each year.

This year is no different. The school is well represent and many of our ensembles compete

with other schools across the nearby counties and across the border. Many individuals also

enter.

Social Media in Humanities

In Humanities we have a commitment to using social media,

within the guidance of the whole school social media policy.

We hope that we can offer support, engagement and help

Our Instagram account, @bishopshums, is used to support the visual nature of Geogra-

phy and History and model responsible use of social media to our

students.

To assist Y11 students with their

Science revision there are some

valuable resources available for

them to use.

The Science department have downloaded every past exam paper, mark scheme and examiners

report for Y10 & Y11 Physics, Chemistry & Biology. This also includes all the exams for the triple scientists.

These are available for students to use and are on the Science area of the school website. Practising

past exam papers is seen as the single most effective way of preparing for exams. I have also included

Many students, whilst in Y10, paid for access to ActiveLearn. They can still use this. If, however, they

have forgotten their log in details they will need to come and speak to the Science department.

Improving Gender Balance Project: On Friday 20th November 14 of our Y10 students visited Worcester

University to be trained up as Science Ambassadors. The girls had a hands-on day that will enable

them to lead Science projects with some of our local primary schools next term. The girls worked with

students from 3 other schools on activities that they will be able to use with younger children. We are

one of only 8 schools nationally to be involved with this project.

MFL

KS4 News: Y11 pupils have nearly come to

the end of their GCSE courses and are busy

preparing for a final speaking task and re-

vising for the final exams. Numbers at the

French Biscuit Club after school have been

good but there are always biscuits to spare:

anyone from the GCSE French groups are

welcome to join (room 26). Spanish and

German revision continues. The depart-

menthave been trying to send home week-

ly practice questions but some e-mail com-

munication has not been working well

therefore practice questions have been put

on the MFL page of the school website,

where they can be downloaded.

Students are still able to buy the Edexcel Revision Workbook from the MFL office for further independ-

ent practice – these are £2.50.

A small number of our Y11 students will take Russian GCSE this year, having studied after school with

Mrs Bird for three years . We also have students taking GCSEs in Welsh, Chinese, Polish and Portu-

guese as we continue to offer our students the chance to be accredited for language learning which

they have already undertaken. One Y11 student will sit Latin GCSE, having studied at the Sixth Form

College with others from Hereford Secondary Schools.

Y10 pupils have written their first piece of controlled as-

sessment and will complete another in the Summer

term, laying a strong foundation in most cases ready for

their final year of GCSE study.

KS3 News: We are excited to launch our new Vocab

Express learning platform for Key Stage 3 pupils. Very

shortly, all KS3 students will have a login and password

for the Vocab Express site.

If you find it is needed, the school code is UKBHBS. Teachers will encourage students to go onto the

site and practise vocabulary from the topic they are currently on and they can also go back in the

book to previous topics if they feel the need for practice. There is a leader board for each class so

that students can try to gain more points than their classmates by practising more vocabulary.

Teachers will set some learning homework on the site, which will record each student’s progress with

the task and will let the teacher know if it has been completed. It is proven that students who learn

and retain vocabulary are more successful in examinations and feel more confident with the lan-

guage. Students can also learn a lot about their own language when they widen their vocabulary in

other languages.

At whatever level you are studying, Vocab Express provides a vocab learning tool that quickly and effi-

ciently builds up core vocabulary and key terminology. All vocabulary or terminology required for the par-

ticular exam, text book or scheme of work that you are studying is pre-loaded and pre-categorised into

digestible bite-sized chunks of words for easy learning. A proven algorithm originally tried and tested with

leading foreign languages schools creates a stimulating and engaging learning environment in which you

can visually monitor your progress.

Vocab Express can now also be used on the move via its iOS and Android mobile apps.

Y9 pupils who begin the new GCSE courses in September are beginning to look at different

styles of tests and activities, in line with the new requirements.

Translation from and into the language becomes a formally assessed task in the exams,

along with the description of photos and role plays (which some parents may remember

from their time at school studying language).

We are keen to encourage students to be creative with

language and will shortly put a weekly photo onto the

MFL Page of the website, along with some translation

activities which students can access for homework or, if

the task is not set by their class teacher, simply for prac-

tice. Please encourage students to look for these after

Easter. Y8 students who are keen to progress in lan-

guage may also like to try the tasks.

You may have read in the media that there are growing concerns about the mental health

and emotional well being of our young people. In response to this the PSHE Association has

issued a new set of guidelines to help schools to write and deliver appropriate lessons. The

school has been working on several schemes of work to be delivered in KS3 and KS4. A

number S4L teachers have agreed to trial this in preparation for all to teach next year.

Lessons will be based around:

Promoting emotional health during transition and milestones

Promoting emotional well being

Resilience and reframing failure

Unhealthy coping strategies: Self Harm

Unhealthy coping strategies: Eating disorders

Understanding depression and anxiety

Mindfulness

All lessons are relevant to the key stage. There will also be

a set of five lessons based around healthy body image.

S4L

It has been a busy half term in S4L! Students have

been working hard and continue to produce

some excellent work. We have had a full

programme of visitors.

Safety on social media

As you aware in S4L the school continues to address the

issue of the safe use of social networks.

During their S4L lessons Y7 have all had talks by Alison

Thomson and Chris Lea from West Mercia Police. They

have discussed how young people should stay safe on so-

cial networks.

Most Y8 and Y9 groups have had their ‘refreshers’ sessions and produced some great work

based on staying safe on social networks and cyber bullying.

The issue of radicalisation and the growing problem of extremist views. This is a growing con-

cern and one that the Government is tackling.

Over the past few weeks Nicky Morgan the Education Minister has been promoting a new

HM Government website to offer teachers and parents practical advice regarding radicali-

We hope that you find this information useful. We will continue to address such issues and

keep you up to date with new initiatives and advice issued.

We have now begun a series of year group assemblies to address radicalisation and ex-

tremism. They are being delivered by Mercia Police. The assemblies will be appropriate for

the year group and based on issues surrounding radicalisation and extremism.

As a school we are committed to ensuring our students safety and will continue to keep you

up to date with any information that we feel will be of benefit to you.

Work Related Learning

Recently as part of their work related learning all Y10 students took

part in mock interviews. Every year they local employers give up

their time to come into school to interview each of our students. This

is a valuable experience for our students and this year (once again)

we had fantastic feedback from the interviewers. Many comment-

ed on the professional manner of our students, that they answered

the questions in detail and with enthusiasm. Students should have

had their written feedback by now and had a chance to reflect on

their experience.

Financial Wellbeing

In Y10 S4L lessons students have completed their workshops on

personal finance. Student voice is telling us that students would

like to know more about personal finance and budgeting. To

help with this I am currently working with Santander to develop

a new unit of work for KS3 and KS4. I am hoping that we can

begin to deliver this from September.

RE - Philosophy & Ethics

I’m sure that you will agree Religious Education

and Philosophy & Ethics has never been more

relevant in today's world. In our rapidly chang-

ing multi-ethnic society religion is often the key

to the way people think and act.

Today more than ever It is evident that in society religion and beliefs have a huge

influence on individuals, culture, behaviour and life. Because of this it can be argued that

the study of religion and belief is an indispensable part of a complete education.

We believe that an understanding of religions and cultures will not only nurture a more

tolerant society, but most religions and beliefs offer answers to some of life’s deepest

questions. Within the RE / Philosophy & Ethics lessons we have the opportunity to address

many of the topical and pressing issues.

Year Seven have had a great term and produced some excellent work! They have been

engaged by the units that they have covered and shown

real commitment to their studies. They have produced two

excellent milestones assessments and proving to be budding

RE specialists! They are now preparing to start work on the

Buddhism unit. This includes the ever popular meditation

lesson that they always enjoy…..this should result in some

very relaxed young people!

Year Eight are well into their work on Islam and have found the lessons a valuable opportunity to ask

the questions that they may not ordinarily ask. This is a valuable unit of work as it helps to address preju-

dice and answers many questions about what is a peaceful and fascinating religion. They have a mile-

stone assessment coming up that will require them to research

religious leaders. For obvious reasons we will be telling students to be careful when researching. Their

research will be based around leaders in Buddhism, Christianity and maybe

Hinduism.

Year Nine – Continue to work well in their Philosophy & Ethics GCSE. They have now

completed a number of exam questions and we are seeing real progress.

Year Ten – have worked steadily through their Philosophy & Ethics GCSE. They have now begun their

unit in Medical Ethics and the news is working well for us at the moment as many of the issues, such

as genetic engineering and abortion have been topical. With this in mind we need to encourage

students to watch, read and listen to the news as so much of it is relevant and can be used for

Philosophy & Ethics!

Year Eleven are completing their final units of work…how time flies it only seems like yesterday we

were introducing them to their new GCSE! The GCSE examinations are now fast approach-

ing….they are a matter of weeks away!

will sit the GCSE. Our students are fortunate as we are one of only a few schools in Herefordshire to

offer Philosophy & Ethics as a compulsory subject. This means that students have the opportunity to

achieve a GCSE that others will not have. A great deal of what we study is concerned not just with

religious concepts but with moral and ethical issues too. Within Philosophy & Ethics we explore a vari-

ety of different views concerning our modern world. It is very favourably considered by employers

and colleges alike as it demonstrates a greater social awareness and understanding. With effort

and hard work, a good grade is possible.

It is important that homework is completed on time and students revise thoroughly before end of

U13 Rugby

The U13 squad completed their season by winning the Herefordshire County VIIs Tour-

nament. They were convincing winners against each of the other schools competing:

John Masefield, Hereford Academy, Hereford Cathedral and Lucton.

Looking at the season as a whole the AXV have won 10 of their 14 games, which is

something to be proud of at this age group. Ben Gifford has had a

good season and is starting to show signs of being an

inspirational captain. Thanks to Mr Jason Lewis for his

invaluable help with the coaching what is a large,

enthusiastic squad with a lot of potential for the future.

BHBS SPORT

The 50th season of rugby at Bishops School has come to an end and it has been a tough season for all

the year 11’s who have represented the school this season.

It took until the 6th game of the season for them to register their first win, but the boys never stopped

trying and never gave, up giving 100% effort in every single game that they put on the shirt. In total 32

players have put on the prestigious shirt and represented the school and the local community.

They have been a pleasure to work with this season and they are a credit to their parents, the school

and to themselves.

I wish them all the best in their future endeavours and hope they continue to play rugby after they

leave school.

Bishop Vesey's Grammar School U12 7's Tournament.

In the pool stages Bishop’s lost to Solihull School who went on to win the main tournament.

BHBS went into the Plate competition and won it against KES Stratford in the final convinc-

ingly. The team was Samuel Dominguez-Middle, Harvey Vaughan, Monty Bevan, Rhiannon

Barry, Jay Mahamba, Zak Bonfield, Henry Warren, Ethan Scott, Thomas Horan, Oliver Bulleid

and Mackenzie Rees. All had outstanding performances but in particular the following

stood out Samuel Dominguez-Middle, Harvey Vaughan, Ethan Scott and Rhiannon Barry.

STOP PRESS: Futsal County Champions 2016. Off to the Nationals

Bishop’s Y11 futsal team won the Herefordshire county finals and qualify to play in

the regional final at Birmingham in May. Excellent attitude, effort and performance!

Three players were injured and so the team had to put a rugby player in goal. After

losing the first match the boys went on to win three in a row to top the group.

Well done to Ollie Smith, Alex Lancett, Wilf Munn, Harry Simpson and especially Alex

Rosser in goal!!

School Games

The young leaders who officiated and ran the events were our

very own year 9 pupils who were selected to join Herefordshire

Leadership academy. They were thanked for their hard work

and dedication throughout

the day.

Our U12 sports hall athletics

and U13 hockey teams quali-

fied for the day. The U12’s finished second overall-a fantastic

achievement.

All those attending the school games on the 10th February had the

opportunity to meet Great Britian womens hockey team member

Chloe Rogers. Chloe won Bronze at the London 20112 Olympics

and was on hand during the day to chat to pupils about her expe-

riences of becoming an elite athlete

Girls Cricket

The U13 girls travelled over to the Bridge St facility in Leominster on the 23rd February to compete in the

Lady Taverners cricket competition. After playing all their games came third overall, a great achieve-

ment considering they have only just come together to train

as a team for this competition. Harriet Shuker was highlighted

by the officials as being the fastest female bowler they had

seen! Well done

On the 26th February, the girls U15's cricket team travelled to Leominster to compete in The Lady Tav-

eners schools cricket tournament. The highlights were our first match against Hereford Academy, bat-

ting first we scored a total of 101 runs to 3 wickets, our opposition scored a total of 59 to 4 wickets. An-

other highlight was our match against John Masefield, scoring 85 runs to 2 wickets with Tharindi and

Emma retiring. John Masefield scored 75 runs to 7 wickets, when we weren’t playing our matches we

were able to take part in some coaching sessions which helped improve our skills. The team played

fantastically well as we won this round and are now continuing on to the county finals. Written by Lau-

We went to Hereford Cathedral School to complete in the county final. We fielded first with great

bowling again from Tharindi claiming a wicket on her first bowl. Over the innings as a team we took 5

wickets. There was great batting from everyone but ellis Vaughan-eckley in particular who retired

scoring 21 not out and was last woman standing. Although the final result didn’t go our way we had a

Jiu Jitsu champions

Congratulations to Robynn Quinn who recently became Bra-

zilian Jiu Jitsu National Champion. She won her weight cate-

gory final 21-0 and finished with an armbar submission!

Mitchell Young also competed in Birmingham resulting in a

double gold at the Nationals. He entered the ‘absolutes’

which means any weight category compete-wining gold

here also. A fantastic achievement.

Domanikas Gagalas is also national champion for his age

and weight as he fought up a category fighting off competi-

tion form boys bigger and older than him. Well done to all

three of our talented performers.

GIRLS RUGBY:

The U12/13 squad had their first full contact game this

term, even though some of our players have been

representing Bishops in the boys team. They played

the Hereford Academy, an experienced, physical

team. A special mention goes out to Hollie Gawler who

scored two of our tries. Thanks again to Chris Stephenson

for all his hard work coaching the team to the standard

they are.

Year 7 boys rugby

Year 7 rugby have had a very successful season with over

70 boys representing the school. They are now county 7’s

champions after beating Lucton school in the final despite

losing to them in the league earlier. Outstanding players of

the year are Thomas Horan, Theo Lind, Henry Warren,

Ethan Scott, Adam Hinksman, Matthew Harris and Rhian-

non Barry. They have worked exceptionally hard and

made massive progress since September to compete with

some of the best school, in the country.

U14 B team netball tournament

The U14 girls travelled to Lady Hawkins

school in Kington to compete in the

county B team tournament. They had

a very successful afternoon beating

Lady Hawkins, Tenbury and Whitecross

winning the tournament overall.

KIELDER SPORTS

On Wednesday 10th February 15 of the KIP students went to the Leisure Centre to com-

pete in The Herefordshire Schools Winter Games. During the morning session they com-

peted in a football tournament. We played 5 or 6 games of football against Barrs Court,

Whitecross and Westfields in two different age groups. The junior team were very suc-

cessful in their group and made it to the final winning that 1-0. The senior group were al-

so successful in making it to the final but unfortunately lost 1-0.

All players had a gold or silver medal to take home.

During the afternoon session we competed

against the same schools in New Age Kurl-

ing. All the children competed and points

were added together to find an overall win-

ner. Bishops were the successful school and

came first.

In the evening - it will be open as usual for students to leave at

15.20 but will be closed at 15.45 for the day.
