This term our magazine has devoted a section to a school visit we got from some German students.

A Group of 18 fifteen-year-old students and their two teachers spent a week with us in February. We took them to Tarragona, St. Benet de Bages and Barcelona. They spent the weekend with their partners and families and some of them visited Montserrat and Sitges too.We truly believe it is a great chance for our students to get to know a bit about another culture and a different way of life.We are going to visit them in Germany for a week at the end of March. We will keep you updated. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this month’s issue!!

Maurici Tarragó, our Greek teacher, joined us in our school trip to Tarragona and prepared a dossier for the German students in English, so that they could understand the importance of Tarragona throughout history and, in particular, in Roman times. We want to thank him for his kindness and his work.

SOME GERMAN STUDENTS IN OUR CLASSROOM

It was a great experience because we had the opportunity to introduce our city to the German people. Our group talked about our high school, we made a short PowerPoint presentation to show them the basic things about Ins. Lluís de Peguera. Every group chose a different topic but they were all related to Manresa. We think that the Germans liked the presentation very much because the explanations were not really too difficult and they could understand it well.

SITUATIONManresa is situated in the centre of Catalonia. Our high school is situated in the downtown of our small town.

LLUÍS DE PEGUERALluís de Peguera was a lawyer. His field was criminal law. He was born in Manresa in 1540 and he died in 1610. Some of his works were all related to the law. Our high school was built with his name on it because he was an important person from Manresa.

BUILDINGThis art nouveau building was begun in 1907 and was finished in 1927. This building of a secondary school was for a lot of years the public library of the Barcelona Province Council. The façade is very ornamental, including element from neoclassical times. Now our high school is being restored.

OUR HIGH SCHOOLThere are about a thousand students in the school. There are about 72 teachers and 30 classrooms. The high school is divided into 2 buildings, one wing for junior students and another one for senior students.

BATXILLERATWe are doing batxillerat that is equal to senior high. Batxillerat is divided into two years and there are 4 branches. The social and economic studies, human studies, arts and science and technology studies. A science student will take four main subjects: maths, biology, chemistry and physics, together with Catalan, Spanish p.e. and philosophy. Then you can choose among some other options as well.

GREEN ROOFSGreen roofs have become a new trend for the last 50 years . Green roofs are surfaces like real parks on the buildings. This tendency started in Germany in the 1960s and now we can find green roofs around the world. In Germany, 14% of the top of buildings are green.

There are an uncountable number of green roof benefits. The most important are:

At first, they exploit places which are usually neglected. They protect buildings against heat and cold so they reduce the need for air conditioning or heating by as much as 25%. The herbage cleans the air filtering pollution. Green roofs don’t require much care because, in order to live, plants only need sunlight and some rain from time to time. Furthermore, they beautify cities.

There are a lot of green roofs around the world. In the picture we can see the Fukuoka Prefectural International Hall in Japan.

Nowadays people around the world have a lot of pens left behind on their desks and in drawers. Most of those pens don't even work anymore but we never find the time to collect them and take them to a proper recycling centre. In addition, the process of pen recycling is very complex and most of them end up thrown away in some landfill. To help to reverse this situation, Costas Schuler introduces a new way of reusing pens. He takes advantage of the beautiful colors of most pens and markers and uses them to decorate anything you can imagine. He has been decorating his entire car with used pens that people around the world send him. If you think you want to contribute to his cause you can send him your pens and markers. This is easy, you just have to go to his website (http://www.penguyart.com) and follow the instructions.

Costas Schuler, aka The Pen Guy, encourages people to help him turn used pens into a work of art. He is now starting a new project based on the construction of a little city made of pens, which he will call "Pentopia". It will be a place for a lot of fun events such as birthday parties and fun meetings. He will need more than 10,000 used pens to build Pentopia so if you think you can help him, go ahead and send your used pens to the address you will find on his website!

I had been waiting for three years to see John and Edward Grimes, also known as Jedward. They were X Factor UK contestants in 2009. It was in December 2011 when I finally got the opportunity to see them in concert in a London theatre. It was packed as they had sold out. All of us were eager for the concert to start. The night before the concert it came to light that one member of the band was sick, which was cause for concern casting a shadow over everyone's excitement, but the band tweeted that we didn't have to worry. The day of the concert arrived, I was reading the news and twitter in a bid to find any news of the band. At 1pm I went to the theatre. The concert was not until 6 pm but I wanted to meet them and that was the only chance I had to do so. When I arrived there were already people waiting for them and in response to our calls they came to see us at 1:15pm. They were so friendly and lovely. I made the most of the opportunity to be with them by taking some photos and by telling them that I would love them to visit Spain. At 6pm the concert started. I enjoyed it like it was the first time. They played pop music and danced for two hours. People went crazy. They were screaming and shouting and clapping during every single song. It was a fantastic day, luckily I know that someday I will spend it again.I am so proud of them, they have achieved a lot of good things and everybody in the UK knows about them. I hope to see them soon, don't take it the wrong way, but I would like to go out with them. They are such a good role model to young people considering that they refrain from drinking alcohol and from taking drugs. They have a healthy life and they behave in an appropriate way as role models for young people

Imagine is a song written and performed by John Lennon. It was released in 1971. Lennon was born in Liverpool in 1940 when he grew up he formed a music band called the Beatles. While he was in the band he enjoyed success. The band broke up in 1970 and Lennon started a solo career and wrote songs against war. Imagine is one of those songs. It encourages to imagine a world without religions or nationalities where everyone could live in peace without living for material possessions. Imagine is one of the most famous songs in the 20th century.
