WHAT HAPPENED TO "FISH FRIDAYS"? Catholics used to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year ("Fish Fridays"), but many Catholics in the US will resume eating meat on Fridays after Easter. This is allowed by the Church as long as another form of penitential practice is observed. The "rules" were changed for American Catholics by our bishops back in the 1960's. It's important for us to fully understand those changes and the obligations they created for us as followers of Christ.
Catholics set apart Friday for special penitential observance by which they gladly suffer with Christ that they may one day be glorified with Him. This is the heart of the tradition of abstinence from meat on Friday in the holy Catholic Church. The spirit of penance is that we discipline ourselves in that which we enjoy most, and for some people today abstinence from meat does not represent a true sacrifice, while renunciation of other things would be more penitential. Therefore, the Catholic bishops of the United States, motivated by the desire to give Friday penitential practice greater vitality, amended the norm of Abstinence from Meat on all Fridays. Catholics in the US may substitute a meaningful form of penance on Fridays if abstinence from meat poses no real sacrifice for them (bear in mind that many Catholics continue to observe abstinence from meat on Fridays as their choice of penitential self-denial). FRIDAY
• remains a special day of penitential observance throughout the year • should be within each week what Lent is within the entire year • should be a day of self-denial & mortification in prayerful remembrance of the Passion of Jesus Christ
WORKS OF VOLUNTARY SELF-DENIAL & PERSONAL PENANCE RECOMMENDED TO CATHOLICS BY THE US BISHOPS
[Suitable for observance of Friday Penance as well as for voluntary penitential practice at other times]
• abstinence from flesh meat • abstinence from alcoholic beverages • performing volunteer work in hospitals • visiting the sick • serving the needs of the aged and the lonely • instructing the young in the Faith • participating as Christians in community affairs • meeting our obligations to our families, friends, neighbors/community/parishes, with a special zeal
(born of the desire to add the merit of penance to the other virtues exercised in good works born of living faith)

DAYS OF PRAYER & HEALING
“Go, pick up the pieces lest they be lost.”
JOHN 6:12
With these words, John Cardinal O’Connor directed the Sisters of Life to a ministry of reverence for those women & men who suffer following the tragedy of abortion. Since 1996, they have heeded that call with the help of Theresa Bonopartis, their co-worker in...
ENTERING CANAAN… A SACRAMENTAL JOURNEY TO AN INHERITANCE OF MERCY
FOR THOSE SUFFERING ABORTION
Many don’t realize that post-traumatic stress is the untold story of abortion. There are literally millions of women and men who, too often silently and alone, suffer some of the most devastating psychological & spiritual consequences of our society’s disregard for the sanctity of human life and sacredness of human sexuality. All retreats are led by Theresa Bonopartis and other women who have experienced both the suffering of abortion and the joy of healing in Christ; they are directed by faithful priests with a true heart for those who suffer and are hosted by the Sisters of Life. They include: Witnesses of Mercy, Scripture Sharing, Personal Prayer and Quiet Time, the opportunity for Sacramental Confession and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
UPCOMING RETREATS Saturday, April 27, 2013 & Saturday, June 1, 2013

OUR LORD MADE A GREAT PROMISE TO ALL THOSE SOULS WHO WOULD GO TO CONFESSION AND THEN
WORTHILY RECEIVE HIM IN HOLY COMMUNION ON THE GREAT FEAST OF MERCY, DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
I want to grant a complete pardon
to the souls that will go to Confession and
receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy.
JESUS DELIVERED HIS EXTRAORDINARY MESSAGE OF DIVINE MERCY THROUGH SAINT FAUSTINA. HE ALSO REMINDED US OF THE NEED FOR US TO BE MERCIFUL TO OTHERS IN THOUGHT & DEED.
THE DIVINE MERCY MESSAGE
The message of Divine Mercy is simple. It is that GOD LOVES US - ALL OF US. And, he wants us to recognize that HIS MERCY IS GREATER THAN OUR SINS, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let that mercy flow through us to others in our own merciful acts. Thus, all will come to share in His joy.
Divine Mercy Sunday NEXT SUNDAY, April 7th HOLY HOUR - 3:00PM
“Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day
will be granted complete forgiveness of sins AND punishment.”
~ Jesus made this promise to St. Faustina
In return, Jesus said we must:
• SEEK ABSOLUTION in the Sacrament of Reconciliation on or close to the Feast
• RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION worthily* on Divine Mercy Sunday (*meaning you are in a state of grace from a good , recent confession).
• BE MERCIFUL TO OTHERS, as you seek mercy for yourself.
The Church declared Divine Mercy Sunday a special feastday for the faithful, raised it to the universal calendar and offers an indulgence:
A PLENARY INDULGENCE, granted under the usual conditions (Sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion and Prayer for the in-tentions of Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or DIVINE MER-CY SUNDAY, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the pray-ers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the most Blessed Sac-rament exposed (or reserved in the tabernacle), recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus.
