Good Friday is an obligatory day of universal fast and

abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who have

completed their 18th year and have not yet reached

their 60th year. Fasting allows a person to eat one

full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to

equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is

obligatory for all who have reached their 14th year.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until

the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the

"paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the

Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more

fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

El Viernes Santo es un día obligatorio universal de ayu-

no y abstinencia. El ayuno es obligatorio para todos

aquellos que han cumplido 18 años y que no han llega-

do a los 60 años. Se permite en el ayuno que una per-

sona como una sola comida completa. Dos comidas

pequeñas pueden ser consumidas, que no sean equiva-

lentes a una comida completa. Abstinencia (de comer

carne) es obligatoria para todos aquellos que han al-

canzado la edad de 14 años.

Si fuera posible, el ayuno del Viernes Santo debe ser

continuado hasta la Vigilia Pascual (la noche del Sába-

do Santo) como un “ayuno pascual” para honrar el su-

frimiento y muerte de Nuestro Señor Jesús, y preparar-

nos para participar de una manera completa y celebrar

plenamente preparados de su Resurrección.

Annual Good Friday Collection

for the Holy Land

Christians around the world are united in a special way dur-

ing Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Our hearts minds and

prayers are also especially aware of the Holy Land. Once a

year on Good Friday Catholics throughout the world are called

on to support Christians in the Holy Land. Many Christians in

the Holy Land depend on the collection for their lives.

As a pontifical collection requested by the Holy Father the

annual Good Friday collection offers a direct link for parish-

ioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy

Places. When you donate on Good Friday you are doing your

part to help support the Christians who are a minority in the

Holy Land. Please be as generous as your abundance allows.

Sacred Heart Enthronement

Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive

those who trespass against us.

Our willingness to forgive those who hurt us is the sole con-

dition to receiving forgiveness from God for all our sins.

There is no easy way out, Jesus was clear about this. This

caveat is the one over which we all stumble - forgiveness in

return for freedom. Our deep human instinct is self protec-

tion from pain of any kind and retaliation against the one

who has caused us pain.

But Jesus gave us a radical solution - unconditional forgive-

ness!

As He hung on the cross, near death, in excruciating pain,

He was seeing those who were physically present and re-

sponsible for His torture, but He was also seeing you, me,

and everyone else, for ultimately we are all responsible.

Jesus was human as well as divine. Do you think that as He

hung there, fighting for breath that He was having warm,

fuzzy feelings about us?

No, but He called out to God, His Father: "Father, forgive

them for they do not understand what they do."

There is the answer; the solution is through an act of will,

not an emotion. When I decide to forgive, a miracle occurs.

The person who is causing me pain is freed by God to

change, my sins are forgiven and my soul is cleansed so

that I can experience a deep unity with God who loves me

completely.

Father, through the death and resurrection of your Son, You

have set me free. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced by a lance

because of my sins, have mercy on me.

Colecta Anual del Vienes Santo

para la Tierra Santa

Los Cristianos alrededor del mundo están unidos de una ma-

nera especial durante la Cuaresma, La Semana Santa y la

Pascua de Resurrección. Nuestros corazones, mentes y ora-

ciones son especialmente consiente de la Tierra Santa. Una

vez al año el Viernes Santo los católicos en todo el mundo

son llamados a apoyar a los Cristianos en la Tierra Santa.

Muchos Cristianos en la Tierra Santa dependen de la recau-

dación para poder subsistir. La recaudación pontifical que el

Santo Padre pide anualmente el Viernes Santo es una opor-

tunidad directa para cada parroquiano de ser testigo de la

paz y de ayudar a proteger los Lugares Santos. Cuando Ud.

hace su donación el Viernes Santo Ud. está haciendo su par-

te ayudando a sustentar a los Cristianos que son la minoría

en la Tierra Santa. Por favor sea lo más generoso que sus

medios económicos le permitan.

moria o en honor de un ser querido,

están siendo aceptadas ahora para el

Entronización del Sagrado Corazón

Perdona nuestras ofensas así como nosotros tam-

bién perdonamos a los que nos ofenden

Nuestra disposición de perdonar a aquellos que nos

ofenden es la única condición para recibir el perdón

de Dios por todos nuestros pecados. No hay una

salida fácil, Jesús fue muy claro en esto. Esta adver-

tencia es en la cual nosotros nos tropezamos -el per-

donar a cambio de nuestra libertad. Nuestro profun-

do instinto humano es de protegernos de cualquier

sufrimiento y de tomar represalias en contra de

aquella persona que nos ha causado dolor.

Pero Jesús nos dio una solución radical - ¡perdón in-

condicional!

Cuando Él se encontraba colgado en la cruz, mori-

bundo, en insoportable dolor, El veía a los que esta-

ban físicamente presente y que eran responsables

de Su tortura, pero Él también te veía a ti, y a mí, y

todo el mundo, ya que ultimadamente nosotros to-

dos somos responsables. Jesús fue humano así co-

mo divino. ¿Ud. cree que cuando Él estaba colgado

ahí, luchando por respirar El tenia sentimientos cáli-

dos, y confusos para nosotros?

No, pero El llamo a Dios, Su Padre: “Perdónalos por-

que no saben lo que hacen.” Aquí está la respuesta,

la solución es a través de un acto de voluntad, no

una emoción. Cuando yo decida perdonar, un mila-

gro ocurrirá. La persona que me está causando un

daño es liberada por Dios para cambiar, mis pecados

son perdonados y mi alma es purificada para que

pueda experimentar una profunda unidad con Dios

que me ama completamente.

Padre, a través de la muerte y resurrección de tu

Hijo, Tú me has liberado. Sagrado Corazón de

Jesús, perforado por una lanza por mis pecados, ten

misericordia de mí.

What happened to Passover?

By celebrating the Last Supper with his apostles in the course

of the Passover meal, Jesus gave the Jewish Passover its

definitive meaning. Jesus’ passing over to his father by his

death and Resurrection, the new Passover, is anticipated in

the Supper and celebrated in the Eucharist, which fulfills the

Jewish Passover and anticipates the final Passover of the

Church in the glory of the kingdom.

¿Qué pasó con la Pascua?

Al celebrar la última Cena con sus Apóstoles en el transcurso

del banquete pascual, Jesús dio su sentido definitivo a la

pascua judía. En efecto, el paso de Jesús a su Padre por su

muerte y su resurrección, la Pascua nueva, es anticipada en

la Cena y celebrada en la Eucaristía que da cumplimiento a
