Baptism is a “breakthrough”. In the waters of the baptismal pool or font we break away from the values

and beliefs of an old life and pass through into new ones. The white garments of the newly-baptized are

an outward sign of becoming alive to all that is good. Adult baptisms in particular should make us reflect

on the depth of our own commitment. Are we walking around as if wearing an invisible white garment of

sanctifying grace?

What happens at our baptism prefigures what will happen at our death. The promise of Easter is the

promise that death will not be a “dead-end”, empty of meaning, with nothing coming after. Jesus died to

lay down a pattern for us. Our death, like his, will be a passage from a limited way of living in this world

to the richer, fuller way of living in the world to come. The Christian meaning of death is dying for a

purpose.

This Easter, when we receive the sprinkling of baptismal water, let us remember and take heart from

this: - We belong to Christ. We will break through sin and death to live with Him.

Fr. Vince, Fr. Nathaniel, Fr. Brian

and the staff at the Catholic

Parish of Hastings, wish you all a

blessed, safe and happy Easter.

Congratulations to Thomas van Ryk and Ike Wallace who were confirmed and received First Holy Communion

during the Easter Vigil at Sacred Heart on Saturday. We welcome you into

the life of our parish community. May the Lord continue to bless and keep

you on your faith journey.

Happy Easter! Ngā mihi harikoa o te Aranga!

I started Holy Week at St Joseph’s in Shannon for Palm Sunday Mass where I was

delighted to learn that this small community has a flourishing children’s liturgy

programme. Fantastic. Tuesday saw the celebration of the magnificent Chrism Mass

with a packed Cathedral in full song as we invoked God’s blessing on the sacred oils

that lead us to the sacred duty of pastoral care throughout the year. This morning I was

at St Peter’s College for an optional Reconciliation liturgy at which over 200 students

participated. It’s a great joy for me as Shepherd to be greeted so warmly and

personably by so many of our school pupils. On Good Friday I will join the Hui Aranga

at the Maungārongo marae in Ohakune and then of course for the Easter Vigil, the

mother of all liturgies, I will be back at the Cathedral before heading to another of our

strong small rural communities at Sacred Heart Church in Rongotea on Easter Sunday

morning. Holy Week is like no other. And rightly so! I pray that all of us will be renewed

in our experience of God at work among us, ‘humbling earthly pride’ (Exsultet, Easter

Vigil), and ‘inflaming us with hope!’ (Blessing of the Fire). If you would like to read my

Chrism Mass homily, it’s on the diocesan website https://pndiocese.org.nz/ and some

photos from that beautiful Mass are on www.facebook.com/BishopCharlesDrennan.

Blessings to you and your whānau members especially any who are sick or suffering.

St. Mary’s Primary School -

The children began Holy Week learning about Palm Sunday. And then there was the washing of the feet and the Last Supper. The younger students love ‘doing’ those things to remind them of what

Jesus did for us and what He wants us to do.

Our Year 8’s were again outstanding in giving their all to present the Stations of the Cross. Congratulations to Carter Jones who was Jesus and Charlotte Lyall who was Mary, and all the Year 8

students who participated prayerfully and respectfully.

Happy Easter everyone. Alleluia! Alleluia! He is Risen!!!

St. Joseph’s Primary School - Week 9

Easter Blessings to all staff, students, and families over the Easter break. Our Y6, 7, and 8 students will take part in Cycling G1 at the Hastings Regional Sports Park on 4th, 5th and 6th April. On 12 April 9.15am the school will celebrate the Baptism of several of our students. This will be a special day for the whole school as these students continue their faith journey. Thank you to Mrs Clarke and Miss Anderson for their support of our children and their families. Our Bike-A-Thon money continues to grow. To date we have raised $2773.00. Thank you to all our community for your support of this

fundraiser.

Sacred Heart College- A message from Maria Neville-Foster, Principal ‘I had the wonderful experience of my first ever Fia Fia on the 23rd of March. It was amazing to experience the Pasifika culture in an authentic setting. The native languages, the traditional performances and the interaction among the families was enlightening. I want you to know that culture is something that I hold very dear to my heart and I will be encouraging all our girls at Sacred Heart College to embrace their culture whether it be Pasifika, Maori, Irish, European or New Zealand. It is imperative that our young people know where they come from and who they are on the inside. When they know this, they can stand confidently and succeed socially, emotionally and intellectually. I am looking forward to connecting with more of you in the coming months. If you ever need support or have a question about your daughter’s education, you are very welcome to talk to any of us at Sacred Heart College. Wishing you all a very happy and peaceful Easter. God Bless’
