Introduction

The focus of this survey was to assess the perceptions and opinions of the students of Eastern Illinois

University in regards to the 2012 spring concert.

Topical Areas within the survey include:

Ticket price students are willing to pay

Genres that students want to see

Artists/Bands that student have seen and want to see

This online survey was initiated on January 20, 2012, and was closed on February 3, 2012.

Three Thousand emails were sent out to Eastern Illinois University students.

Of those contacted to participate in the online survey, 252(8.4%) initiated the survey, while 176 (5.9%)

students completed the survey.

Survey Results

What is the Maximum ticket price you are willing to spend on a major concert artist/event at EIU?

Student participants responded with a range from $2-$150.

60% of student responses fell between $20-$30

Mean = $29.47

Median = $25

Favorite Genre

After applying weighted influence to the ranked selection of favorite genre of music, the following

results presented themselves.

I will only pay money to go see a hip-hop/rap artist like Lil Wayne, Drake, Wiz Khalifa, Eminem. 1

If you would have an artist that appealed to me I would be first in line. Though I understand the 'greater good' concept. It might be beneficial to expose these over-privileged youth to something outside their comfort zone. I.E. Not Rap. 1

It all depends on the variety of the music this year. So far I have been disappointed with the lack of effort put forth for a different genre of music besides 'rap/hip-hop' 1

The bands have been consistently rap and I'm not into those concerts. Also the bands picked are absolutely horrible. Stop hitting rap and mainstream radio one hit wonders, pick someone who will actually put on a memorable show. 1

There seems to be no diversity when it comes to music. It's rap every year. I'd like to have an actual rock band perform at EIU. 1

Definitely try for something that will be welcome, not too obscure, BUT equally as important, make sure it is fresh, not corny, not overly poppy, and that it isnt strictly rap, rock, country, or electronic. Have it be something with pop appeal, but origin 1

Having volunteers for ushers and other important aspects is extremely helpful and useful. 1

I have only heard of like two artists above. I guarantee you that ticket sales would be EXTREMELY low with any of these artists. Very disappointing. 1

I LOVED the fact that we got to meet the artist at the end of the show. Definitely an awesome experience. 1

I think that it needs to be someone that people can dance to and can sing along to. Probably a well known artist. It is more fun when you know the lyrics and songs. 1

I think UB has been doing a great job in the past. I attended the Drake concert and loved it. So I would just say try to go bigger and better from the year before. Also look for what's new and hot out. And try to target an artist whom everyone likes. 1

I think UB should have some kind of poll or suggestion period where the students can suggest artist they want to see. 1

It needs to be a big named group, even if it cost a little more money. Nobody wants to see C-list, or even B-list talent. 1

It's annoying to see that I have been here for this will be my fourth concert and not one has been country of alternative...maybe if you actually got some good music people might go to it! Quit it with the rap, hip-hop, and R&B, people who say they want t 1

Make sure the price reflects the band. We are poor college kids. 1
