President’s Message Well, we already had our first snow storm of the season. Most people have put their cars away for the season. But the diehards are still hoping for unseasonal warm days ahead this winter. The fall foliage drive in October was a success. Everyone enjoyed the rolling country roads and streams of northwestern New Jersey. We had twenty-two members, thirty MGs and one Porsche on the drive. The half way stopping point was a visit to the Long Pond Ironworks to view the old stone walls, furnaces and other remnants of an industrious ironworking community. The drive ended in Mahwah at the Mason Jar Restaurant for lunch. We had our reserved section in the restaurant and our cars had reserved parking upon arriving at the restaurant. This year we moved the holiday luncheon per the request of the membership. The board members did their homework and found The Spanish Tavern in Mountainside New Jersey. All that attended said the food was incredible and plentiful. And as usual everyone went home with some nice door prizes that day.

We are happy to announce that The Tony Pfister Brunch and business meeting is scheduled for April 28, 2019 at the 76 House in Tappan NY. The flyer has been sent out and is also included in this newsletter. Also, the first drive of the 2019 driving season has been finalized and will be scheduled for the spring. We hope to have at least three drives this coming season. Finally, the membership dues are due in January 2019. Please don’t wait, get your dues in by going to the website to renew your membership. The board members and I would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and a safe one as well.

The club’s regalia page is up and running on our website //www.enymga.org. You can purchase your club regalia needs online. The club is currently offering the grille badge, embroidered patch, key fob and our coffee mug. We are working to add hats and tee shirts in the next couple of months. We are researching to partner with a clothing company for other products that would be offered to members at no cost to the club.

Remember to check out our Facebook page www.facebook.com/groups/enymga and website for details regarding upcoming events scheduled for 2018 //www.enymga.org. If you have a story to tell about your car don’t forget to email Steve Trovato at [email protected].

We are always looking for member volunteers to help support the club. Bring your ideas to the club, please let us hear about them. If anyone would like to organize and run an activity for the club, let me know and we will help you. I would still like to hear your ideas for an event even if you don’t want to organize it.

Fall Foliage Tour

We had a great fall foliage tour at the end of October. We met at the des-

ignated start point. We looked at the cars and prepared for departure.

We are a friendly group. We even let a Porsche come along!

First stop was the Long Pond Ironworks. The Long Pond Ironworks was

founded in 1766. It produced iron until 1882 using water power from the

Wanaque River. We saw the remains of the furnaces, waterwheels and

other structures. It was a very interesting side trip!

We weren’t really expecting a guided tour,

but that’s exactly what we got! A group

from Germany was driving by. They

stopped when they saw our cars. Our

guide was just finishing up, so we made our

way back to our cars and let him show the

new group around.

Two waterwheels. The one on the left was damaged by fire. The one on the right

has been restored.

Back to the twisty roads and scenic views. This is what we came for!

Finally, we arrived at the Mason Jar for a great lunch.

Holiday Luncheon 2018 After many years of Winterfest Luncheons at the Brownstone in Paterson, the club

decided it was time for a change. We moved the event to November so it wouldn’t

be so close to the Old ‘76 House brunch and we changed the location to the

Spanish Tavern of Mountainside, NJ. A good time was had by all!

Name the Newsletter!

The Eastern New York MGA Club Newsletter has been passed up yet again for the Pulitzer

Prize for excellence in newspaper journalism. As the publication clearly meets all the

standards for the award, there can only be one explanation. It needs a better name. We

are calling on all members to enter suggestions for a new name. Entries will be judged by

the club officers. The author of the name selected will get a yet to be determined

prize. Please send your entries to [email protected].

ENYMGA Club Directory!

One of the things discussed at the Dustoff Brunch meeting was the creation of a club directory.

A car club should be more than official events and a newsletter. It should be a group of people

with common interests who interact, socialize and help each other outside of official events.

To facilitate this, we would like to create a member directory. It will be online, in the

“members only” section. It will only be accessible to members with passwords. The

information is for use by club members only. It is not to be sold, used for commercial purposes

or redistributed. On the next page, you will find the sheet that was distributed at the meeting.

The idea was well received, and many members signed the form to be included in the

directory. We did get a few suggestions. One was to allow more than one phone number for

those who wish to include both home phone and cell phone. We will be doing that. We are

looking into ways to allow members to update their information through the website. Right

now I just want to let everyone know about this, especially those who were unable to attend

the meeting. We will let everyone know when you can sign up on the website.

I would like to encourage everyone to include an entry in the directory. You can share as much

or as little information as you wish. I hope that everyone will at least include their name and

city/state. An entry like “Steven Trovato, Putnam Valley, NY” shows everyone that you are a

member without any details.

GARAGE TOURS! We have been thinking about adding something new to the club’s activities. It works like this. A

member hosts a visit to their garage/shop. The member shows everyone their projects, tools

and toys! Everyone gets to kick tires (gently!) and see how someone else operates. We might

investigate a problem, but it is not really a “fixing stuff” tech session. It is really just an oppor-

tunity to be social and check out fellow members stuff. It doesn’t matter if you have a garage

mahal or a hole in the wall. We are all friends here. There are no judges. It is not a competition.

If you think you might be interested in hosting a garage tour, contact Nick at 973-872-1192.

Here is an example of a problem a member might have with his MGA or other British car. Hey Nick! My 1960 MGA backfires through the exhaust on deceleration - ie coasting down hills. It’s very loud and I’m afraid that the exhaust system will be blown off. Engine Specs - Bored, has hi performance street cam, oversize pistons, big valves, no lead head, lightened flywheel, richer needles in original rebuilt carbs, electronic ignition and leaks oil. What could be causing the backfire?

Thanx in advance for any help. [email protected]
