Eastern School for the Deaf Athletic Association History There are six athletic associations for schools for the Deaf in the United States. They are: Central, Eastern I, Eastern II, Mason-Dixon, New England and Western. The Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association (ESDAA) was one of the first to be organized. In 1927, Fred Moore, a teacher at the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf in New Jersey, organized the boy’s basketball tournament. The ten participating schools in this first special event included: Kendall, Fanwood, Pennsylvania, American, New Jersey, St. Joseph’s, Lexington, Virginia and Maryland. The Katzenbach School emerged as the champion of the tournament.

Actually, the first six such tournaments were not sponsored by any one group. It was left to George Harlow, Athletic Director of the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, to suggest and organize the necessary support structure for what we now know as the ESDAA. The first ES-DAA-sponsored boys’ tournament was held at the Lexington School for the Deaf in New York the trophy presented to the winner of the ESDAA tournament is known as the George Harlow Trophy. The winning team keeps this trophy for one year and passes it on to the winner the fol-lowing year. Hence, it is called a “traveling trophy”.

In 1961, the boys’ ESDAA was split into two divisions. Division I included the school with large numbers of students and Division II, the schools with a smaller number of students. In 1977, the first ESDAA girls’ basketball tournament was held for interested schools, hosted by Paul Barr and the Maryland School for the Deaf. Since that time, the tournament has grown in size, popularity and organization, and, in fact, there are now two divisions. The girls’ tour-nament is now complete with competitions, trophies, All-Star selections and sportsmanship awards. Best of all, this special activity provides opportunities for members of the participating teams to interact with each other. Additionally, it encourages self-discipline, hard work, cooper-ative effort, good conduct and manners- skills that can be kept for a lifetime.

In 1994, the athletic directors used a formula for determining actual eligible enrollments for each member school. As a result, three divisions were formed for boys’ basketball tourna-ment competition. The ESDAA also conducts tournaments and championships in soccer, volleyball, wres-tling, cheerleading and track and field. Schools take turns “hosting” the various tournaments that their students/athletes participate in. championship meet competition. These competitions will center on good sportsmanship, ethical behavior and integrity as advocated by the National Federation of State High School Athletics Association.

Dear Friends, Greetings!

Welcome to Pittsburgh and WPSD. It is our pleasure to host the 86th Annual ESDAA Boys’ Basketball and Cheerleading Tournament weekend.

This weekend’s tournament isn’t only about competition. It is the cumulation of the hard work you put into basketball and cheerleading and giving your best on the court. Vince Lombardi said it all, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand”.

Most importantly, sportsmanship is a critical component of the overall ESDAA tournament. We should all win with style and lose with dignity.

Finally, during your stay here, please make yourself at home. Take the time to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Enjoy your stay. Warmest regards,

Steven E. FarmerCEO

On behalf of the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and Pittsburgh community, I personally want to ex-tend a warm welcome to all participants for an enjoyable and successful 86th Annual ESDAA Boys Basketball and Cheerleading Tournament. I believe this year’s ESDAA Tournament will be a memorable one for each and every student who joins in the competition and fun. Over the next few days, I hope you enjoy the hospitality of the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and the Pittsburgh community. Our ESDAA Committee has been working very hard to ensure that you all have a memorable weekend.

We will welcome these Deaf schools as our guests: American, Lexington, Marie Philip, Maryland, Mill Neck Manor, New York-Fanwood, Ohio, and Pennsylvania for a bracketed-style basketball tournament and cheer-leading competition. I hope you will make many new friends and be re-acquainted with those you’ve met in the past. Making friends and sharing ideas about your school and your life should be an important part of coming together. I strongly believe the ESDAA is a time to develop DEAF pride and to reinforce the fact that Deaf people working together can do anything they set out to accomplish. ESDAA tournaments are also a source of pride for the Deaf community and the students who have accomplished a high level of athletic achievement. Student involvement in athletics and other activities develops a sense of leadership and teamwork that leads to academic success and success in life.

For all basketball participants: Go out there on the court, making fantastic alley-oop passes, dunking, hitting 3-pointers, sinking free throws, and many other things that you are capable of doing and showcase your talents and sportsmanship!

For all cheerleading squads: Go out and cheer your team to victory, fantastic stunts, cheers, and jumps, and many other things that you are capable of doing and showcase your talents and sportsmanship!

Let me again welcome all visitors for a good time of basketball games, social activities, and the positive spirit of competition that this ESDAA will provide.

Good luck and best wishes.

If you choose Sorenson as your default provider, you can port your existing 10-digit number to Sorenson from another provider or Sorenson can provide you with one for the geographic area where you live or work. If you later change your default provider, you can port your number to that provider. When selecting Sorenson, you must provide to Sorenson the physical address (i.e., the Registered Location) from which you are placing the call, so that Sorenson can properly route any 911 calls you may make. If you move or change your location, you must notify Sorenson immediately. You can update your Registered Location from your Sorenson videophone by calling 800-659-4810 or by visiting www.svrs.com/moving. Sorenson will confirm receipt of your Registered Location information. Emergency calls made via internet-based TRS may not function the same as traditional E911 service. For example, you may not be able to dial 911 if there is an internet-service failure or if you lose electrical power, and your 911 call may not be routed correctly if you have not updated your Registered Location. For more information on the process of obtaining 10-digit numbers and the limitations and risks associated with using Sorenson’s VRS to place a 911 call, please visit Sorenson’s website: www.sorenson.com/disclaimer. For more information on toll-free numbering, please visit www.svrs.com/tollfree.
