transpositionThere are many vocal classifications. The choice of key for the guitarist is determined by his or her vocal

range; that is, the distance between the lowest note you can sing and the highest note. You may occasionallyneed to transpose a song to a more suitable key in order to raise or lower the range.

There are two ways to transpose on the guitar:1. with the use of a capo2. by transposing to an entirely new key

capoA capo is a clamp device that when placed on the guitar neck shortens the string length and thus raises the

pitch. Treating the capo as the nut of the guitar, you may continue to use easy open string chords typical of thefolk/country/western style while raising the vocal range of the song.

Chords played in the key of A with the capoat the first fret would sound in the key of Bb.Chords played in the key of G with the capo atthe third fret would also sound in the key of Bb.By placing the capo at the third fret and playingin the key of C, it is possible to sound in the keyof Eb.

The following chart will help you identify the name of the new key, fig. 1
